“Good Price for an Average Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2012

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in July. The rooms could have been a bit more up-to-date but overall they were pretty clean and the air conditioning worked well. We would stay here again if we go back to Phi Phi.

We spent one night at the hotel with friends and and had a great time, mostly because the island is just amazingly beautiful. The hotel had a good location, short walk from the market and the beach. All in all the hotel was pretty average, rooms a bit old but no major complaints.

After reading so many negative reviews I was very apprehensive about my stay (July 2012). However, this was totally unfounded - I had a great time. The staff were very helpful and polite, and the room was clean and comfortable. The banyan rooms are a little bit dark due to the wood interior but there are plenty of lights in the room. The location is ideal as it's 10 seconds to the beach across a lovely seafood restaurant, and far enough way from the hustle of ton sai village. The fitness complex lived up to expectations and had tons of new cardio and weight training equipment. I only have one complaint, which is the lack of in-room free wifi. It's 100BHT/hour for in-room wifi, otherwise you have to use the fitness complex and they turn off the routers during closed hours, so internet isn't available overnight. Not a huge deal, but is inconvenient if you need to use the internet.

It's close to the action without being in the action. Staff at reception are ultra impersonal. Rooms are fine, clean and beds not too hard. All in all it's a good pick, just don't expect a big hug at the door.

This was our honeymoon and we decided to pay extra money to stay somewhere safe and nice. We had read a few disturbing reports on the internet about the behaviour of the hotel staff and theft incidents identical to what we suffered, but we still opted for Banyan Villa as it seemed a high-class establishment.

We were wrong.

We had placed about 30,000 baht in the room safe which was meant to be used for a diving course. On the 3rd day as we opened the safe, we discovered that 15,000 baht had gone. Our passports and half the money remained, but 15,000 had definitely gone. I immediately thought of the many internet reviews which had detailed similar occurrences. The hotel management have master keys which can open any of the room safes, a fact I already knew from other reviews before I approached reception. When we approached the staff their response was to giggle and smirk. I highlighted that I had heard many similar stories, but they just repeated that it was impossible for anybody to access our safe.

Sadly, Phi Phi is corrupt. The staff refused to do anything except laugh so we went to the police who were utterly useless/corrupt. They accompanied us to the hotel where they greeted the management like old friends. The manager admitted that they had master keys to the safes, but denied all knowledge of any theft. With the police they offered to show us the CCTV footage, which was as laughable as it was a timewaste: the CCTV simply shows the reception area and nothing else. The police just went home.

The next day we actually saw the hotel management and the police dining together in Phi Phi's most expensive restaurant where they raised us a glass for picking up the tab. Insult to injury, when we checked out the desk staff actually had the cheek to say "Don't come back."

If you leave money in the safe here expect it to be stolen (they tend to not take all so you may not notice). This disgusting hotel is in league with the police so don't expect any help there either.

Room Tip: Go to another hotel, but if you must stay here then all of the rooms seemed pretty similar with no m...

Turned up at Phi Phi with no accommodation booked and decided to pay a bit more and stay somewhere nice. Less than a three minute walk from the pier sits Banyan Villas. Very nice resort style hotel. Nice rooms and lovely pool. Located on the quiet side of the island it is a five minute stroll to the beach bars and noise on the other side of Phi Phi- perfect for what we wanted. Very chilled, laid back feel, and breakfast in a beach side sala always a plus! Only one minor issue was getting to use the gym, the voucher system whereby guests have to get a coupon from reception was a bit of a pain, especially as if two guests were in one room they bith need seperate coupons. Having said that the gym is new so perhaps they will sort this out fairly quickly- service otherwise was excellent. Really enjoyed our stay

THE BAD

We arrived in PP on the afternoon ferry and there was nobody from Banyan Villa to meet us at the pier. It was fine as we know where the hotel is situated and we didn't have that much luggage. The hotel facade really is a good sight as opposed to its neighbors. But be not deceived as its the only thing that's good in the hotel. Well, apart from their gym.

The Room. I find the hotel room small, the bed hard, towels threadbare, and the toilet stinky. The A/C is weak.

The Pool. Is tiny. It looks full with only five people in it. Sun lounges limited. The shower area is smelly. The pool is dirty with dead leaves and bugs in it. In our six days stay here, I never once saw it cleaned. But why would you be staying in the pool if there's a good beach just a short walk away?

The Facilities. No Free Wifi in the rooms. You have to go up to their gym to use the free internet connection. Breakfast Buffet is the same every day, no variety and a bit stale.

THE UGLY

The Security. Left a few thousand baht INSIDE OUR LOCKED SAFE IN OUR ROOM and the next day (our second day in Phi Phi) half of it was nicked! It was supposed to be our diving money (Cert Course) but the staff helped themselves to it. Reported it to the reception, and they immediately denied taking it (who would admit it, anyway?) despite the fact that the receptionist has the Master Key to all the room safe! Not once did he offer to help but vehemently denied (we didn't even accused him!) that he took the money. When we told them we're gonna report it to the police, they just nonchalantly said OK. DID NOT OFFER TO HELP EVEN ONCE.

We reported the incident to the (lame and pathetic) police force and we didn't even feel any sense of urgency from them. They lousily asked for details and let us write a report (I doubt they can understand or read half of what we have written). Two policemen went with us back to the hotel to 'investigate' and spoke to the Manager in Thai. They all looked like they were are friendly friends. Then there's the usual 'check the CCTV' which was useless since there's only a four of them all in the reception area and there are several entrances leading to the hotel rooms! So watching a couple of hours worth of CCTV recording was definitely a waste of time. Then they offered to get 'fingerprints' on the safe which they did and will 'cross check it' with the fingerprints of the hotel staff which I don't think they never really did since we never heard back from them.

Oh, yeah, we definitely saw them having a feast, the policemen and one of the hotel staff, a couple of nights after the incident, in one of the nicest restaurants in the island (Le Grand Bleu) and so there goes our diving money.

One more, and when you go back to your hotel late, they would interrogate you as if you're a thief walking into their hotel in the middle of the night!

Last Thing: When we checked out and had a few words to the receptionist (the one with the master key), Thanking him of his help and the wonderful service they have given, and how we're NEVER EVER staying there again (if we ever go back to PP), he warmly answered back: WE DON'T WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN TOO. The freaking nerve!

My husband chose PP Banyan Villa because this is (was) the 'best looking' accommodation that he saw when he visited PP in 2007. In all fairness, the photos here and in the website looks pretty good and the reviews were mostly good. We booked our 6-night honeymoon stay in this hotel through Agoda so we can't leave the hotel after the incident since we're fully paid. Spare yourself from this pain and DON'T STAY HERE.

Room Tip: Garden Wing - First Floor. It's a bit difficult to go up and down the stairs and if you're a...
