We booked online without much investigation into the types of accommodation they had. Having stayed at Anatara on Koh Pagnan (which is excellent), we venture onto Koh Tao. While Haadtien has pretenses of being of an international standard (like Anatara is), it is truly NOT. There are a number of things that make this resort inadequate unless you are willing to accept it's a decent 3* standard resort - at best - and only if you chose the right room.

1. The variance between the rooms is unacceptable. The hideaway villas are truly a dump. We saw a $50 a night hotel on the island and I can categorically say that there wasnt much difference between the two. We had booked one of these rooms (the pictures are a lot nicer than the reality) but upgraded to a Getaway villa at our cost after check in - which was a lot better.

2. The service is just not there. For example, we didn't have hot water in our upgraded Getaway villa. We called, it wasn't fixed and we decided to leave the next day!

3. The manager, a very nice gentleman, is not empowered to take any action. As he expressed to us, the owners operate this out of Bangkok and there is no one on the ground who can make major service decisions. This is obviously a disastrous recipe for running a resort. Until there is someone on the ground who can improve this place, I cannot see what how improvements can be made.

4. The beach/ water is OK, but can get muddy when you go out a bit. It could be because of the time of year we visited.

5. We visited during the time that a member of their royal family was visiting - we were NOT told in advance of this. The service issues that we experienced could be related to this. One thing that was a bit odd was that one of the members of the entourage - I imagine some personal assistant - took upon herself to have an argument with me while i was explaining the service issues to the manager. She never introduce herself, who she is, what she does and what capacity she was talking in. Very odd indeed.

6. The location for the resort is great.

Overall, I would say that this a 3* place

Room tip: Do not choose the hideaway villas. Go and stay in a cheap place and save yourself some money

We had one of their better rooms which was extremely expensive for Thailand but was of very high quality. However, we had a look at their cheaper rooms which were still quite good although not so well located. The pool is small but a welcome relief from the heat. The beach is one of the best on Koh Tao which is not saying much. The breakfast is poor to say the least for the amount of money you are paying. My advice if you are on a budget would be to stay in a small resort next to this one that can be accessed by the beach and try to use the pool as there seems to be nobody checking. Take your snorkel and mask as you will be able to swim with loads of sharks just off the beach. They are intimidating at first you will soon see they have no interest in you.

This is a very nice resort with a private beach and relaxed way of life, away from the hustle and bustle of the pier and Sairee beach. Rooms are not quite as big as what they appear to be on the website, and if you are ordering a Castaway Beachfront Villa, be sure to ask for one that's 'on the actual beach' as our first night was spent in one on the grass overlooking the main pool (which was not ideal for a honeymooning couple). However, we raised this with the hotel staff and they were able to move us to a more private room directly on the beach the following day for the rest of our stay which we were very happy about.

Note that if you don't make it onto one of the 3-4 scheduled free shuttles throughout the day to town, a taxi will set you back about AU$10 one way, so we ended up hiring a quad (ATV) to get around and explore (and there is lots of exploring to do!!!).

The staff were friendly, facilities were excellent, free wi-fi which was pretty surprising considering you are on a remote island beach who generate their own power, however the breakfast buffet could have been a bit fresher with more variety each day.

We found the island of Koh Tao to be idyllic, relaxing, snorkelling and diving haven - and can't wait for our next trip back to explore even more. We would definitely stay at Haad Tien again for a nice, laid-back, relaxing beach holiday.

Room tip: If you are wanting a direct beachside castaway villa, in our opinion rooms 210 - 217 are best. They are further away from reception and breakfast but the are literally on the beach, 10 steps from the water and a bit more private.

This is a beautiful location! The picturesque cove is full of fish. I would bring your own snorkle gear as the resort gear had seen too much wear and didn't function as well as it should have. The bar tenders were mostly from Burma (Myanmar) and they were super fun and friendly. The room was beautiful and it had a lovely outside lounge for 2 or 3 people right on the sand! The food was fine. The shuttle picked us up from the harbor as we disembarked from the ferry. What a terrific stay!

Room tip: Our room was 214! It had a lucious lounge on the deck ~ so if during the night you wanted to rest outdoors it was perfect!

Nice bay, nice beech and very good opportunity for snorkeling. Who wants to relax, take it. It is not too cheap, but you can find around cheaper restaurants, if you want. Pleasant place for holiday.
