“Ancient Realm @ Kantiang Bay....”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

Ancient Realm has recently moved from KD beach to Kantiang Bay, including bringing the swimming pool with them. They offer excellent value for money, including a free welcome drink at the bar, a free pair of massages, and a wonderful free breakfast's. Vince is a charming, wonderful and helpful.
The resort is only a few minutes from the beach, and has a rooftop restaurant. The staff are friendly and one member Oi, is outstanding.
Will return again next year

My husband and I stayed at the Ancient Realm at the end of January this year and we and a reasonably enjoyable experience. It is on KD beach, near some rocks but you can walk further down and swim at a rock free area so it is not a problem. We stayed in a beach front hut - however it is not really on the beach as you still have the (very small, somewhat dirty and completely unused) pool, and restaurant tables between you and the water, so although you can see the sea, to be honest it is not really worth the extra money to pay for a beach front.
The room looked a bit old, but it was clean and decorated well. I thought I'd like the outdoor bathrooms but I found it rather annoying, standing on stones and dodging plants in the shower, and the steps down to the bathroom are incredibly steep and have shells embedded in the concrete - ours had long been broken so they were also very sharp to step on.
The food was okay, we had a few meals there and found them fine, although the breakfasts were pretty basic but I think probably about as good as you're going to get for a small hotel like this. We spend our evenings trying various restaurants along the beach, there is no need to spend all your time here. We didn't bother with the bar as there are some pretty cool beach bars further along, but they seemed busy enough when we stayed there.
The hotel arranged bike and helmet hire for us for a reasonable price, and also snorkeling trips for us, with no problem. They did also book a ferry to Phuket for us and told us the wrong time we would be collected (I checked 4 times because the time told by the girl at reception did not sound correct but she was adamant the time told us was correct - it wasn't, and we ended up missing our final breakfast, hastily packing out bits, and incurring dirty looks from other travellers collected prior to us as we almost caused them to miss the ferry!).
Over all, it was was enjoyable enough but we're going to try somewhere else on the island when we return next February. I've heard though that they are refurbishing soon, and I will have no hesitation in returning after the hotel has been done up.

The rooms are made up really carefully and the staff are so welcoming and can't do enough for you. I was really impressed with the effort they had gone to, we were even greeted with a basket of presents. The bathroom is totally different than anything I've ever experienced before but charming just like the rest of the resort. The outside areas are a little grubby in places but the rooms are clean and tidy. The beach where the resort is situated is one that fishermen use everyday so be prepared to see some mess and a little debris rather than a spotless beach. A short walk Southwards is another beach which is beautifully clean but way more popular with tourists.
Oi the barlady is fabulous, she's always happy to go the extra mile she made us sad to be leaving. The banana and mango pancakes are delicious and the breakfasts are good and plentiful. Great seafood bbq on a Tuesday night, huge prawns and great fresh fish displyed in a fishing boat full of ice on the beach & cooked to order.
The massages at the spa are great and really good value for money. We would definitely go back especially since I've seen they've opened new bungalows too.
If you want something a little different with a lot of Thai charm this resort is a lovely romantic place to chill out.

We stayed here for three nights during our trip to Ko Lanta and it was a very wonderful memory. The room was so beautifully decorated and the staff are great help. The hub style and the outdoor bathroom are really romantic. We can actually get the view of the sea from the window, and the beach was only steps away. Not a lot of choice of breakfast, but it was ok. The location was great, very nearby to the town where you can find most travel agents and restaurants.

Room Tip: There's dining tables and bar between bungalows and the beach, so only little difference between...

Bungalow was traditional bamboo style hut with an private outdoor bathroom, very romantic and pretty. Some people may not like the outdoor bathroom and the hut style, our recommendation to them is to go and stay at a hotel on the mainland instead.
We stayed in low season and there were not many people around the island or resort, so the pool and jacuzzis were not open.
There is a bar/restaurant right on the beach, great the watch the sun go down.
Resort is at the end of the beach so not as busy and happening as at the centre of the beach, but is only a short, lovely walk along the sand to more action

We stayed two weeks on Ancient Realm with three children and had the best of times! I feel all warm in my heart when thinking back of those two weeks.

We stayed in one of the standard Bungalows with two baby cots and a mattress for the bigger boy. It was a bit cramped but ok! We were (of course :-) advised another, bigger, bungalow to fit us all, but we preferred this one. It felt snug! Wooden floors, dimly lit lamps, some chinese/thai decorations and a coffee-maker.

The bathroom was outdoors, although only the shower was under the sky.. It was not new, but well kept and we found it nice. Since plumbing seems to be a common problem in all Thailand/Malaysia this was not an exception but nothing to feel upset about. This is Thailand..

The Bungalow had a cosy well kept fenced garden with a hammock and a table that also contributed to the feeling of "home".

Suki, the owner, and her staff (well - most of them) are so friendly you feel they'd tried to take down the moon if you just gave them a hint you'd like it. Suki gives a very professional impression from the start. She responds quickly to all mail, questions and reservation details before arrival and when you finally arrive at her (and her fiancé's) resort, she'd do anything to make your stay as good as ever possible! She is fun, efficient and very considerate. Nothing is impossible for her to arrange! Our little girl got stung by mosquitoes and swosch - Suki just noticed and came to us after a couple of hours with a paste to put on. We didn't ask for it, but that is the service you get at this place. You feel special and well taken care of!

The barmaid Oi is one of the most friendly persons we ever met at a hotel. Our big boy still talks about her and calls Ancient Realm "Oi's place". All three children and all three adults loved her!

The place itself is cosy. That is the best word. It has got a bit of "living room"-feeling over it all and you feel at home. If you expect luxury, white linen napkins or spotless bathrooms with all amenities you should aim for another place. But if you prefer a relaxed atmosphere, friendly and calm people around you, a cosy bungalow with a bit of an oriental and personal touch, a beachbar with terriffic food and drinks accompanied by the ocean while you feel the sand between your toes this is definitely the place to go!

We all loved it!

We didn't have high expectations of the AR because it was so cheap. We expected a laid back, very small and quiet resort and that is exactly what we got.
Our sea view bungalow was lovely, it was very clean, the bed was comfortable and there where lots of thoughtful extras that you would not expect given the cost such as torches, umbrellas and international plug sockets. All of the bungalows have a small garden around them with a table and chairs and lovely plants. The staff where excellent, they attended to our every need and were polite and friendly. Breakfast was fine, not great, but certainly adequate.
Our hosts, Clinton and Suki were fantastic, great fun, full of useful information and super company for late night drinking in the bar! The location was great, short walk to a 7-11, 10 minute tuk tuk ride to the town with banks, shops etc. We hired motor bikes from the AR which is something we would never ordinarily do given that driving in Thailand is crazy and we are quite old and sensible but on Lanta there is not much traffic, the roads are safe and a bike is the best way to discover this beautiful small island.
The beach was nice, great for swimming, a few rocks but you can avoid them and swim safely. The beach does get really dirty with things washed up from other islands, the AR staff are out there cleaning up twice a day.
One word of warning, Lanta has lots of snakes and I was unfortunate enough to encounter a cobra that I almost stepped on in my bungalow garden. Whilst this is no reflection on the resort, ( they quickly dealt with it) I have heard from many other visitors to Lanta that there are a lot of snakes and you may see them!!!
Overall, we had a great stay at the AR and we would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: The resort have double sized family bungalows if needed.
