“Simple and cheap”
Reviewed January 2, 2014 via mobile

Simple rooms. Literally just bed and bathroom. You pay for what you get. Quiet which is greay as just up the little hill from all the noise and pubs. Worth paying slightly more for aircon and hot water rooms. Use of stunning swimming pool a 5mim walk away but you do hav to walk past some smelly areas.

There are actually two Golden Hill bungalows in phi phi don and we ended up staying in the less nicer one, but paying the same price as our friends who stayed in the nicer one with a pool further out.
The rooms were very basic for the price we paid; they were old and our sink leaked every time we turned it on. Would not recommend it!

I pre-booked Golden hill bungalows before we left Bangkok for Phi Phi and what a mistake that was. First of all the location is terrible, it is a steep climb up to the bungalows and is right next to a Water reservoir which is a breeding ground for Mosquitos.
The first bungalow they gave us was up stairs that could only be described as dangerous, the bungalow stank of damp, we later found mould inside the pillows, which was the final straw so we asked to move.

They did move us promptly so I will give them credit for that, in fact I think he knew we would ask to move the moment he saw us - it's obvious they try and fob you off first with the disgusting bungalows.

The second bungalow was slightly better as it was not up such steep steps, however, it was not clean and still had a smell of damp to it and to top it off there were also cockroaches in the bathroom. After a night of not sleeping we left in the morning and got our money back from the Thai owner who I had previously seen walking around with a gun.

We found a much much nicer room 2 minutes from the beach for cheaper than Dave's bungalows.

Do not stay here and do not pre-book! I didn't believe the reviews and what a mistake that was.

Okay so just like to clear a few misunderstandings up with this review. Don't let the low ratings given by some other guest fool you. This is a great place to stay and if you check out most of the bad reviews they are actually reviewing golden hill hostel which is on the way up to golden hill bungalows with completely different owners and looks pretty horrible. GH bungalows is a lovely place friendly staff and clean pool area with its own bar for when you can't be bothered walking into town for an afternoon beer.
I did originally check out a superior bungalow. Spacious, clean with aircon and tv and the price was a steal for phi phi in high season at 1,300 baht. Although as other reviewers have said it did smell rather musty, which I'm sure could be fixed by opening the windows for a while but as I suffer with very bad asthma I didn't want to risk it.
Luckily they had building rooms at and extra 200 baht a night - so now we are looking at around £30 still a steal for high season phi phi.
The building was brand new I think we may have even been the first to stay in our room.
Immaculately clean with a beautiful balcony and two chairs. VERY powerful aircon.

Only cons -
No tv In the building rooms but they have them in the cheaper superior bungalows.
Shower was never hot the 3 days we stayed, but never so cold we couldn't use it.
If you have laundry done with them make a list of everything you wash. We ended up with some guys clothes in our wash bag and didn't realise till he was banging on our door at 8 in the morning because he was leaving and they couldn't find his clothes. We hadn't checked ours the night before after picking it up and it turned out we did have a lot of his stuff poor guy.

Anyway if you're looking for somewhere cheap and there are new building rooms available definitely worth a look.
Best of a bad bunch on phi phi island

I stayed here for 4 nights early November with a group of 15 university students. Our experiences ranged from satisfied to thoroughly disgusted although we all booked double or twin rooms and paid the same price.

Luckily I got one of 2 newly refurbished rooms directly above reception. I had good wifi, a clean spacious room, balcony overlooking the small man-made waterhole. Our toilets were clean and showers were hot. There is a pool to enjoy until 9pm and a bar on the premises.

However, the majority of my friends had bad experiences with a coupe of people vacating to find a better place half-way through their stay. Complaints included leaking air conditioners, blocked toilets, dirty rooms and linen and noisy due to people talking unnecessarily loudly into the night. Some of the rooms are located up several flights of stairs surrounded by insect ridden jungle and wifi is laggy.

It is located far from the ferry port and the main beach so there is a long hike to get there so hire a porter if you have heavy luggage. There is no breakfast provided. If I went to phi phi again I would look for somewhere closer even if I have to fork out a bit more money because the quality of your room at Golden Hill Bungalows is really the luck of the draw.

Why you might ask?

Let's start with the rubbish everywhere! Hidden under the bungalows and on the pathways, the owners of the Golden Hill have no respect for the environment.

The room-
-Given one sheet ripped in four places with dried blood spot stains.
-Broken air conditioner, leaked everywhere and constant drip which led to the decision of a hot night or a sound that eventually drove us crazy. The leak was so bad that our bags got wet
-The floor was unclean and unswept, our feet were black within seconds.
-The outdoor seats were dirty
-The window was broken and would not shut properly. This left two wide gaps.
-The staff throws a private party every night by the pool blasting the music till 3-4am in the morning despite the "7 Golden Rules" in our room stating that we must keep noise down after 11pm-(absolute hypocrites)
-The bathroom had a very large hole in that was covered only by paper. This paper had a hole in it.
- The towels received for the room were dirty, old and what I consider a rag. However they came in use with the air conditioner flooding.
-The bed was infested with fleas and we are covered head to toe in bites.

This truly was the worst place I have ever stayed. Avoid at all costs

Avoid this place first and foremost because there are so many cheaper and better located hotels and dorms on phi phi. Don't get sucked in like we did into choosing a place to stay as soon as you get off the boat in the port. Instead look around yourself and make your own decision where to stay.

The biggest problem with these bungalows was the damp and mold riddled roof the place absolutely stank when we first entered. The English staff were cowardly enough to pretty much admit there knowledge of this when confronted. 900baht a night is still cheap, but not for Thailand and not even for Phi Phi, there are far better options around the island. This is by far the worst place I have stayed outside of Europe.

Pros: clean floor
Generally clean linen
Flushing toilet

Cons: damp and mild literally makes you ill
Awful location
Overpriced
Pool is always covered?
