“Ok resort lacks personality”
Reviewed April 11, 2010

The resort is located at the quiet end of the beach which is good. It has lovely pools. We stayed in the new block which was nice until we found cockroaches. There is no feeling of a personal touch to the place. It's almost like they just expect people to come to the hotel. Overall ok hotel, quiet location, nice pools.

Unless you really like hot temperature, do yourself a favor and pay the extra for the air conditionned room or find another place to stay. There is almost no wind coming in and the fans are not that effective. Also, the bathroom of the bungalow (fan) are below average in every aspect and there are some ants and other small bugs. The furniture of the room is hardly better but there were no insects in the bedroom, at least. They do include a decent breakfast though.
That being said, the location for Andaman Resort is great because its away from the noise of Phi Phi village. They have a great pool that overlooks the sea but the beach in front of the hotel is not that great because of the many taxi boats roaming the waters.
They had a really good deal to visit the neighbouring islands.
The hotel`s restaurant close around 16h30 so dont plan on eating there. It should not be a problem to find restaurants nearby though.
Its the most expensive hotel we had to pay in Thailand and it was our biggest disappointment.

We spent 7 nights in this resort and can recommend it on Koh Phi Phi. It situated 10 - 15 minutes walk from Tonsai pier. If buckets of vodka and permanent disco time are not your thing, then the distance to the village center will please you. The beach is right in front of the breakfast area - we have not seen any other resort with this advantage so near Tonsai village.

Our room was in the new wing, clean, spacious and nicely decorated. Perhaps the price does not indicate a "backpacker's" resort, but we wanted some comfort and it stays absolutely correct compared to anything in Europe. Some guests complained about mosquitos in their rooms, but they seemed to have stayed in the older part of the resort - and have probably not always closed their windows at all times.

Some little room for improvement in the room would be to install some more options to hang up your clothes, but that's rather a detail.

Breakfast is quite simple, but you get fruit, thai noodles, rice, bread - enough to start the day. You'll be eating anyway soon - the food is omnipresent on Phi Phi and very cheap.

When you come in to Tonsai by ferry from Phuket, watch out for Andaman staff who will take care of your luggage to the resort.

There are safe deposit boxes, but only in the reception hall - they cost 20 THB each time you open (automatic locking system). In 7 days we had to open 2 times.

Note: Wifi is for free.

Globally and from an eco (and diver's) point of view, hotel staff should be instructed to not let plastic bottles and other rubbish accumulate (too much) in the very nearby area around the beach.

There is a dive center connected to the resort: Harlequin scuba. The have a small boat that took us out to the dive sites in no time - with lunch on a beach: fantastic. When they do not get out with their small boat they get on one of the bigger boats of other dive centers which was not a problem. We can really recommend diving on Koh Phi Phi and also to do it with Harlequin scuba. Note that near Tonsai bay, Harlequin scuba is one of the few dive centers connected directly to a resort with the possibility to start right off the beach after breakfast. No walking needed with your equipment at 35 °C !

My wife and I stayed for 10 days at Andaman Beach Resort and had a lovely time. Firstly, we were greeted at the Pier by the hotel staff who carried our bags by trolley to the hotel. This was nice as we did not have to carry our (large) bags ourselves. We were offered an icy juice at the arrival in hotel.
The room we took was in the nee building and was quite nice, clean, spacey. It had AC, hot water, small refrigerator and nice balcony for two. A bit annoying were the windows facing the inner hotel yard which made us having the curtains closed most of the time - as our room was on the ground floor. Bathroom - the usual one.
What amazed my wife every single day was the artistic sculptures which the staff made of towels (using the flowers as well).
The pool and the surroundings of the hotel was cleaned daily with the staff watching it throughout the day.
The beach is beautiful with soft sand and turquoise water and very near the hotel (10 m). The Hotel is very well located - 10 min walk to the center, and 20 min walk to the Long Beach (the most beautiful beach we ever saw).
We also took open water dive course at the Adventure Club and had great time. The staff was friendly and professional which made us very comfortable during all dives and lessons.
Btw. Do not think Phi Phi is a boring island - the other (northern) side of the island is even more crowded with bars and clubs entertaining people and providing them with adrenaline kicks and fever every night!

Andaman Beach resort is a nice resort in a great location in Phi Phi. We have been going there every year for 5 years, and this year 2010 it is even better than previous years. The swimming pool has been renovated and improved as well as the resort surroundings and cafe area. The 'new building' rooms are very nice. It is a little bit expensive, but that is the same for all accommodation in Phi Phi island if you compare it with some other destinations in Thailand. A few years ago the reception staff were not the best, but now they are much better.
All in all it is a pleasant place to stay.

As for the dive center Harlequin Scuba,, well they are very good, we dive with them every year and have become friends with all the different staff over these last years. We first dived with them in 2006 and every year since and have become regular customers of both the Andaman Beach resort and the Harlequin dive center, and I must say we have never had any bad experiences with this resort or the Harlequin dive team. They are a small dive center who cater for a more personalized approach, rather than a bigger less personal outfit.
The previous review and comments by "hairyfrogfish" are ridiculous, and harlequin just emailed to me to ask me to take a look at "hairyfrogfish" comments on here, as they noticed from their records that we dived at the same time as "hairyfrogfish" in 2008.
"hairyfrogfish" were an Italian couple who did not stop moaning about everything from day 1, but as I remember they actually dived with Harlequin for another 2 or 3 days after that!!!! We remember them because they really annoyed us and the other divers on the boat, even though the harlequin divemasters were trying to be patient with them, they managed with their negative attitude to create a bad atmosphere on the small dive boat. They complained and 'picked' holes in absolutely everything.
Personally we like diving on big boats and small boats, and both have their advantages and disadvantages,,, but please be assured, there is definitely enough room on Harlequin boat to remove your wetsuit!....and half the boat does have a shade from the sun.
I am surprised that harlequin were so patient with this Italian couple, because if it was my dive shop I would not have wanted their business after their 1st days diving!
We are sure most dive centers in Phi Phi are very good, but we started with Harlequin and have only ever had a great time, so we continue to dive with them.
My advice to "hairyfrogfish" is that the point of going on holiday is to have a good time,,, so please leave your bitterness and negativity at home. You managed to make some of mine and my wifes days diving in Phi Phi not as good as usual, so hopefully if we happen to meet again on a dive boat you will have a different attitude! And next time if you do not like a dive center after the 1st days diving, then simply do not dive with them for another few days,, as you also ruin the experience of other paying divers!
Cheers
Alex & Rachel

We stayed here for 3 nights, and after arriving at the incredibly busy pier we were eventually greeted by a porter who had a trolley for our bags. We followed him along the path which seemed to go forever in 30+ degrees Celsius! But in reality it was only 10-15mins walk. At least we didn't have to carry our own bags! I think I would have hired a longtail if that had been the case!
On arrival at the resort we were welcomed with an ice cold glass of juice and taken to our deluxe bungalow. Now... there wasn't really anything deluxe about the bungalow - however it did have hot water (the standard bungalows don't apparently), and aircon (standard bungalows only have a fan), and it didn't have a safety deposit box in the room though they do have them at reception. Having said all that, the room was definately adequate, the breakfast was good (buffet), the beach is nice - not too busy. We didn't use the pool it was always really busy. The resort could do with getting a few more beach beds and umbrellas.
On our last night our bathroom started to smell horrible (no it was't us!), I think it might have actually been coming from outside but it was nearly unbearable! It was like a combination of rotting fish and meat and sewerage...
The restaurant isn't open for dinner, we ate at "Rimlay" our first couple of nights and had consistantly good meals, service and value. It's about a 5 minute walk back towards "town". On our last night we ate at Tonsai Seafood and despite rave reviews I actually think that Rimlay was much better. My sister had a salmon fillet which we asked to be grilled, but are pretty sure it was deep-fried and subsequently totally ruined!
We did a couple of good snorkelling trips while we were there. One was a full day island hopping tour with "U-Rip", very good value (only 350 bht I think - $14nzd!) and included snacks and lunch. The only complaint I have with this tour is that the 'guide' didn't offer us any information, we'd pull up at our destination, he'd tell us where we were, say 'snorkle' or 'swim', we'd jump off and snorkle and eventually all end up back at the boat, there was no set time to stay in the water, we didn't know which fish we were looking at, or what we were getting stung by (turned out to be sea-lice!). Also there were about 12 people on this trip. Other than that a great day out!
The following day we went on another snorkelling tour, this time a 1/2 day one with Adventure Club. The group is meant to be an eco-company, and perhaps they are eco friendly in some manners, they replant coral etc. However, whilst on our 1/2 day tour our boat driver drove right past a large black rubbish bag floating in the sea, he saw it but completely turned a blind eye! The tour guide was far more knowledgable, he was able to point out and name all the different kinds of fish, and although we went to alot of the same spots that we'd already been to we saw so much more - reef sharks, moray eels, turtles, and we did an amazing swim through. So although it was the same price as the full day tour we'd already done, it felt like better value as far as feeling safe, learning about the fish, and there were only 6 people on the trip etc.
Overall, Phi Phi was lovely. Yes there was rubbish here and there, yes there are people everywhere and some young women don't respect the largely muslim population by sunbathing topless, but we loved it. To be honest I don't know if I'd stay at the Andaman Beach resort again. It was just a bit of a let down room-wise, but the location is great, wouldn't want to be any further round the island. Would perhaps check out the neighbours - Andaman Legacy.

We stayed here for 4 nights in Feb 2010. we had a bungalow at the end of complex. The staff were extremley friendly and the bfast was good. They are located at the end of the beach , which is great if you want some piece and quiet. The beach is great and is close to long beach if you want to venture off. The rooms are decent and little more expensive than other parts of Thailand but you are on Ko phi phi .
