“Really noisy”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

Me and my partner spent two nights at the Tropicana Resort at the end of August. We didn't have a booking and as it was a bit late in the day we were in a bit of a rush looking for accommodation. There were only two type of room available, basic - cold shower, small fan and non flushing toilet, or deluxe - hot water, a flushing toilet and a ceiling fan. We chose the later, for which we were asked to pay in advance. The room was ok, very basic but clean. What we didn't notice until we had already paid is that the resort is located next to a road and most of the rooms have either the door or the balcony facing on that direction. The road has traffic all day and night long and the noise bounces of the hill on the other side you could as well be sleeping next to a truck garage. We asked to be moved but we were told they didn't have any other room available. If I had to go back I would definitely stay elsewhere.

The rooms are little bit old fashioned but ok. The cheapest rooms do not include warm water shower an toilet flush. The deluxe double room was bigger and included warm water shower and a working toilet. There was also a TV and DVD player in the room. You can borrow DVDs foe free. The location on koh tao is in my opionion great. You can reach all you need within a few steps including a beach. The value you get for the price is good!

Clean but very basic for what you pay for. Staff was nice but a few were rude. Pregnant staff member threw a fit about us using their USB connector. Then the staff of the restaurant accused us of not paying for a beer, when we never ordered one. If the island wasn't super booked we would have stayed somewhere else. Unfortunately we didn't get what we paid for. Lesson learned.

Room Tip: Check reviews before booking. Other places are cheaper and nicer depending on how far you book in ad...

Very well located, right on the beach at Chalok Baan Kaow, a calm place with fun restaurants and bars at nights. Not very party place though. The bungalows are clean and cozy, as well as the restaurant. People at reception does not make justice to thai people... they are not very friendly!

We stayed here for four nights in a budget room costing us 400THB a night. The room wasn't too small and had a double bed and dresser. There is no air con in the room only a fan which could be a bit uncomfortable at times to sleep in, especially when it had been a really hot day. There was a fairly spacious balcony and you could receive wifi from there and in the room albeit a bit slow. The bathroom was quite small and you had to use a bucket and water to flush the toilets. You get one lot of toilet roll once thats gone you have to pay 50THB a roll and the bins never got emptied whilst we were there.

Good location right on the beach and right next to a seven eleven. The food at the resort is fairly cheap and also quite nice.

Room Tip: Try to get a room closer to the beach rather than on the road as can get a big noisy at night with c...

We stayed here for 1 night only in July 2013 as we were getting tattoos just down the road. We didn't have much choice with accommodation as everywhere was fully booked so we had to go for the most expensive room which was 1500baht a night. The room looked ok...but we had a large cockroach in the room!!! We stayed in much cheaper resorts other places on the island and not once came across a cockroach! Not surprised tho as there were gaps in the roof... The A/C wasn't great either. Shower was over the toilet.
In regards to the area, during the day It seemed nice, but gone 9.30pm in the evening we couldn't get food or drink!! Hotel wasn't serving food! Even the pancake guy on the street stopped serving!!! If you want to visit this area I would recommend staying elsewhere (such as sairee) and rent a moped or get a taxi to visit.
Many nicer places for much cheaper!

We stayed here because it was included in the 4 night SSI dive with Ihasia Dives nearby. Although we only ended up doing the 1 day dive, we still stayed here and paid the 400 THB (10€) for the room.

Let me start off by mentioning the only two positives of the resort: they have spacious balconies that overlook the grounds and are nice for a quiet evening to relax. The restaurant is also really recommendable as they have all kinds of dishes, Thai, Asian and Western (and affordable).

Now, the negatives...

The room was the only one that we stayed in throughout all of Thailand that didn't have a toilet flush, meaning you had to fill a bucket up with water then take a smaller bucket and pour it down the toilet to rid the waste. That in itself is not necessarily the problem, but there is no cover for the large bucket, meaning that if you keep the large bucket full of water, you create a haven for mosquitoes to live, breed and then feed. I recommend this hotel to buy some plastic bucket covers to avoid more mosquitoes.

There is no hot water nor a minibar in the room. Also, this is the only hotel that didn't offer free bottles of water on arrival nor gave hot water - they charged me 5 THB for each cup of hot water - to make coffee or noodles, etc. where a kettle seems to be standard practice, here it's not.

The beds are hard and uncomfortable. A lot of light shines in the windows and there are no curtains to manage the light/heat coming into the room.

While we were there a girl was having medical problems, she was red in the face and said she just fainted from the sun. The whole staff was just sitting around talking in Thai and staring at her. I had to go over myself and ask her what was wrong, bring her a cold towel from the bathroom, fan her with my own fan and ask her if she needed to go to the doctor. They finally took her to the nearby clinic, but she had to walk the whole way instead of getting someone to take her or get a wheelchair from the clinic to bring her over. They seemed completely unprepared for emergencies and I thanked the holy stars above that it wasn't me they had to attend to. Poor girl.

Room Tip: Try to get a bungalow as close to the beach as possible.
