“Good base for watersports and tonsai”
Reviewed April 4, 2009

Lived it up in the Maya suite whilst doing some diving, snorkeling and birding around the islands.

Location was ideal for exploring tonsai, longtails, and of course any or all of the main diveshops. Good view of the islands from the room, which was a fair size. Its really close to the pier, and close enough to the bars etc... without being too close!

Initial reception was perhaps a little cool, but efficient, and rooms were kept spotlessly clean.

Breakfast was perfectly acceptable.

we checked in March 2009;
why, same as everyone else, and why its so 'popular' its directly at the end of the arrival pier! leave your ferry with hundreads of fellow passengers, panic, and check in.
!first mistake! they will con you into thinking you can only have a lesser room, at a HIGHER rate (!) as 'you havent pre booked online'.
DO NOT GET CONNED, by this trick as everyone does; they will offer you higher rooms at even higher rates.
We got put in a subterainian room, with no windows, damp dark and smelly.
Accomodation throughout the hotel is actualy very poor.
The swimming pool claims to be 'natural water' ; its more like swimming in pure bleach, children (and adults) were all crying the minute you swim; also its tiny, more like a large jaquizze style, certainly not a swiiming pool.
The food was poor. The staff generally unhelpful and rude.
Cleaners are stationed on every floor from 6am onwards to 'catch out' any addtional visitors, (for which they call the police!) they chatter insessitanly on their noisy radios to beat the boredom, and awake all guests in the noisy concrete halls.
Relentless Notices about fines, and being taken to the police everywhere (!) toilets, reception, bedroom, pool, the list's go on......

In summary, go one street back, HALF your price, and get twice the standard.
DO NOT panic, and check into this first hotel that you see; Phi Phi is packed with bars, diving schools and accomodation, there is a huge surplus to go around, avoid this place like the plague, its over priced, dirty and down right rude.

i stayed here for one night in Dec 08.

On first impressions, the hotel was nice. My room was spacious and the bathroom was nice and clean. breakfast was fine if unexciting.

It wasn't until after i checked out the next day, that i realised I had bed bug bites covering my arms stomach and even on my face. They were huge ugly red bites and different to mosquito bites so i knew they were bed bugs. I looked like a complete freak on the beach in my bikini and when i went for a thai massage the thai lady doing the massage could not believe the state of my arms and face. i've had bed bug bites before, i know these bugs are not killed unless you wash bed linen in hot water....i think i paid enough money for them to not cut corners on the laundry.

i managed to get some cream from the chemist which took away the redness after a few days. but by this time, it was too late to go back and complain to the hotel.

but i would never go back here. i ended up staying somewhere else which was a total dive ie) a mattress on the floor in a room, but at least they were no bugs eating me alive!

I learned one thing about this island, there are no great hotels in the main part of the island. I heard good things about the Holiday Inn, but its in the middle of nowhere. We stayed here for 4 nights and had a very good stay. The rooms were clean, although the bathroom wasn't Zagat rated, and the hotel was in a great location. You are close to the beach, shopping, restaurants etc. The price was amazing as well for what we got. Sure there are no elevators but they aren't asking you to take 115 flights of stairs to get to your room. Also, get a room with a balcony and an ocean view, you will be very happy. The pool was also an added bonus when you get back from the beach.

Location makes it easy to like this place as Phi Phi is a highlight of any trip to this area. Service was efficient and business like if not overly friendly. Rooms vary quite a bit (we stayed in two different, short spells) but the pricing does reflect this relatively fairly. Value for money in Phi Phi is less than elsewhere in the area, and this hotel is no exception. We enjoyed our stay and made the most of the pool and appreciated the easy access to both beaches, restaurants and the ferry terminal. Not an island hideaway by any means though, particularly given the huge influx of daytrippers to the restaurant at lunchtime.

This hotel seems to be the tallest on Phi Phi and is right in front of you as you arrive at the pier, so you won't miss it and it's about 2 minutes walk. It's beside all the restaurants and shops.

The hotel has lots and lots and lots of rules - there is no way you can check in a bit early, you have to sign in and out your towels, you have to sign the back of your room key and are not allowed leave the hotel with it, and there are constant warning signs all over the place telling you you will be fined for various inappropriate behaviour (e.g. if you steal stuff from your room you will be fined, eh, duh?), if you even check out so much as a minute late you are fined etc.

Rooms: The room is perfectly decent, a three star quality room with safe, TV, fridge, balcony etc. Bathroom is fine. It's not too noisy, at least for the night we were there.

Breakfast: The breakfast is pretty basic, don't forget your breakfast coupon!! Even if you show your room key you're not getting in without the breakfast coupon in the Hotel Of A Million Rules.

Cleanliness: It's fine cleanliness-wise, but there was food sitting outside a room for at least 12 hours though (there in the evening and still there in the morning).

Pool: The pool is very small but I think it would be a bit unreasonable to complain about that as it's very clear that space on Phi Phi is at an absolute premium (most of it is inaccessible and hilly).

Overall it's perfectly fine, but the constant instructions/warnings that seem to assume you're about to trash the hotel or steal from the hotel or try to get a free slice of breakfast pineapple from the hotel just bring it down a bit. Oh and if you use the hose in the toilets to wash your feet you are fined €10 (?!) There was also a sign saying that the pest control people were coming in and we were NOT TO PANIC (in capitals and underlined). Would I recommend it? Can't say either way really, there might be better out there, the best part of it is its location. It's "meh" really, if they were a bit less bossy I might be a bit more favourable to it.

Phi Phi is fantastic though - definitely worth a visit.

Kelly - South Africa Phi Phi Hotel
21 December - 26th December 2009

We have just returned from a 3 week holiday in Thailand. One of the hotels that we stayed in was the Phi Phi hotel. This hotel is located right next to the pier so when arriving in is great you can just walk to the hotel. The reception staff were helpful and friendly when we arrived. the hotel is in a great spot as it is 2 mins walk away from the beach where you can take the longtail boats, do kayaking and just spend the day on the beach. It is very close to the market and shopping there is pretty good execept we found the locals unfriendly and could not be bothered. As if they were so tired of barganing that when you walk into their shop they ignore you. Most of the dont bargain and things can be quite expensive.

The island is PACKED with day visitors coming in during the day which is also not great as you cant move if you are trying to shop.

On the NEGATIVE side:
Our room faced the bars on the beach and we had fire dancing until3 or 4am. The music was so loud that the windows were shuddering. Impossible to sleep.
We had men staying between ourselves and our 2 daughters who entertained ladyboys late at night and there seemed to be no control from reception even though there is a sign that says no visitors after 10pm. Walls are thin and we could here the goings on....Not great for children aged 12 and 14 to hear.
Our room was never cleaned proberley, just the basics. Coffee and tea never replaced.
the duvet on my husbands bed was torn and also never replaced.
Our toilet was blocked for the 3 days out of 5. We asked housekeeping to sort if out which eventually was done with a lot of fuss. Had to ask for toilet paper to be replaced. The lady at reception was REALLY rude and said that we must look at the sign that says dont throw paper in the toilet. Our family had 4 rooms and not one of them said dont throw paper in the toilet.

We were very dissappointed with Phi Phi and thought we were going to a nice quite island. Quite the opposite. It is noisy, full of youngsters who are there to get either doped up or just to have a major party. Sad to find out only when we get home that it has the reputation of being the place to go where you can get "anything and anything goes"

We took a walk up to the view point and walked home through surage and piles of waste matter. Absolutly shocking.

In the defence of the island and the people we were visiting it at its busiest time and maybe they are just not equiped to handle all those people coming through, including all the day visitors that come and eat at the hotel.
