“Fantastic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2013

My wife and I stayed here for 2 weeks and we had the most marvelous time. We had the junior sea view suite in the Jasmin building which has a fantastic view over the Thai gulf. The staff did everything to make us feel good. We have to stress out we visited Thailand 4 times before, and have seen a lot of places. As my wife is pregnant, and we were in no mood of travelling the whole holiday again, we decided to stay at Koh Phangan. I booked the Sunset Hill Resort mainly due to the positive reactions on Tripadvisor, and believe us; they were right! The (very few) less positive reactions must have been written by people who never been to Asia before. This was the best resort we ever visited for this price. We would like to thank Sylvester, Art and the rest of the crew for 2 weeks of complete relaxation! Hope we will be back when our daughter is born....;-)

Dear Mark and Karianne,

Thank you for staying with us and for posting this great review. It was a real pleasure for us to enjoy your positive energy and see your big smiles during your 2 week stay with us. We sincerely hope to see you back on our hill when your daughter is born. Thanks again for the amazing Dutch cheese which we enjoyed for lunch again today!
Warm regards,

Previous reviews are true in which the views are very lovely as well as the rooms. All that in terms of what you have read is true and fine. However, this stay was an odd and uneasy experience. The food at the resort must be noted. I do not recommend that you order food if the kitchen is "busy." As a result the main lady who prepares the food is taking orders and some random Thai man is preparing the food. I found 2 hairs in my salad and one in my excuse of a sandwich. The salad was not like the previous times I had ordered it as it was one huge piece of lettuce dumped on a plate with some chicken and it tasted like chemicals, perhaps the water treating chemicals they use to prepare food but forgot to completely rinse off this time, it was gross. As we ate a lot at the resort (because with this location you have little choice...) we realized something about the food was off. Our worries were affirmed as one of us had food poisoning most definitely from the hotel meal and spent the night at the 24 hour emergency clinic hooked up to an IV. When we informed one of the managers he completely dodged what we had just told him and said "so do you want food."

In addition, for the amount of money you pay each night and spend at the resort in general, you get nothing in return. The breakfast is not free even though we were informed upon arrival that it was. Even the cheapest of hostels provide a complimentary breakfast, and this stunning resort cannot throw something in for its guests? In addition, they advertise certain events and shuttles (to the full moon for example) in a sense in which they give you the idea that it is complimentary or in general just something the hotel is doing nicely for its guests, but you always receive a bill at the end, such as their pre-full moon BBQ (not sure how or why they charged for that). To add to it, the hotel is full of signs and warnings, such as 10,000 baht sign above the toilet if you put toilet paper in the toilet, staining the sheets with full moon body paint, etc. In fact there is an entire rule book in each room. This is not a hostel, if you are charging this much per night, act like it, don't school your guests.

Lastly, the LOCATION. WARNING. If you want a SECLUDED vacation spot then this IS the place for you. If you do not plan on going into town please stay here. If you do, do not. The first few times going into town you are fine with the distance of this resort but after a few days you absolutely dread having to taxi it back. In addition, each taxi charges about 100 baht more to take you up the drive way of the hotel for some reason, which is not the resorts fault, but something you should be aware of. So always make sure when you negotiate taxi prices that it includes them driving up the hill.

Please read the reviews on Booking.com for this resort before booking, as they are more truthful than the ones I have encountered on TripAdvisor.

Room Tip: All rooms are very nice and lovely.

Sunset-Hill, Manager at Sunset Hill Resort, responded to this review, August 9, 2013
Dear Leila, Julia and Dana,

Thank you for your valuable feedback and sharing your overall experience. It is very disappointing to hear that you did not have a great time at our resort, contrary to most of our guests. Please allow us to explain and clarify your feedback.

All our bookings through booking.com are not inclusive of breakfast which is clearly displayed on the booking.com webpage and also on all booking confirmations send. We are sorry if one of the team member did not confirm this upon check in. We have briefed the front office team to ensure that we give all our guests the correct information when they check in.

Regarding your experience with our restaurant we do apologize for the dissatisfaction you feel, we will take appropriate action to make sure that our food will always have a great standard even in very busy times such as the full moon party during which you stayed. We have one of the best water cleaning systems in our resort and without using any chemicals.

With regard to the food poisoning mentioned, one of our team members met with your group when you came back at around 9am from the overnight fullmoon party and acknowledged that Dana had a problem with food poisoning and dehydration. She asked if we could do anything to help (Dana gave her 120 Baht) and 15 minutes later our team brought 2 electrolyte drinks and some (complimentary) apple juices for your group. We would like to note that we had 55 other guests in our resort during the Full Moon party and none of them have reported food poisoning so it might also be caused by food or drinks consumed on the full moon party night.

You mentioned being surprised at being charged for eating at our BBQ (which you think should be complimentary because we advertised the event) and for the taxi to the fullmoon party. We gave out the BBQ menu with prices (average 100 thb per dish) to all our guests including the 3 of you, so all our guests acknowledged the price before they ordered. We have also informed all our guests about the taxi prices and gave them a taxi voucher with the price (200 thb per person) on it.

Regarding the signs and warnings in our apartments, we also dislike to have to put these up but unfortunately we have had some bad experiences in the past with guests damaging our property, especially during the famous Full Moon parties. The 10,000 thb fine (which we have never actually charged) is only imposed for smoking in the room, guests can smoke on the balcony.
Lastly our location, we are indeed located on a quiet hill (hence the view) but definitely not secluded, everything our guests need for a great holiday is available in the resort or the nearby village and beaches but a car or motorbike (we can arrange for you) is needed to visit the main port or the party areas.

We again are very sorry that you did not leave our resort completely satisfied and we will do our utmost best to improve and make our guests bring a good memory home. We would like to thank you for your valuable feedback which helps us to improve our service and also provides us the opportunity to give some helpful advice to other tripadvisor readers.

Best regards,
The Sunset Hill Management

The people that work here are the nicest and most friendly people i met throughout my month long trip in Thailand. They are happy to help you with all your needs. I would definately recommend staying here. Ideal for couples as it is such a romantic location with amazing sea views. Absolutely beautiful place, be sure to make friends with the manager. His nickname is Art and he is an absolute legend. Great place to stay!

Room Tip: Pick a sea view room. It is not worth staying here unless you get a sea view. We had a sea view room...

I was visiting the place only for two night but I have to come back again. I am travelling a lot in business and for pleasure and I haven't seen for very long time such a nice room with outstanding terrace and see view. Thsi is not you can find everywhere. I must add that teh building and whole are is very clean which is not very often case in Thailand. The atmosphere is creating by Dutch people and this is for sure the key to success. I can recommend this place for everyone, who is looking for astonish, relaxing place. Katarzyna from Poland

Room Tip: All rooms with terrace have breathtaking view!!!!

Truly the most stunning resort we’ve ever stayed in. The staff, facilities, views, room, location were all perfect. We did not want to leave and would highly recommend this resort to anyone! Particularly good for couples – the setting is so romantic and peaceful, with so many stunning beaches nearby to choose from. We will certainly be returning!

We stayed at Sunset Hill as a family of 4. The children 4 and 5 yrs old. We planned for a week of total relaxation on Koh Phagnan and that is exactly what we found at Sunset Hill. The location for this resort is well chosen, privately located on a hill side overwatching the Gulf of Thailand toward Anthong Marine park. This facing towards the east brings what the resort's name promises...sunset!! Beautiful. We stayed in the 2 bedroom rooftop appartement, which included a private sundeck with jacuzzi and loads of privacy...it was great to just sit out there during the day for some sunbathing and during the evenings to relax, read and have a drink. Besides this great appartment there was a great infinity pool, which was a major attraction to our kids. They spent quite some hourse splashing through the water there. The staff was very friendly and approached us in a personal manner, which makes you feel very welcome as guests. Our two girls immediately befriended the staff at the desk. Due to the private location of the resort we had no worries letting the girls wander around or go to the lounge on there own, even being only 4 and 5. We ate/lunched regularly at the resorts restaurant, where they offer good food for very reasonable prices. During our stay work on an outside terrace was completed so outdoor dining is now also a possibilty. There is still some work in progress on the resort, finishing a new (very goodlooking) building with rooms. Great effort is made to minimize impact on the guests and we never had any disturbance of it whatsoever.
All in all we had a great stay....just what we wanted and best of all...we were totally relaxed as we moved on for our further travel plans....we definitely recomment Sunset Hill to everyone trying to find a quiet, beautiful place to unwind and enjoy the good life!! Thank you Sunset for a fantastic week.

Room Tip: The 2 bedroom with rooftop is a superb place for a family with children.
