“Great, secluded hotel”
Reviewed January 2, 2012

Probably one of the nicest on phi phi island.
PROS:
-clean, modern rooms
-away from crazy noise and hustle of phi phi town and pier
-nice beach out front
-satellite television
-good wifi signal

CONS:
-no pool
-charge 100 thb for wifi
-no real restaurant
-15min walk from anything
-be prepared to walk with all your bags from the pier when you arrive as they won't pick you up (they told us they would and never showed up). This was terrible!

Nice stay, nice resort. Nothing incredible but 'good'

Room Tip: 3floor at the front would have the best views.

As my wife and I are traveling for four months we have a lot of luggage, so we called ahead and asked them to meet us at the pier to help with the luggage. No one was there so I had to lug all of our bags to the resort in the mid-day sun, not the end of the world but not a great start!

The room was fine, except for the open bathroom which just let the massive bees in and looked at the other guest's - WHY?

The staff were friendly, but that is the norm for Thailand.

I would suggest that you can get far better value with far better beaches elsewhere in Thailand!

We arrived at this hotel for a 6 night stay having booked a grand sea view room. On arrival inital appearances seemed fine, nice reception, beach front location etc. However the reality soon dawned. We went to our room to find wires hanging from the wall where the tv should have been. On asking about this at reception we were told that the tv was broken. We asked when would it be fixed to be informed that the engineer wasnt sure how long it would take and we may not be able to have a tv. Further issues then arose when entering the bathroom. We were aware beforehand of the open bathroom which wasnt a problem to us. However, the torn and badly stained mats on the bathroom floor were another matter. The more we looked the dirtier this place became. There was smoke everywhere from a bonfire of burning rubbish in the garden right outside our block. I informed the receptionist that we may well not be staying and received no response. I then promptly scoured the island for available hotels and came up with Paradise Pearl Bungalows. At 1200 baht less per night, and ten times the cleanliness, location and friendliness, this was a steal. We returned to the Mama Beach where the owner/manager appeared. When we said we were leaving, he threw the booking sheet on the floor, and made no attempt to apologise or sort the problems out. His attitude makes me wonder how this place manages to survive and was confirmation for me that our decision to leave was the right one. The hotel is in a quiet area of Tonsai, however the bay is full of hundreds of boats so quiet or not, the view is like that of a busy port, and due to its location, the hotel spends all afternoon in the shade. There are far nicer and far cheaper places to stay on the island, with much more approachable, helpful and polite staff!

This small hotel, run by a very nice French couple, serve up the best set breakfast I've ever had at the hotel. Its located at the far end of the south beach, which makes for a bit of a walk -- but away from the noise.

We were lucky enough to be booked into two separate hotels during our stay on Phi Phi Don, Mama Beach was our first. Upon arriving on Phi Phi islands the first thing you'll notice apart from the surreal setting is a tonne of boats in one section of the sea to the side of the island... yes Mama Beach is behind this and you're attention will be drawn to the beach adjacent to Mama Beach which is Long Beach (PARADISE!).

We checked in too early so had to wait around for a while, the kind Thai lady made sure we had drinks, cold towel etc. and gave us some free massage tickets to make up for the wait. Upon arriving in our room it was nice but nothing too great, the units were all flimsy plastic and needed replacing, it detracted from the feel of a 'luxurious hotel'.

The shower was the most annoying thing in the world, just make sure you close the bathroom door otherwise you'll get dozens of mosquito's and giant flying bugs half the size of your fist. Other than that, the view of the massive cliff whilst having a shower was amazing.

The hotel seemed to be run by a French family and weren't that friendly at all, the young girls (early 20's) never cracked a smile and always stared at my girlfriend when we walked past them, the father (I'm guessing?) only talked to people he looked familiar with during the meals.

Location wise is wasn't that great, there's just as quiet areas in the town centre, even though it's a 5-10 minute walk in the heat it can seem a bit annoying, and during a storm even more annoying. We stayed at The Banyan Villa after this, much better, lovely Thai Staff, clean, safe (from bugs) and nearer to everything.

Room Tip: 2nd/3rd floor rooms are best, wouldn't consider the bottom. For beaches, don't waste your ti...

Phi phi is an expensive island to stay on and mama beach is no exception. A nice hotel and the online photos do it justice but I feel I have had better value else where in Thailand. I would stay again though as the room was clean enough and nicely appointed.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Mama Beach for three nights, the rooms were very clean and pleasantly decorated. I wasn't keen on the open wall on the bathroom, some people would love that feature but I was getting eaten alive by Mosquitos and was constantly scared of finding a spider or cockroach in there.
The hotel is in a good location with its own private beach, just far enough from the main town to be nice and quiet.
One day I enquired about a massage, the receptionist couldn't find the massage lady but told me she'd let me know what time I could have one however nobody got back to me which was a bit disappointing.
The price was expensive for the standard of the hotel but that seems to be the case on Phi Phi in general
