We arrived in Koh Phangan a few days before the full moon and lucked out with an available beach hut at this resort on the Sunset beach side of Haad Rin, which is the opposite side to the Sunrise, where the main party happens (although it's only a 10-minute walk or two minute drive). It's near enough to feel the vibe, but far enough away to escape when you need some sleep (trust me, it happens).
The accommodation was an absolute bargain, with a large comfy bed and large clean bathroom, and a view of the sea from the hammock on the balcony (although the beach is a bit grim on the Sunset side - but hey, for a view of the sea on the Sunrise beach side we met people paying at least 3 times as much!). The hut did get a bit on the warm side during the day, but we can't blame them for the weather - we just kept the east facing window shut and the door open during the hottest part of the day, or went out for a swim.
However, the thing that made Charung special was that from the moment we arrived the staff did everything in their power to make us happy. They let us check in early (we came on the night boat so arrived rather bedraggled at 7am), the bike they rented us was almost brand new and the best one we've rented on our travels so far, they gave us a discount on the extra night we ended up staying and helped us organise our onward travel.
This last was some of the best customer service we have received in Thailand; hell, anywhere in ASEA. When the lady at the front desk (I'm ashamed that I don't know her name but I think she owns the place) called up and found out that the slow (cheap!) boat to Koh Tao the next day was full (not her fault, this is normal and we should have booked earlier), she not only managed to secure us a booking on the next express boat, she gave us a discount of 50 baht each and organised us a private air-conditioned taxi down to the ferry terminal at no extra cost. When we arrived at the terminal, there was a gentleman waiting for us to register our tickets (mandatory apparently), and he stood in line for us to get this done. Honestly, I've never felt so smug than whilst watching hungover full-mooners fall out of overcrowded minibuses in the midday heat and then have to stand in line for 10-15 minutes at the terminal.
In response to one of the reviews below I really just wanted to say that, yes, in terms of accommodation, you absolutely do get what you pay for, and probably more. But to me the most important factor, the service, was, even in the midst of the full moon madness, priceless.
