Koh Phi Phi is a tourist destination of the worst kind, the arrival by ferry or speedboat via the main pier throws you onto a street full of bars, restaurants, “travel agencies”, ATMs and of course hotels. The Toh Ko Resort is away from all this, a 600 Baht taxi-boat ride or 100 Baht per person pick-up, on the other side of the island. Yes, the noisy long boats keep passing the resort, but we didn’t feel as much bothered by this as other reviewers. The beach is nice if not spectacular, the snorkeling somewhat disappointing as over 80% of the corals are dead and the fish-life accordingly reduced in number and splendor. The food is very good for such a small restaurant and the service friendly. A bar at one end of the resort serves less drinks than the restaurant and wholly without ice and plays loud music into the night, heard in our accommodation.

The accommodation itself (sea view fan bungalow) is majorly overpriced. The bamboo construction is very atmospheric, especially during a nightly thunderstorm the view from the balcony over the ocean is mind-blowing), but a cold water only shower is just not acceptable for 2200 Bhat (52 EUR / 75 USD), a solar-shower would be the least of what could be expected.

Toh Ko Beach Resort felt like our very own bit of paradise.

Arriving from the madness that is Koh Phi Phi harbour - by long boat, we simply couldn't remove the beaming grins from our faces as we approached the beach and were warmly welcomed by the owner.

On a cheapie backpacking three week holiday, this was near the last leg of our tour of Thailand, and we were only booked in to stay for two nights - planning to head to Koh Lanta afterwards. But, we were so impressed by our beach front bungalow, the beach, the bar & restaurant and feel of the place, we booked an additional three nights (5 in total).

The bungalows are basic, but you really do have everything you need. With a hammock chairs and table on the veranda - overlooking the sea, a clean room with double bed and mozzie net and hot water and electricity 6pm - 7am. We really didn't need anymore.

The resort puts on boat trips to neighbouring islands - Koh Phi Phi Ley ('The Beach') Mosquito Island, and Bamboo Island. They also hire out snorkels and fins so you can do plenty of snorkelling at the resort itself.

The beach is lovely, and although has it's fair share of little crabs - they're scared of you - so run away very quickly!

In the day time, you can either pay 100bt and get the resort's longboat to Phi Phi town, or trek the one hour it takes on foot through the jungle. This isn't for the faint hearted, the trek is very steep...and hairy at times - we saw a big family of BIG monkeys - right in our path! But I have to say, the view at the top of the hill - known as 'viewpoint' is spectacular - and looks out over all of Phi Phi.

In the evening, unless you fancy venturing into Koh Phi Phi (a one hour jungle walk in the dark or a premium night fare on a longboat) you can hangout in the resort restaurant which serves fantastic thai food and cheap cocktails and beer. We did this every night, and loved it.

We were recommended this place by a work colleague, and now I couldn't recommend it enough. Specifically, I think couples, small groups of friends and back packers would enjoy it here. It's a little rough and ready, but not too extreme basic!

Room tip: The Beach front bungalows are a little more expensive - but the view stepping out in the morning is SO worth it!

There's no denying Ko Phi Phi is one of the most stunning settings imaginable. The problem is that it is overrun. On the other side of the hill (a decent ramble) is this charming place run by a lovely woman and her family. They could not do enough to make us comfortable. The food is pretty decent and the terrace area is right on the beach. The beach itself is not the main attraction as it is a rocky at low tide but the sound of the waves as you fall asleep in the comfy bungalows is fantastic. We stayed about 3 nights and were really chilled. The owner organised an amazing snorkelling trip to Phi Phi Ley (the Beach) which was excellent (leave early and don't stay too long). One issue we had was when the sea was too rough it can be impossible to get a longtail back around the bottom of the island where it is roughest. We did find one guy but he effectively turfed us off his boat about 10 feet from shore. Going under the waves fully clothed in the dark was entertaining for my missus but less so for me. All in all a brilliant hideaway on the busy island.

Room tip: Rooms nearer the beach benefit from free wave soundtrack.

Apart from the problem they have with flies on still days, this place was like going back in time to the 1980's. Old style Thai resort on a quiet beach with beautiful clear water. A bit pricey for the budget traveller but you get what you pay for. They could clean up a bit behind the kitchens and the noise from the longtail boats passing by can get annoying but apart from that, the staff are friendly and the rooms are clean. There is quite decent snorkelling off the beach too.

Room tip: Choose a room further down the beach to avoid the noisy boats.

Lovely family operated resort on the quiet side of phi phi. A great place to get away from the busyness of phi phi. Food and service amazing! The beach front bamboo cabins are the best choice...romantic and private. Would definitely return here!
