My husband and I booked a day trip to the Similan Islands whilst staying in Khao Lak on the first leg of our Thailand holiday. We had planned to book this with our rep but the cost was extortionate. On arriving at Khao Lak we had a wander around the small parade of shops and found quite a few tour operators and booked with one. Costing less than 50% of the reps price. We were picked up on time and arrived at the pier after a short journey. Eat boat is given a different colour wrist band which is a must as I didn't realise so many boats would be setting off at the same time and going to the same 4 stop offs. We did 2 snorkel trips off the boat and struggled to get back to our boat as there were about 15 other boats also moored up. To see any decent marine life you need to get away from the crowds and the many non-swimmers with life jackets who all congregate around the boat and steps to get back on the boat. However, we swam well away from the crowds and saw many lovely fish near the reefs.
During our trip we stopped off at Similan Island and had lunch again with many other boats - so hard to find a table to eat at and then we were left to enjoy 45 minutes on the island swimming - lovely clear blue sea and pure white sandy beach. During our trip we also stopped at one other Island and again could enjoy swimming or relaxing for 45 minutes.

All in all a good day out but do be aware that this is a very popular day trip and you will struggle to find a quiet place to swim/relax on one of the beaches and snorkel stops

This was our first holiday without taking our snorkel equipment - but no problem as you can get snorkel/mask and flippers at the Pier before setting off for the day

We were also told that there wouldn't be more than 30 people on our speedboat but on counting and squeezing into a gap, my husband and I counted 45 without the crew

Be prepared for a full day (around 12 hours) but completely worth the distance travelled. Leaving Patong it took just over an hour to Kho Lak. Our tour group, "Fantastic Similan Travel" were very organised & a great tour group. We then took a 70 minutes speedboat ride to the magical Similan Islands.
A few of the islands in this National Park are protected, so we were taken to 4 unspoilt islands to spots for a great time snorkelling and swimming. We had a long break at Miang Island for lunch and swimming in the crystal clear waters before the stops for snorkelling. We saw plenty of varieties of fish, coral & were lucky enough to see & swim with sea turtles. Best stop was at island No 9 - Similan Island. Amazing views - so picturesque.
These islands are not as overcrowded as Phi Phi Island tour yet, so a worthwhile day trip

We booked a 1 day tour to the Similan Islands from Karon Beach, Phuket from one of the street vendors. We paid just 900 bhat each (About £18) which was a total bargain as our hotel was charging over 2,000 bhat per person!

Out tour was booked with 'Fantastic Similan Travel' and they truly were! The transfer from Phuket to the marina was about 1.5 hours. On arrival we were greeted by a lovely group of staff (who run one of the ladyboy shows by night!) and they provided free tea/ coffee and toast whilst we waited for our boat. Nice touch.

We were then told to collect snorkels and flippers before getting onto our speedboat (if you're a very keen snorkeller, take your own kit - the equipment/ headstraps are loose etc). It's a busy boat, lots of people to fit on and only 4 can sit at the front. Everyone else under shade at the back but to be honest, you need the shade, especially in April as it's so hot.

Eddie was our guide for the day and he was totally brilliant. Very friendly, professional and so hospitable! We were provided with biscuits, fruit, snacks, drinks and sweets between each island hop and had a delicious Thai buffet lunch plus fruit for lunch. We were then offered an ice cream whilst we were free to roam across to the other side of the island to enjoy the scenery.

The islands are truly stunning. White powder-like sand and crystal clear turquoise waters. The Similan islands are a national park and the Thai people take this very seriously, closing the islands to visitors from around 10th April for 6 months of the year to preserve the coral reefs.

Just consider the heat! Especially in April...we took factor 50 suncream and still burnt. Take a hat and a cover up. All day in the sun, snorkelling etc you will turn into a crisp!

This was absolutely up there as one of the best trips we did on our 3 centre holiday in Thailand. Do not miss out, it's a beautiful place!

Similan is a group of 9 islands (plus 2 more on north) part of a protected national park. These are the last far away islands before entering in Burmanian sea. Unfortunately tourism is becoming massive and the rude Russians are the conquerors of this paradise. But we went with Siam Adventure and they re pretty organized. Leaving early in the morning, having a private dedicated beach for lunch. The best Italian guide ever...Mr Claudio!!!! a funny super professional tour guide!!! next time I would take 2 days and 1 night there. It worth going with more time. remember this paradise is open only 6 months a year!!!
