“Perfect for romantic vacation!”
Reviewed June 20, 2013

This hotel was one of our favorites in Thailand (we were on our honeymoon). So many good things to say about it, specifically because the staff is so great and the prices are unbeatable.

First, we made a mistake with our booking and booked for the wrong days (what happens when you work full time while planning a 3-wk vacation). We realized the morning of, and called them in a panic. The staff was so helpful in helping us rearrange our booking, which was through Hotels.com. There was no hassle at all and they rebooked us without an extra charge for the days that we needed. We also planned a scuba trip the day that we checked out and the staff was amazingly helpful at planning our return trip to Ko Samui and even lent us hotel towels for the day without us asking for them.

Second, the location is perfect. Yes, it is far from the main drag and a hassle to get to from Ko Samui, but it is totally worth it and exactly what we wanted! The beach is wonderful, albeit a bit rocky in places, and with only a few resorts on it, it is so completely not crowded that i really feels like you have the whole thing to yourself. It was exactly how I imagined a honeymoon to be in a fairytale. We had a beachfront room and it was incredible to open the door and be right on the beach, just steps from the water.

Third, the prices. Who knows? It's relatively new so the prices are likely to rise. But for now, the prices are out of this world, and the value for what you get is absolutely incredible.

The little things:
The pool is small, but nice, and there was rarely anyone there, so we went in a few times. To be honest, there's almost no need for the pool because the beach is so nice.

The food was quite good (we ate one dinner and one lunch), and the chef would send little treats at night, which was a nice touch. The breakfasts were very nice, typical upscale Thailand breakfast with eggs to order, pancakes, croissants, fruit, etc.

The one negative is that they mistakenly overcharged us twice. At dinner we were originally charged for 4 entrees when we ordered 2, and when we checked out we were charged for taking something from the minibar, which we definitely did not. They quickly reversed the charges, so no big deal, but it would nice if they were a bit more careful about those things.

Overall, I would recommend this resort to anyone looking to get away and relax.

Room Tip: Beachfront rooms are totally worth it, they make the whole experience so special!

We got a beachfront room at Buri Rasa and it was perfect for rest and relaxation. We opened our door to the beautiful waterfront, walked to the left a few steps to the restaurant/bar, or walked to the right to get a beachside massage (so cheap!) at the hotel spa. We also took a cooking class, which was one of the highlights of our trip:

The express cooking class lasts a little over one hour and is led by the hotel’s resident chef at a day and time that is convenient to guests, for approximately $30. All classes are one-on-one with instruction in English (a translator and some of the chef’s assistants are present too) and students prepare two main entrees and a Thai dessert, which they select from a variety of menu options before class.

Class Highlights:
* Classes are taught outside with lovely beautiful beach views
* You make enough food for two people (so someone can join you for lunch!), and enjoy your meal in the outdoor restaurant - it’s a bargain for a private cooking class and lunch for two!
* Classes are quick, which allows you more time to enjoy a beachside massages and R&R at Buri Rasa!

Room Tip: The beachfront rooms are worth the extra cash!

The Buri Rasa is a lovely hotel. The service is great and all the staff are very friendly, helpful and sweet.
Our beach front room was lovely, no problem with the sun loungers as the staff hang a reserved sign on them with your beachfront room number so they don't get pinched by other guests who have not booked beach front rooms.. I think I read some reviews which said this was a problem, but it seems to have been solved.
The pool is also quite empty, so maybe it only gets busy with kids during peak season. It is certainly an accommodating and family friendly hotel - there were a few happy little ones playing on the beach. It is remote though, so I would think twice about bringing a very small baby here in case they became ill maybe better to stick to somewhere with a good nearby medical centre or hospital.
We loved our bath towel in an elephant shape so much that we did not use it for 3 days! The nightly sweets are lovely also.
Breakfast in the hotel is good, I read some other reviews here which I think were not kind about it, but I was pleasantly surprised. Pastries (pain au chocolat, croissants etc), yummy omelettes, fruit salad, cold meats and cheese and toast & cereal with fruits juice, tea and coffee. its lovely to sit eating watching the morning beach activity, and listening to the waves. The service at breakfast time is great too!
We tried lunch on the day of our arrival and found the food very bland, devoid of any spice perhaps to cater for the tastes of many Northern European tourists who visit here.. We asked for spicy, but not Thai spicy and got the blandest tom yum and red curry ever. Coupled with the dreadful crooning lounge music cover versions and Andrew Lloyd Webber tunes that was a bad experience and we won't eat in the restaurant again.
The only real complaint i have about the hotel is the appalling choice of music they blast from the bar - Kylie and Jason, Phil Collins covers, really loudly. When lying on the beach I found it really unpleasant and had to move far away or wear earplugs. I suppose its just personal taste, but most guests are under 40, and its such a a stunning beach that in my personal opinion, some chilled Cafe del Mar or Thai reggae playing as quiet background music would be more fitting..
Thong Nai Pan Noi is a stunning place, and after coming here as a backpacker years ago and feeling like it was paradise I must say I was a little disappointed to see what it has become. The beach is still quiet and peaceful, but it has really lost that Bohemian vibe, which is sad but inevitable. There are now jet skis on the beach and the restaurants now have tables and chairs instead of Thai style cushions.
The best restaurant in the village by far is Again and Again. The quality of the food and the care with which it is prepared is second to none. It is a small family run restaurant, cooking by Mom, and service by daughter. The tom kha, tom yum, red curry soup, papaya salad, mango sticky rice and coconut / mango lassis come highly recommended! I was so happy to see that this restaurant has stood the test of time since my last visit in 2008 amongst the high end resorts. Just a little sad to see the cushions gone and replaced with tables and chairs. We were eating here religiously, as it was so good but we cheated on them one night to try Mango restaurant. Bad choice, the red curry was made with chilli flakes - no excuse for no fresh chillis in Thailand, that was a first for me! Papaya salad was not a patch on Again and Again, and the pad thai was just ok.
Another restaurant which is good and has stood the test of time is the Lao /Thai place (can't remember the name, but they do cooking lessons) and Handsome Sandwiches - yummy tuna sandwiches and burgers!
Do your shopping before you leave Bangkok as Thong Nai Pan Noi is expensive and there is no haggling.
There are a few massage places in the village and the hotels including the Buri Rasa all have them. Because of not enjoying the bar music (audible from the hotel massage area) from the Buri Rasa we tried Warin (Toy) Massage in the village and we went back every day, the ladies were so fantastic.
I also recommend The Yoga Studio in Thong Nai Pan Yai, set in the jungle at the home of Melanie, the teacher. We had a great yoga lesson. It cost us 300 baht to get there with the hotel, but just 100 to get back with a local taxi from Thong Nai Pan Yai (although admittedly we did not come back in air con 4x4). Also we saw a really big green snake on our walk from the studio which was cool!
All in all the Buri Rasa is a lovely hotel / resort where you have great service and all your holiday wishes at your command! All staff are lovely and welcoming, the beach front rooms are a pleasure and if you prefer European food and love songs the restaurant is good. Don't be afraid to try the village eateries though, you will be welcome, and you won't get sick even if they do look somewhat dingy. And if you try Again and Again you will be impressed by some of the most delicious home cooked Thai food ever!

Room Tip: Beach front rooms are great. The cheaper beach front rooms are closer to the bar so if you don't...

During this trip, I stayed at 6 hotels, and this one was BY FAR the best of the bunch. Everything from the service (there was a sweetheart named Banana, she was just adorably kind and helpful!) to the hotel grounds itself - perfection.

Getting there - One key thing to note is that once you get off the ferry (usually from Samui) there are minivans ready to take you to various parts of the island - but they will only leave the port if there are more than 5 people (or you can pay a surcharge to leave immediately with fewer passengers). The best thing to do is have a chat with some people on the ferry ride over and see if anyone is headed up that way so you can get a van together. While it wont save you any money (they charge per person), you wont have to wait for that 5 person minimum and can leave shortly after getting off the ferry.

This is not a resort for the young rowdy crowd that wants to party it up and go full moon crazy every night. We were a young group of 4 girls, but after a whirlwind tour of Cambodia and mainland Thailand, we were looking forward to a relaxing first stop on the islands. I'd also read that the beach is much nicer on the north side of the islands - this was completely true! The beach is great, soft sand, cool waters, and we had no trouble getting chairs or service from the staff. We even got wi-fi on the beach!

We did visit the Black Moon party and it is quite a ride from the hotel - also, we requested a ride and a pickup truck was brought for us, leading to one of the coolest but scariest rides ever through the island. Make sure to request a van if you are uncomfortable with the idea of driving around at night in the back of a pickup seated on benches.

The hotel is close to a little strip with bars and restaurants, I had some great meals at a small restaurant located right outside the hotel (I wish I could remember the name!) Either way, there are a few great massage places, restaurants, and small bars in that small area conveniently located to the hotel.

A great stay at a great hotel - My only regret is not staying at the Buri Rasa on Samui!!!

We stayed at Buri Rasa Koh Phangan for two nights during the last week of May. To say the least location is superb, property is tastefully done up and staff was very co-operative and friendly. Surely recommend for a stay.
