Sunset Hill Resort
Ranked #13 of 91 Hotels in Ko Pha Ngan

Reviewed August 17, 2012 via mobile

We booked a six night stay here but we left after our second night and went back to samui. Quite simply because it was not for us. Upon arrival we did explain it was our anniversary. We had been to several other hotels before this, as we had been in Thailand for five weeks and this was our last stop. All other hotels had made an effort by decorating our bed etc and other small gestures of good will. However at Sunset hill we did not receive such gestures and instead were told it would cost us 2500 baht for a bottle of prosecco and two massages to celebrate our anniversary. Rooms are ok and a good size with beautiful views. However it was not spotless. The pool area was very small and only had a maximum of eight sun loungers and when the hotel has 30 plus rooms there is simply not enough space around the pool. These loungers were taken both days by one family. The beach is quite dirty and rocky so it isn't ideal. The situation of the hotel is up a steep hill, so it is isolated. There are no nice restaurants with walking distance, so you need a bike or some other form of transport.  Really this hotel is ideal if you want to cook your own meals as there is a kitchen. There are two bars, one of which we did not experience.  But the other 'Sea Garden 2' has a decent pool you can use if you buy a drink. We ordered 2 mojitos and they were awful. I tried to be positive the next day and went for breakfast. I ordered bacon and eggs but the eggs were vile. The food is poor standard cheap but poor. One of the chefs I actually saw picking her nose and cooking food, which is not acceptable. However, they do order pasta and pizza from a local Italian which is delicious. But I would not eat anything from the hotel. Once we left there was no one there to help us or wave us off like all other hotels we have stayed at. We changed our ticket to go back to samui early and the thai receptionist did help us with this. Kamilla did explain she would get back to us regarding our money after speaking to adam as we left a few nights earlier so we had lost a fair bit of money. However, she didnt get back to us and we left 6.15am the next morning snd no ome was in reception. Adam really helped us he took us to the seven eleven and waited for us. The customer service was good and we can't fault that but the restaurant, location, pool and finishing touches were extremely poor. It's upsetting when it's the last stop of your holiday and you have to leave because of all of the above. If being in the middle of no where is for you then here is the place but there are more exceptional hotels in Thailand at a cheaper price. So I won't be recommending sunset hill to anyone unfortunately.

We selected sunset hill because it looked beautiful from the photos, and we were not disappointed. What we did not expect, however, was the wonderful customer service we received from Kamila. She made our stay extra special simply because she cared about us having a good experience. It was my sister's 25th, and the hotel made us 2 sundaes and gave us 2 changs on the house. It was a small touch but it made such a huge difference! The view is stunning from the lounge area and the infinity pool is amazing. It was the best place we stayed, and a highlight of our trip. Stay here, I can't rate it enough!

Last winter we spend our holliday on SSH resort. Ask the taxidriver to drive up the road uphill. You can park and turn on the top. Enjoy the view. The best on koh phangan. SSH is situated on a perfect place on the island. Beaches, restaurants, music, scooter rent, washing clothes etc all in the direct neighbourhood. SSH is build on à Hill and is à quiet place to be. Not a place for small children and elderly people. The manager will be helpfull with all your questions. Enjoy your stay.

This hotel is great for couples as it is a bit far from the party scene on the island. The staff here is extremely helpful as they can make great recommendations for places to visit around the island and arrange for you to have motorbikes be rented (200B per day). They also organize a taxi to pick you up from the hotel to take you to the Full Moon Party (about a 30 minute drive). Everything about the hotel is great...the rooms are huge and super clean, come with DVD players (they have DVDs available in the lounge), the food is good, the pool is gorgeous. Highly encouraged to rent motorbikes to get around the island or else you may feel a bit "stuck" at the hotel. The hotel does have a daily shuttle that drops you off at a nearby beach and 711. The beach they drop you off at is great and is a fantastic place to catch the sunset while having a fabulous dinner right on the beach! Quick tip:when arranging a price with taxi drivers, make sure to include that you want to be dropped off at the top of the hill where the hotel is located or else you may be walking about 5 minutes uphill...no fun =(

I stayed here for two nights with my husband in July, and it is such a gem we wished that we had booked longer! The standard of accommodation for the price is amazing, the room has everything that you would ever need, hair dryer, plasma telly massive comfy bed, a classy kitchenette tea and coffee making facilities they even have a DVD player and you can borrow DVDs to watch in the comfort of your room. The bathroom was immaculate and just what I needed after staying in a Basic hut on a koh Tao with a toilet that didn't flush etc! The best thing though is the view from the restaurant it is simply a beautiful panorama of the ocean and nearby islands. The hotel has great staff and it was great to have someone who spoke fluent English which i know is lazy but was really convinient, the staff were exceptionally helpful especially Camilla who welcomed us and gave us an orientation/ hints and tips. The only small negative I could possibly comment on was the food in the restaurant which is a little pricey and the quality is much the same as in cheaper restaurants and the service was a little slow. There is an infinity pool and comfy sunbeds, this would an make excellent resort for families as well, you would however need to hire some form of transport though as walking up to the resort in the heat was a killer! I would definitely recommend to friend and family! :)

My boyfriend and I recently stayed at Sunset Hill using a voucher, although this didn't give us any less of a great experience. The staff were extremely friendly and sat down with us and showed us the best places to go on a map. As already stated in many reviews the view really is amazing, we hired a scooter for the week and went from beach to beach as recommended. It was a perfect stay and i would definately go back.

Myself and my boyfriend have stayed on Koh Phangan 4 times and Sunset Hill was by far the best place we stayed. I really can't fault the resort - the gorgeous views, quality and decor of rooms, super friendly staff (big thanks to Adam) and the food in the restaurant. It is a little way out from Haad Rin but a taxi is only 200 baht (£4) each and takes about 30 minutes or you can rent a motor bike for a day for about 200 baht so not a big deal and so much nicer than staying in the centre of things. I have to say after reading the one bad review on here I was a little bit wary of booking this place as I have a huge phobia about cockroaches but can honestly say that I am so glad I chose to ignore it - I didn't see a single one throughout my stay here - the room was super clean - definitely not the sort of place that would have an infestation of cockroaches!! Not sure what type of room the girl stayed in but we booked the Executive Studio Grace and I would definitely recommend it, beautifully decorated with a huge balcony and all for just £42 a night which in my opinion os a bargain - if you are going to Koh Phangan you need to book this hotel - you will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: Book the Executive Studio Grace in the Rose Building!!!
