“Good place to stay”
Reviewed March 15, 2013 via mobile

This one has good cottages. They are clean and functional. Great for families. The pool is big enough for kids to play. Restaurant offers good food. The staff is nice and the owner is very helpful. Overall the place is nice.

I've stayed at the Golden Bay following some friends advice and i can confirm they were so right.
I have to admit that upon my arrival I was a little underwhelmed but by thebfollowing morning i begun to see how beautiful the area was.
I had one of the standard bungalow at the back of the resort, 1 minute walk to the pool, 2 min to the beach.
Nothing too fancy within the bungalow, on the basic side but very clean and confortable i must say. It also got cleaned by the nice ladies every morning.
The staff that basically worked everywhere from reception to restaurant were outstanding, always there to ensure i had what i wanted BUT NEVER INTRUSIVE. Real lovely food, particularly fishes for dinner.
The resort also provides scooters and Koh Lanta is perfect to visit by this; i' ve rented ine for the duration and thats to this i discovered my perfect Thai Beach ( nui beach).
I genuenly felt like being at home away from home and met some lovely people in the resort.
The con: the swimming pool tend to get over crowded with family with children so i always only used it after breakfast before hitting the road. Nevertheless that did not really bother me because why would you stay by the pool when you have the Andaman Sea?
Overall i great expericence and should i visit Koh Lanta again I would def stay here!

The location of this hotel suited us perfectly – 2 min ride from Saladan Pier/town, with its shops, restaurants and bars, and situated on the beautiful soft, sandy beach of Klong Dao. There is a nice laidback feel to the place as you arrive and certainly we were made to feel very welcome.

Other reviewers have mentioned the lack of nightlife at the resort and on the beach nearby and that is a fact. The hotel restaurant kitchen shuts at 9.30pm and from then on the staff is really waiting for you to go so they can turn off the lights at 10pm. And if you don't go, they turn the lights off anyway!

As we walked along the beach, this seemed to be true of the other resorts – most people dine early - but we found one restaurant, with BBQ, chairs and tables actually on the sand, which seemed happy to stay open whilst you stayed on . . . out of the hotel onto the beach and 2 -3 places along on the left. If you go back on to the main road you will do better – or take the ride back into Saladan. That said, we enjoyed some tasty baguettes, burgers and sandwiches at lunch time at Golden Bay’s restaurant, the cocktails were good and the setting is perfect – right on the edge of the beach. We did have the BBQ one night, but that wasn’t such a success. Breakfast was pretty good if lacking in variety, with eggs cooked to order and bacon and sautéed potatoes available, along with some Thai dishes.

We stayed in one of the five Superior Cottages, which are at the back of the garden, overlooking the pool down towards the beach and sea. All had a nice view except No 101 which is set behind a large tree and lots of foliage, making it dark as well as encouraging the mozzies – and right next to the car park. From what we could see, the other rooms overlooking the pool and down to the beach were the recently refurbished Deluxe Cottages and the rows behind were the Standard Cottages.

The Superiors are a reasonable size but the wooden furniture looks tired. There was a small dressing table and stool (with one of the only 2 power points available handily placed by the mirror), what might have been a suitcase unit, but was too small for ours, so was used as shelving, a tv (couple of English-speaking channels) over a fridge and small cupboard and one of the hardest beds we’ve ever slept in! Pillows ditto. 2 good-sized windows where the yellowy-gold blinds looked new and did a good job of blacking out the room.

The bathroom was a disappointment – wet room effect where the entire floor, toilet and bin get soaked every time you take a shower. The water is heated via a wall-mounted electric heater and was generally warm, but not hot enough for us, and the water pressure was weak. Floor and wall grout is in need of attention and the sink, well . . . no hot water for starters.

There is a daily maid service, usually lasting about 5 minutes, including making the beds.

No hairdryer in the room, no hand towels (just 2 bath towels and beach towels that are changed daily) and no small hand soap supplied. There are wall-mounted soap and shampoo dispensers next to the shower, but that is pretty inconvenient for washing your hands over at the sink – particularly when the floor is soaking wet and slippery – and the soap dispenser didn’t work anyway. We were pleased to have our own supplies with us. Guess these things are to be expected at the great value prices being charged for an hotel in a prime location, but really, is the saving worth it? If it weren't for these kinds of details, we'd have given the hotel an "Excellent" rating, rather than a "Very good".

We hired scooters (250 THB each from the hotel at the time of writing) and enjoyed the quieter roads we took on the way to the mangrove area, as well as down to Lanta Old Town, both on the east of the island,

We also drove down the main road to the southern-most point of the island and enjoyed a drink stop off at Diamond Cliff – fabulous views and good menu – plus some snacks and drinks at Bamboo Beach, which advertises itself as “the last beach with sunloungers before you reach the National Park” – which is yet another beautifully natural beach and with rocks for interest as the tide goes out.

All in all, Golden Bay suited us. The owners and staff were very friendly, nothing is too much trouble and we had fun trying to get vodka and tonics the way we wanted them. It rained most of the time we were on Koh Lanta, but that didn’t spoil it for us, we’d go back in a trice and Golden Bay Cottages would be the place where we'd want to stay,

Room Tip: Worth upgrading to a Superior from a Standard Cottage. Didn't see inside a Deluxe one so can...

Nice place to stay,

good AC bungalow, quiet, good service.
Nice beach, not to far out of the village with the main pier, so good restaurants within 10 min. walk.

Rent a motorbike for 200 baht/day and cruise around the island.
Price was fair, 800 with breakfast.
breakfast was ok, better than thai standart, but not comparable to European/English breakfast.
If you get borred of it, there's a german bakery on the main road, 5 min. by foot.

My boyfriend and i did a quick thailand trip from Canada, we stayed on 3 islands and Ko Lanta was by far our favorite. Golden bay seemed to have a spot for everyone, retired travelers, families, and young couples seeking relaxation. this is not a party place. The couple that run the hotel were tremendous. They help with everything activties etc. We felt welcome there and ate at the restaurant often as the food was soooo good!!! Great place to walk the beach day or evening and the pool is perfect for relaxing. We had an ac room that was good for what we payed for standard for thailand in the moderate price range!
Would stay again if we can make it back!

Nice resort, especially if you are a Swedish family!

Pros:

Nice beach - great for tanning and swimming
Decent rooms with daily maid service
Great food at beachfront restaurant
No vendors on the beach
If you want to stay at Khlong Dao this has pretty much the best beach on the strip

Cons:

The entire place is FILLED with Swedish families. Each seem to have multiple toddlers and young children. It is impossible to get any peace and quiet. The pool and beach is packed with children. It might just be Khlong Dao itself as the whole beach seems to be this way. Also our stay was early in January so this may be more than usual due to schools being out in Sweden, who knows.

The beach it is on has virtually no night life, other than families pushing strollers in the sand and kids launching lanterns on the beach. Not a place to stay if you want any other type of entertainment within walking distance.

The food is a bit pricey here as are the drinks, but good quality.

The bathroom in our cottage was strange. The entire bathroom was the shower and everything in there gets soaked when you take a shower (toilet, etc.)

The entire resort is asleep by 10:00 PM, there isn't even a bar or restaurant open later than that. All the lights are off and it looks like a ghost town. The lighting on the property could be better also as we were in the third row of cottages and the porch lights don't stay on when you remove your key from the electrical switch in the room. Made it difficult to navigate to and from our room.

Overall I think this is a great place for a family vacation, but young couples or backpackers seeking a romantic or fun place to stay should look elsewhere, maybe even to a different beach like Prae Ae Beach. Koh Lanta itself is charming though. Nice slow pace. Rent a scooter and explore.
