“Pool so dirty there were crabs in in it! Disgusting!”
Reviewed May 24, 2009

We were really looking forward to a nice relaxing break at the gorgeous looking Palace Lanta Resort after drooling over the paradise-like images of the clear blue swimming pool on the beach and after getting a great deal on a 5 night stay we thought we couldn't go wrong....How wrong we were! We arrived at the hotel and checked in to a somewhat frosty and 'I can't really be bothered to deal with you' welcome. Our bags were taken to our bungalow, which was 5 rows of bungalows back from the beach (even though there was only one other couple staying at the hotel at the time).

The bungalows are pretty grotty looking from the outside - however much nicer inside, which is the only thing which made our stay here bearable! They are big and spacious and very clean. The bed is the biggest we have stayed in yet and you get a fridge, tea and coffee and TV with satellite channels - including a great film channel (thankfully!).

The bathroom was less spectacular and the shower was pretty rubbish. There were also orange stains on the shower where the water had leaked which was strange because after we had laid on the white sheets on the bed after a shower, we would leave orange marks?! Not sure what's in the water there!

You have a front porch where you can sit if you like - however the overhanging jungle of plants and dampness meant there were swarms of bugs and mozzies and we had many unwelcome guests in the bedroom.

We decided to take a stroll to the beach, only a minute away, the first thing that struck us was the pool - IT WAS DARK GREEN! You couldn't see the bottom it was so dirty there were crabs in it and brown scum floating on the water - disgusting! We didn't even want to sunbathe next to it because of the mozzies and because it looked so horrible - a world away from the beachside paradise we were expecting from the photos.

The area was way too quiet, nothing going on, no people, no tourists, no nightlife - nothing - very disappointed. The only saving grace was Auntie Maes cafe at the end of the drive to the hotel, part of the swanky resort next door which does the BEST sandwiches we've ever had and between 8-10pm they do 50% off all cakes and pastries....yum yum!

Anyway, we escaped from the ghost-town that is Ko Lanta and I don't think we'll be back.

This is a brother hotel of much more expensive Lanta Palace which seemed to be nice beach resort. Palace Hill is not only located across the street from the Palace but also really on the hill, which is really frustrating because of the 350 meters climb on the stinky village road. Once you reach the point you have to actually go down to get to the Hill resort which is placed in some kind of valley...It`s really frustrating.Bungalows looked new, very simply furnished, clean though. It`s far from bars, shops and the beach.I think you can find a better location for the same money.
On the other side, if you look for extremely quiet place located walking distance from the attractions, that can be your choice.

In a word - awful! Our room was unable to power a hot shower for more than 2 seconds without causing the entire power supply to trip. We asked the receptionist to fix it but he just showed us how to reset the trip switch rather than move us to another room - with a working shower. Basically, if we wanted a shower we'd have to have a freezing cold showere without lights and constantly re-set the trip switch.

We also didn't have any soap in the bathroom but when we asked for some were instead given bath foam to use. We were also supplied with a camp bed which was bent and uncomfortable.

The hotel has an orchid farm which although means lots of very pretty orchids, also means you will be eaten alive by mosquitoes. The hotel keeps a monkey in a cage for the 'enjoyment' of the visitors but to us this looked very cruel.

The beach is pretty and unspoilt (beware of the jellyfish) but the hotel is in the middle of nowhere and is surrounded by empty apartments. However, there is a nearby restaurant called Pad Thai which was great and fortunately some of the local travel operators are really good.

The hotel was the worst I've encountered in Thailand and to add insult to injury they charged us for the 'complimentary' water. The fridge in our room had a sticker on it which said that we were entitled to 2 bottles of free water. However, it turns out that the free water wasn't in the fridge but elsewhere. The staff admitted it was confusing and that previous visitors had complained but refused to refund us our money for the drinks.

Awful, awful, awful - avoid if at all possible.

When a place/resort/hotel do good advertising they have to deliver a good experience. This place has the worst people working there...
1. Had a drink at the bar in the evening, we paid the waitress, and the bartender came after to ask us to pay! we told him we payed to the waitress., he said ok. The next day the manager came and ask us for same damn money. This is called bad service.
2. when we checked out, we showed them the voucher, showing the rate we were going to pay. He said its wrong, and gave a other rate. 4 times the price confirmed earlier.
we had a big discussion ending up he charged us for the rate he said. I deny signing the papers, and told him that we never agreed. but we had to go to the ferry...

We got our money back, 6 months later, after my bank did a great job running a case against this people!

Ko lanta is a nice island. DOnt go to this place to sleep... to far from center of ko lanta, dirty, slow service and bad food....

This place is an absolute [--] hole. We stayed one night and cancelled the rest as it was so bad. It was too dangerous to leave the so called hotel. It was way too expensive for what it was... the accomodation was unclean, the shower had fungus all over it as well as a home for horrid insects. The pool was horrid and even discoloured my swimsuit. The food was average and expensive..

Do not book through Tourism Authority of Thailand AKA T.A.T.. you would think such a place would give you the best value for money but in fact, they completely ripped us off and charged us double! They are rude and when cancelling the rest of our accommodation well in advance, they refused to give our money back.

All in all, Lanta so called Palace was a complete dump and is nothing like the advertisements that surrount Ko Lanta port!!!

We saw posters and advertisments all over the place for this resort so we thought we would give it a go. The room had a terrible smell in it that had been covered with air-freshiner. And if that wasn't bad enough, it was infested with mosquitoes - we must have killed a dozen but still there were one or two buzzing around all night. The small beach was rocky and over crowded which made it difficult to swim or enjoy and relax at all. The swimmig pool looked nothing like it's online photos. It was very small and again overcrowded - we never did use it. The restaurant (which is talked up in the local "Eat" guide as serving good vietnamese cuisine) was average, overpriced and not very vietnamese. After paying for the meal we waited for our change which never arrived. Breakfast - ugh. By now we had truely had enough, the breakfast was in an outdoor setting and was left uncovered. Neadless to say the eggs, ham and noodles were covered in flies. There was no coffee - just hot water and instant stuff. We conclude that this "resort" is certainly no "Palace". For the price we expected much more - and found it elsewhere on the island! We cut our stay short to just the one night. BEWARE!!!

My husband and I stayed at Lanta Palace fro 5 nights from New Years Eve. It took over 8 hours to get there from Bangkok. The flight to Krabi was the quickest part of the journey. We didn't realise it would take hours by minibus and on two car ferries to get to the island. It was worth the trip and we later found out that there is a boat service from Ao Nang. The hotel put on a dinner for New Years Eve but all the hot food was pretty cold. There was also entertainment and games for the children. We were the only Australians there, most people were Scandanavian and lots had children. The bungalows were not fancy but were clean and comfortable with a handy drying are at the rear to hang out swimming things. The airconditioner worked well so the room was nice and cool for sleeping. The pool is lovely and overlooks the beach which is clean and also good for swimming. There are plenty of sun lounges, umbrellas and chairs. Breakfast was a disappointment as the food wasn't kept warm enough and eggs weren't cooked fresh when ordered as most hotels do but the restaurant overlooked the beach and pool and was very pleasant. We found lots of very cheap and tasty places out on the street for our lunch and dinner and didn't bother with the hotel for eating as it was more expensive than the local places. The resort is 20 minutes drive from the main town of Saladan but the hotel had a free shuttle twice a day. Internet is available at the hotel but is half the price across the road. It is also cheap to have your laundry done out in the street. We had a really great time at Lanta Palace and would recommend it to other people who just want to relax, sunbake and swim as long as you aren't too fussy about cold food for breakfast. The staff were friendly and helpful and we had a great time.

  • Liked — The location right on the beach, the pool being right there too and the abundance of sun lounges.
  • Disliked — The cold breakfast food that should have been hot.
