My group of friends and I arrived in Koh Phangan on the 28th of December 2013 where we were greeted by a large number of Thai people asking us if we would like a Taxi boat. After a short walk to Haad Rin we arrived at our accomodation for the next week, 'Sea view, Sun rise resort. A perfect place to stay for a Kiwi. Run by other New Zealanders a little bit away from the main drag of the beach we had space to ourselves, an awesome menu and very chilled and friendly staff to mingle with. We stayed untill the 2nd of January. Buckets of alcohol are sold all down the beach but keep an eye on what they are putting in them. Watch out for silverback's and enjoy the house music. Awesome place, awesome time. Definitely go see "magic mountain" and make the most of your time on the island. There is more to do there than just party.

Everyone says the half moon party is nowhere near as crazy as the full moon party - if this is the case, the full moon must be out-of-this-world ridiculous, because the half moon party was insane!

The half moon is based in the centre of the jungle on Koh Phangan within a big venue, and the 600 baht door fee will get you a free drink, CD of the night's DJs and entry to one of the most ridiculous nights of your life.

My friend and I got a speedboat transfer that night from Koh Samui for 1400 baht - the speedboat never picked us up at the scheduled time of 6am the next morning to take us back to Samui, which could've ended worse than it did for two young blonde Australian girls with no working phones and minimal cash! Without going into details, just be wary about which company you use - or even use the reliable ferry service between islands, which we ended up having to do.

On entry to the half moon party, you can pay to get some fabulous neon paint designs drawn on your body - everyone inside gets them done. I had flames painted up both of my arms for 400 baht - barter with the body artists for a good price! Don't wear any clothes that you don't want ruined - most people are in some form of singlet and shorts or a skirt.

You'll meet people from all corners of the globe there - it was a really diverse mix of travellers. Everyone is in a great mood and are there for a good time; I didn't see a single fight or indiscretion in the 7 hours I was there, and it felt far safer than clubs and streets I've been to in other parts of Thailand, Europe and even Australia!

Once you get to the main part of the party, you can buy buckets of drink for 490 baht - pricier than buckets in other places around Thailand, however it's safe to say that two buckets of vodka red bull will get you extremely drunk (warning: the red bull has different ingredients than in western countries - it is lethal). 2,500 baht could easily cover drinks for the night, even if you're planning to stay past sunrise - unless you decide to indulge in what they're selling on the upper balcony. Including "special cigarettes" and "mushy milkshakes", the half moon party openly sells these items (and more) to anyone who wants them, advertising them with big signs. They will drain your money pretty quickly, but a solid 50% of the party indulges in them, so it's up to you!

There is one DJ stage and they only play trance music, with a variety of artists spinning the decks all night. This is really good if you've been hitting the vodkas or indulging in something a little more "mushy", but if you're more into mainstream party music and you're not planning on having a huge night, you may find it a little boring - however there's still loads of people sitting down and chatting around the place so never fear, you'll still have fun! The place itself is really cool; there's colourful lanterns and artworks everywhere, an amazing light display and sweet balcony views of the dance floor. My friend and I were initially concerned it would be really crazy and we'd lose one another/die, but as it's inside a venue it's quite easy to go off separately to the bar or the bathrooms and still find each other afterwards.

Overall a brilliant, colourful, crazy night, definitely recommend it to anyone in the Phangan or Samui area with a taste for partying!

Half Moon party was so much better, well organised, amazing decor and uniques in the Jungle. Safe for my daughter and her boyfriend. The longer they were there, the better the music got. What a build up.

Think about the biggest party you ever been to, then multiply the size by 10, and now put them on the beach. What you get is a sea full of half-naked human beings on booze, looking for sex and going all out.

The good? The people, the atmosphere, the friends you make at the end of the night, the music, the party, the beach.
The bad? No or little toilet access, rowdy sexed-up men, too crowded, pollution to the beach.
