Same Same Cookery School

We went on bicycle ride to the marked. Made one dish together and two separate dishes where we could choose from a menu. The lady chef was very nice and spoke very good english.

Hello,

I am writing to inform you of the awful cooking class experience I had last week.

Let me begin with something that is simply inexcusable. The website is misleading as to the services of the daily course that is provided.

1. The website lists you prepare 4 dishes. In reality, you prepare 3 dishes and one of these dishes is chosen as a group for everyone to make. So in reality you only get to chose 2 Thai dishes to repair. I don't think this really is advertised truthfully.
2. We received only the photocopied recipes of our dishes as opposed to a thai recipe book that includes more than the 1 starter and 2 chosen dishes.
3. We did not receive an apron (which the email quoted we received after the cooking class).
4. We did not receive any certificate of completion of the class

On top of these errors of what the daily course was said to include and what it actually did include there were other problems with the course I felt detracted from the experience.

-There were 11 people in the class and all the activities were poorly organized. Some people were cooking while others chopping and there was not great communication between the teacher and the students.
-The cooking station was poorly ventilated so while everyone was frying their meal they were also paralyzed with a coughing frenzy.
-In other thai cooking courses they instruct you on how to make the curry paste yourself if you chose a curry. At Same Same, the curry paste was bought from the market.
-No instruction on how to adjust the spices and sauces in your dish to make it more/less salty/sweet/spicy/etc. Everyone adds same quantities which makes for less variety in flavor.

Overall, the best thing about the cooking class was not the cooking class but meeting the other people in the group and sharing the "experience" with them.

Finally, I think the course is very overpriced for what the cooking class includes.

we had a great time at the Same Same Thai Cookery School located in the My Wok and Me resturant in Thong Sala Koh Phangan.
Our Chef Oi was so lovely, had great English and was very helpful.
The location was beautiful, clean and funky modern.
I went with my husband and we got to pick 3 dishes each and got the recipes to take home. It was soooooo much food and the best food we've eaten all trip (if i do say so myself lol)
A fun bonus :) we rode bikes to the local markets to buy supples :)
Look out master chef!! ;p

I made reservations for this cooking class 3 months as a private class before after scouring for cooking classes in Koh Phangan for my family - after reconfirming our reservation 4-5 days before, when we arrived they told us that they thought that the reservation was for the next day. However, the chef booked for our group was able to sort it out and arrived within half an hour so we didnt have to wait.

They had available 6 sets of menu and we were allowed to mix and match the dishes (a total of 4 dishes). We walked with the chef to the nearby market (15 minute walk, at least) to buy the materials. This may be interesting to the tourists not from SEA but for us we have seen most of the ingredients in our own markets. Nevertheless, it was still quite nice to have a browse in the market.

After we have walked back we started with our dishes. Our chef was attentive, spoke excellent English and accomodating in helping us take photos and answering our questions. He even helped teach me Thai language while we learned how to cook - Green Curry, Tom Yum Soup, Fresh Spring Rolls and Papaya Salad. the cooking stations were open air and everything was clean.

All in all I enjoyed the cooking class and I received the recipe and apron at the end of the class. Great way to learn about thai cooking and try something other than the beach/sea stuff. The class was held near thong sala (you cant walk from the pier though) in a restaurant called Kread Klaw (next to zuta shop).

It was certainly more value for money at only THB1150 compared to THB2000 in Koh Phangan.
