“We were mislead by other reviews”
Reviewed February 11, 2012

we arrived at coconut beach after two taxis, and 300baht/person later. The road was partially washed out, and the bridge had colapsed. It was quite the 5 1/2 hour journey from lamai, on samui.

The bungalows were basic accommodation. The toilets are not flush, which is okay, except for the "smell" you sometimes get around the resort or at the restaurant when someone is washing things down.

The restaurant has decent food at an okay price, not too much more than you'd pay in town. Don't bother with the western food, stick to the thai, it's much better.

The downfalls: 1. Expensive to get there and around. If you want to leave the resort you need to rent a scooter. 200baht/day decent price, but taxis cost a bit.

2. Electricity only on from 2pm-2am. Not usually a problem, but when it's really hot it would be nice to have a fan available during peak hours.

3. The kitchen is closed a few hours a day, and you are not supposed to eat at the other resorts. There is a sign in the bungalows that you are expected to eat there. Could get the boot if you don't respect that.

4. English is not widely spoken. Many many misunderstandings. And we speak a little Thai. The owners do not understand English very well, and don't seem too keen on understanding.

5. Family business, near fist fight broke out with family members yelling and shoving 2 feet away from our dinner table. They didn't seem to care that we were eating.

6. They are a bit tight with the money. Don't forget to remind them that they are over charging you for taxi fare, or to get your key deposit back. They will not volunteer this.

The upside: beautiful beach, excellent snorkelling, away from the tourist trap.

Coconut Beach consists of blue rooved bugalows, set among well tended pretty gardens, linked with pebble dash pathways. The bungalows are set into the hill, so many have a sea view, but this means that some of the paths/steps are quite steep in places so not suitable for the less mobile. The bungalows are spacious, with large verandahs on which to watch the sunsets. There is no hot water but the water in the tank remains warm enough for a comfortable shower. There is no electricity until early evening, but this was no problem at all, and at night when all the generators in Haad Khom are switched off you have total peace and quiet and darkness. So not the place if you are looking for anywhere lively !! The restaurant area is very attractive and has steps leading down to the beach. The beach iself is idyllic. Massage is available, along with hammocks, chairs etc. The sand down the steps is like talcum powder,There were very few people there, so it was very peaceful.Even the longboat that called to see if anyone wanted to go to another bay had a quiet engine !!
There is a small reef offshore, but the water gets very shallow and it is difficult to get to except for a few hours early in the day. Also all the masks and snorkels availabe to loan fron Coconut Beach were old and uesless, serious snorkelers should bring their own. There are 3 other small resorts similar set up to Coconut Beach along Haad Khom bay all hidden behind the palm trees that fringe the crescent shaped bay. So it is possible to go elsewhere to eat, although we found the food rarther uninspiring.
That bring us to the only real draw back for some to Coconut Beach and Haad Khom, and that is its isolation. Being the northernmost point of Koh-phangan, it is necessary to travel back to the south for a variety of places to eat-although nearby Chalokolum village has some good fish restaurants, you still need transport. Many people choose to stay at Coconut Beach for a long stayf or the total peace and quiet, and rent scooters to nip the shops and for a change of scene to eat. Food at Coconut Beach was ok.Nothing spectacular, but a good breakfast. The lady owner Pen was very nice and friendly, and helpful. Her staff were friendly, terrible at English, and slightly excentric !!!!!!!!!
Liked- Everything
Disliked- Lack of choice of food.
