“Fisherman's Cottage is still the best place to stay in Thailand”
Reviewed January 13, 2011

I've just spent another two weeks at Fisherman's Cottage, having stayed there a few times before (see previous review: "This is the best place to stay in Thailand, not just Ko Lanta") and I am happy to report that a move 50m down the beach to a slightly smaller property has not changed anything about Fishermans' at all.

True to his style, Kun has reduced the number of bungalows from 11 to 9 on this new site to make sure everyone has there own space, which is increasingly rare as some of Thailand's beaches become more and more crammed with bungalows. One of the nicest additions to the new bungalows is that each now has a small garden in the bathroom, so you can have a 'garden shower', which is a truly unique experience.

The food is still amazing (and still lovingly prepared by the always smiling chefs A and Lam). The sunsets are just as beautiful. And, most importantly, the the staff are just as welcoming and friendly .

I highly recommend staying at Fisherman's.

PS - At least a couple of times on the way to Fisherman's I have been told that it has closed by other tour agencies hoping to trick me into staying with them instead of at Fisherman's ...luckily I had just emailed Kun and knew that they were open the first time this happened to me and did not fall prey to this scam, but I hate to think of how many other people have...so, watch out for this and if you're in doubt, call ahead.

We had a wonderful stay at Fisherman's! The bungalows were great, the beach and the views were perfect (especially at sunset, when little fishing boats are returning home and you can see them on the horizon) and we have to give special credits to the staff and the food they prepared. It was great!!! They made something different every evening and so we got an inside on thai specialties. The best thing was that we could look into the kitchen (it had a big window on the restaurant) or even go in... so there was no need to do the cooking classes :))
They also provided motto-bikes for rent, a day trip for snorkeling and were really great helping us planning the rest of our trip (hotel recommendation in Surat Thani and even a great restaurant there). Their price for this services were fair. Great value for money!

If we would return to Ko Lanta we would definitely stay at Fisherman's cottage!

I first stayed at Fisherman's 10 years ago and have been back nearly every year since.
Last season was sadly their last at their original location...and so this year they have rented new land and rebuilt just 2 minutes along the beach.
The new Fisherman's looks a little different, but thankfully everything I loved about it is still the same (perfect example of same same but different!). The bungalows are spacious, clean and stylish. The food is great. The friendly service is brilliant. Oh and the view just never changes....what a sunset.
It's a place that attracts a nice friendly mixed crowd....independents, couples, families.
Yes I'm sure there are cheaper bungalows along the beach, but I'd always spend the extra few pounds to stay here.
If you want somewhere chilled, beautiful and comfortable then go to Fisherman's.

Positives first: the bungalows are absolutely g
special. Lots of room, beautifully presented with a huge open air bathroom. Staff: fantastic and very friendly, courteous and helpful.
Negatives: was very noisy at night time. Loud music from the bar and the tv was on until all hours of the morng. However a bungalow further back may have been quieter. I thought it was pricey at 1000 baht a night. I know down the road a bit there were bungalows for 800 baht with aircon and hot water. Having said that, I dont think there are any other bungalows with the same design as Fishermans, and I adored the bathroom.

Me and my girlfriend stayed 4 weeks in Thailand in Febr. and March of 2010.
We were in 11 different guesthouses in the south of Thailand but what we found in fishermans cottage was like being home.Khun and his stuff are soooooooo friendly and we had a lot of fun. I dont know exactly how long we stayed because it was so nice and we had a lazy time doing nothing.
Thanks a lot guys you are amazing!!!
hope to see you all next year!!!!!

travelled with my husband and our 2 friends. Had a cottage each - both extremely romantic in a sort of effortless cool way. The owners - two very relaxed smart guys from Bankok, cooked for us, made the cocktails, arranged New Year's dinner, made our breakfast and said - "just pay later"... After 5 days of this we felt a bit worried and asked to pay... he he... cheapest ever, and we happily continued the smart arrangement! Everything from the music, to the food to the cool "concrete on the sand restaurant" just made the whole week fantastic, and the fact that there are only 12 cottages is excellent.
I would absolutely go again! ( and we will)

We stayed at Fisherman's Cottage having read the recent great reviews on TripAdvisor believing it to be a good value choice in a fantastic location.

When we arrived, our welcome was friendly and our first impressions were positive. The bungalow, as promised, was just seconds from the beach with truly awesome views. The interior of the bungalows were quirky and we liked the outdoor bathroom despite the cold shower (you get used to this in SE Asia). The bed looked comfy although there were some weird stains on the sheet. The mosquito net was in good shape and the fan was good.

The outside of the bungalow had a table, chair and hammock, as promised and again, afforded some truly wonderful views of the beach and sea in front.

The bar and restaurant area looked charming and the food was good and the prices for this and the drinks were in line with everywhere else in the area.

However, we had a friend arrive in Koh Lanta on the same day who was able to get a bungalow for just 350 Baht (450 baht less than we were paying for Fisherman's). Granted, it didn't have the same charm and appeal but was the same distance from the beach and this got us thinking that perhaps we were paying too much. We did ask if one of the cheaper bungalows became available if we could move and there was one that looked empty on our second day but we weren't offered a move until we'd already told them we were checking out.

Our 2 night stay was enjoyable but it was tarnished by a feeling of paying more than was required (I'd recommend going for one of the cheaper 600 baht rooms especially as they are further from the noise of the restaurant and bar and still afford great views) and also by the over-friendly and over-familiar approach of some of the members of staff. We never felt comfortable sitting at the bar tables or having a quiet moment because each time we ventured out of the bungalow we ended up having to have conversations with staff which just seemed a little too long and felt uncomfortable.

I know that this probably sounds like a really silly complaint and that if they had been completely unfriendly that things would have been worse but sometimes when you're in an island paradise you just want to be left alone to think about life and enjoy the view and at Fisherman's this just didn't happen for us.

That said, it's a beautiful place on a gorgeous spot of beach with a lot of charm and much to recommend it. If, like us, you like quiet time just set the boundaries early and sit back and relax.
