Holiday Inn Resort Phi Phi Island

Reviewed February 20, 2014

My wife and I splurged in Thailand for the last three days of our trip and booked a room at the Holiday Inn on Koh Phi Phi. We wanted to get away and have some quiet beach time before heading back to our normal lives. I have mostly great things to say about this place but also a couple things to be aware of.

Great things:

Clean rooms
Great service from hotel staff
Quiet beach
Wonderful sunset bar area
Free snorkel equipment
Short trips to Bamboo and Mosquito island

Things to be aware of:

Although this was the most expensive hotel we booked during our two week stay in Thailand it was the only one that didn't include breakfast in the rate.

The activities center is great for snorkeling or day trips on the boat but cheaper fares can be found by booking with the long tail boat operators directly about 50 feet down the beach.

Our room was located toward the back of the resort overlooking a gurgling sludge pond. If the room location is important (beach front, garden view, etc) to you then it might be worth having a look at the room prior to signing anything during check in. We weren't in our room that often so this wasn't a big deal for us but might be for someone else.

Bring bug spray. The bugs weren't awful but we were glad to have some bug defense during dinner.

I would highly recommend this place for honeymooners, romantic couples, or families.

Room Tip: Try and avoid the pond in back.

This was our 4th visit. We have every intention of returning. We are always made to feel so welcome and the very friendly staff go out of their way to help you. Onward travel arrangements were made for us and everything worked really well. Need to be able to physically manage getting on and off a long-tail boat! Found menu a little limited if staying for many days. Would have liked more Thai food options.

For anyone having doubts based on the few weak reviews, ignore them. We spent 10 days in Thailand. Two of those nights were reserved for Phi Phi island at this resort. Within 10 minutes of arriving we extended our stay another night and should have stayed the whole trip.

Where else can you have a sunrise on a beach outside your room and about 500 meters away watch a sunset that evening? For those who want crowded beaches with vendors bugging you every 5 minutes don't come here. Go to Patong. But if you want a picture perfect beach without crowds, afternoon massages in a hut on the beach, good meals under the trees (on the beach), gorgeous sunrises and sunsets and picturesque excursions there is no place on earth to get all of that for the price.

Thank you Holiday Inn for the friendly staff and perfect escape with my bride of 20 years. I only wish I could have stayed longer. One thing is for sure, I will be back. The Sunset Bar is the absolute best, but don't tell anyone. Let's keep it our secret.

One of my friends recommended staying here as she went on her honeymoon. I went solo and was very thankful! My room was a beach bungalow with a outdoors shower and the most beautiful sunrises. The property, service, spa were all fabulous. You are isolated as there are no roads to drive...however you always have a longboat fisherman who is waiting to take you wherever you want to go by water. This side of the island is quaint and quiet just exactly what was looking for.

We spent 3 nights in November in a beachfront bungalow.

Resort located on Laem Tong beach, on the northern part of Phi Phi island, which you can reach from Tonsai by longtail boat only (the resort can organise your transfer for a fee). Some boats from Phuket first stop at Tonsai then stop in front of Laem Tong - in this case, the resort will pick you (free) from the main boat to the shore with smaller longtail boats.

The place is somehow isolated from the main crowd and this is what you want if you expect some days of relax only. No ATM in the area. Tonsai is 30mn and 1000B one-way (longtail boat) away.

The beachfront bungalows are on the first row toward the beach, but do not expect a panoramic view onto the sea as there is a line of trees. The bungalow itself looks somewhat tired, maintenance gives the feeling to be at its minimum level to get things working but not more. Noisy AC unit. But comfortable and clean. Good free wifi (even on the beach in some places). Need for renovation is probably what this resort lacks most.

Nice beach, but getting a deckchair or a seabed can be hard. Obviously not enough of them, and a real pain that you have to find and bring them along on your own... is this Holiday Inn level of service ?? (do not even expect any staff to come along for drinks or anything).

Buffet breakfast was good. The only dinner we experienced was the special one for Loy Kratong, which was pricey but worth the money - both for food quality, shows and activities for this special night. On other normal days, you have to expect the prices of an international chain in an isolated place.
As an alternative, you may try the small restaurant just next door (Jasmine) or the other more secluded one at the south end of the resort (walk south on the pathway along the upper side of the south pool, just when leaving the resort (there is a small booth, usually unmanned) you will see that tiny family restaurant up a fly of stairs).

All in all good but not exceptional, enjoy the place, seat back and relax.

Holiday Inn Resort, Phi Phi Island, Thailand
November 27 to November 30th, 2013

arrived by boat ( was very crowded ) from Phuket. First stop was Lo Dalum Bay where many tourist got off, from here we traveled to the north end of Phi Phi Island- which is much more peaceful- to the Holiday Inn on Laem Tong Beach. The boat stopped "off shore " and we were transferred to a Long Tail Boat. For young people this is no problem for the Vintage generation folks it is a big challenge. Getting off the Long Tail Boat is a problem for us older folks as well…. it's no fun, let me be very blunt about it. You may even have to walk through some water to reach the beach & the Holiday Inn Resort. Once you have accomplished that you are in good shape. Upon arrival we were handed a washcloth to refresh ourselves which is a nice touch. During registration you are offered a " Welcome Drink" ( well deserved ) . Front Office Manger Nithas Suriyatan / Duty Manager Tao and his staff will look after you during your registration. Job well done…. A Golf Cart will than transfer you to your room. We were assigned in a very comfortable Beach Villa No. 510 which is located at the end of the beach. It is a very large room with a Terrace looking out to the turquoise sea. The room is very clean and appointed with all the amenities. ( see pictures ) In the room you have a Shower, high-speed Internet, flat TV screen, DVD player, coffee maker, a fridge, Iron & Iron board, bath robs, slippers, and an in-room safe. The staff I came in contact with are all very friendly and accommodating. If you need the Golf cart to pick you up from your room to come to the Lobby / Bar etc. you will be picked up in case you do not want to walk the distance. On property they have the " Sunset Bar " it is a steep climb up the hill but it is certainly worthwhile- don't miss it- here you can enjoy your * sundowner* and watch an incredible sunset. ( stay amazed at the Sunset Bar ) We had Dinner at the Cha Bah Seafood Restaurant, an outdoor restaurant by the ocean. We selected the grilled Salmon with a Baked Potato at 465.00 Bath per person and it was very good . It was delicious, no doubt about it. Duty Manager " Tao" was making his rounds to make sure the guests are well taken care of. There are beautifully maintained tropical gardens everywhere, the beach is being cleaned often.
Breakfast is served in two locations,,, we choose to have it at Chom Tha Lay restaurant. You have to climb up some stairs , come early to get a front row seat to look out to the Andaman Sea with it's turquoise water , in the distance you see Bamboo Island. The food selection is wonderful with items from the Western / Asian cuisine. Breakfast- Waiter " JOE " is on the ball and will look after you and bring you freshly brewed " Cappuccino " . The Laem Tong Beach is pretty long and you can take nice long walks here along the Andaman Sea… We enjoyed our stay at this Resort and can recommend it and salute General Manger Carol Waller and her very professional staff.

Myself and my friends had a wonderful stay at the Holiday Inn Phi Phi, and wished we could've stayed longer than 3 nights. This extensive resort is situated on a beautiful and secluded stretch of Laem Tong beach on Koh Phi Phi Don island. We stayed in a cute garden bungalow that was clean, comfortable and equipped with everything we needed. It even had a nice verandah with deck chairs and a clothes line.

The infinity pool at the Coral Wing of the resort is gorgeous and overlooks the beach, longtail boats and the crystal clear waters of the Andaman sea. The restaurant at the hotel is quite pricey but Jasmin restaurant right next door serves some delicious and affordable Thai food. We did go for the Thai buffet one night which was 600baht per person - lots of delicious Thai dishes and desserts, as well as a cultural dance performance. A fire show took place on the beach that night as well which was very entertaining and included crowd participation. Make sure to take a walk up to the Sunset Bar on the hilltop - beautiful views of the ocean at sunset but the bar closes by 7/7.30 so make sure to go early if you want drinks.

I would recommend taking a day trip to Koh Phi Phi Le islands - myself and my friends took a trip by longtail boat to some of the islands around Phi Phi Le including Maya Bay. Our driver stopped us at an amazing snorkelling spot where we spent a good hour admiring the colourful fishes and coral below! SeaBees scuba diving is attached to the Holiday Inn, and was a major highlight of my entire trip; one of my most incredible experiences so I very highly recommend opting for their diving course.

The only disappointment we experienced at the Holiday Inn was the reception's failure to give us a wake up call on the morning of our departure which resulted in us almost missing our ferry back to Phuket. We also missed out on our last buffet breakfast as a result which was upsetting given it is so delicious!
