Owner description: Lanta Old Town is a small village on Ko Lanta's East Coast in Krabi Province. Many years ago, Ko Lanta's Old Town acted as the port and commercial center for the island and provided safe harbor for Arabic and Chinese trading vessels sailing between the larger ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today, Old Town is the district capital; it has a post office, police station, Buddhist temple, Chinese temple and the island's hospital as well as a long pier.

“A must when on Lanta”
Reviewed December 14, 2013

Drove out to the old town on a scooter, was well worth the ride.

Still unspoiled, you can see what life is all about for the locals. There are some touristy aspects of course but, that can be expected when the local economy depends so heavily on tourism.

Lots of great little restaurants with a peaceful view of the water.

“Very small, nice to see, some good food.”

It seems like old town really needs a little bit of a facelift. There are some nicely preserved areas but the tatty areas surrounding them take away from the quaint little town feel i was expecting. Most of the shops are selling the same old tat that they sell everywhere else except a few.

The restaurants mostly have little areas to eat overlooking the sea and other islands but unless the tide is in all you are sitting around is muddy area with lots and lots of rubbish from the sea that no one seems to notice or bother cleaning!

The town has a relaxed vibe, about a dozen or a little less restaurants, 2 atms and a couple of places to stay. The ferry port is right there also which makes it something you will most probably see if you dont want to hire a scooter and get out and explore it on one of your days relaxing!

“Nice people”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

My bf and I spent about a week on Koh Lanta and really enjoyed visiting Old Town. There are some great restaurants that have back balconies over looking the water and the people were super mellow. I enjoyed doing some shopping because folks seemed more willing to help me practice saying my numbers than other places I had shopped in Thailand. I also scored some really good deals, the prices were comparable here, during the off-season at least, to shopping in Chiang Mai (which everyone says is the cheapest in Thailand for souvenirs).

In particular, I was blown away by one small restaurant, Apsara. We ran under their awning to shelter from a quick rain storm and ended up staying for drinks. When the rain let up, the waiter (owner's son who studied English at University in Bangkok and was incredibly fluent) asked us if we wanted to have a bite to eat out back on their patio. We said sure and ordered a whole fish. I was tired of eating fried food so when I saw that they had a menu item for steamed fish with lime sauce - I couldn't resist. We watched the sunset on this beautiful balcony and enjoyed a delicious dish. I think, honestly, it was the most romantic dinner we'd ever had after four years of some really great dates. It was just magical.

So if you like just meandering around and talking to people, Old Town is really nice.
