Very helpful staff, very peaceful stay

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jan 23, 2013
We stayed in Southern Lanta Resort in January 2013 for three days. The facility is very easy to find with tuk tuk, close to the boat station. The staff is very kind and helpful. Especially the lady at the reception answered kindly all of our questions and made reservations for us. She booked the boat trips and taxis etc, which made out trip much easier. The rooms are OK, they are not luxurious, but adequate and very clean. The facility is almost like in a rain forest, there are different kinds of trees, flowers everywhere. Also there were lovely cats and two dogs. The restaurant inside is almost on the beach, food is delicious, prices are average. Music is fantastic. We were there I guess Friday or Saturday night, there was a very good singer and guitar player duo. Southern Lanta is on Long Beach, the sea is so calm and clean, the beach is excellent. The guests of Southern Lanta are mostly Swedish families with children, so if you are planning to have vacation with your family, this is a perfect place. We really enjoyed our stay there.

We stayed here for 5 nights over the xmas period.

There are two types of chalets, what I can only describe is very basic, quite dated chalets and the superior more modern chalets. As soon as I saw the basic (mosquito infested) room, I requested if we could upgrade to a better room but unfortunately it was fully booked so we had to stay put. The manager did source some mosquito rings and after requesting we got a kettle left in our room (apparently kettles are only available in superior rooms!?)

The positives:
- Great location - nestled beside a beautiful 2km stretch of white sandy beach
- Very Family friendly hotel
- Friendly staff

The hotel is a little dated and could be doing with some modernisation around the main reception & pool areas.

Of the 5 hotels we stay in during our stay in Thailand, this was the only hotel that charged for internet. Upon arrival,we received one hour free access but had to pay for the rest. Connection was unreliable so we found it easier to go to a bar/cafe nearby with free wifi when we required internet access.

Room tip: My advice for anyone looking to stay here is pay for the superior room if you are after a comfortable, pleasant stay!

Overall we had a good stay. If you are not afraid of Swedish people (a lot of them in them hotel as on Lanta in general. :-)

Though, if you compare the rate if the room to elsewhere on the islands, e.g. phangang, then it is 1000 per night to much.

We states in the superior garden view and beach view. In both rooms, the word 'superior' did not occur to me. Especially the quality of the bed including its linnen and the shower is bad.

The hotel is nicely located right at the beach and has a nice bar at the beach as well.
The staff is very friendly as well!

We stayed at Southern Lanta resort in early December of 2012. The resort itself was picture perfect - lush and green with cute cabins and located right on a very nice beach.

The rooms were lovely, with a double bed, very good air conditioning, a spacious balcony equipped with table and chairs, a shower (weak jet, but did the job), toilet, basin, television, safe, dressing table and cupboard. Although the room appeared to be very clean and hygenic, we awoke with some bites on our legs - possibly bedbugs - but we're not 100% sure.

The staff were very helpful and went out of their way to ensure our stay was as comfortable as possible.

The buffet breakfast was very nice, with lots of variety (although the menu did not change substantially day-to-day). This included omelettes which were made for each customer on the spot to the customer's specifications, in addition to toast, cereal, various meats (bacon, sausages and ham), other types of egg, either fried rice or fried noodle depending on the day, fruit, baked beans and pancakes. Juice and coffee was also available.

In general, food from the hotel's restaurant is fantastic, although not as cheap as other places in the town.

Each booking receives 1 hour of free internet, but these facilities were slow and often unreliable. Travelers would do better using computers at one of the internet cafes in the town.

We noticed that the main type of client at this hotel was families with young children (mainly from Scandanavia). A great resort for families, as it is equipped with two pools, tennis courts and a gym, and is very quiet, peaceful and safe.

Overall a fabulous resort - highly recommended!

We stayed here for 14 nights in November 2012, the resort itself is quite nice and the value for money is decent.

The good stuff:
The location is great, only a minute walk down to the beach and the view from the beach front restaurant is really great.
A couple of minutes walk the other direction and you are on the main street with a lot of shops and restaurants.
The beach is nice and child friendly.
The resort is big and it never felt over crowded.
There are a lot of families with younger children and a lot of Swedish families.
Small playground close to the restaurants and the main pool (beware of dog "piles" though, see below).
Hotel restaurant is quite alright.
Cleaning was ok.

There are a few setbacks though:
The main pool was a bit dirty, nothing major and it sill felt quite safe to use it although some families told us that their kids got an ear infection from the pool.
Breakfast buffet was not the best I've had and it was kind of limited but it was included in the price which was nice.
Water preassure in the shower was terrible.
The cleaning staff only provided one roll of toilet paper (we stayed two adults and one 3 year old in the bungalow) every day and we had to ask for new ones several times.
Toilet amenities such as soap and shampoo was not refilled every day so we ended up buying our own soap and shampoo.
There are many dogs around so you better watch your steps so you do not step into one of their "piles", there were quite a few of them around.

A few tips:
There is a laundry service (travel agency office) located to the left just when you hit the main street which is really good and cheap.
May's Restaurant (very close to the laundry service/travel office) had great food, friendly staff and great service. We ate there several times and we were never disappointed.
Picasso (down on the beach, 5 minutes walk to the left/south) was really good with friendly staff and grest service.
The second pool just outside the resortsl "entrance" was much cleaner and never crowded (except when the kids from the swedish school nearby came to visit) and we used that one quire a lot. Not many chair around though so if you would like to sit down and read by the pool be prepared to sit on the ground.
Speaking of sun beds, be prepared to get up early to get one as guests are "reserving" sun beds with their towels early in the morning. I saw several beds that were not actually used for hours but still had towels on them.

Good points -

The resort has the best location on the island. Perfect for families who want to lounge on the beach. There are plenty of restaurants on the beach and close by. The staff is very friendly and goes out of their way to serve you better. The in house massage centre is an absolute delight. Its better than all the others around. The rooms are clean and serviced daily to perfection. There are 2 swimming pools. One around the breakfast area which is shallow n used mostly by kids and the other one by the fitness centre for people who want to swim laps. We stayed at cottage no C-01 which was just next to the beach. The resort has a lot of families staying there and hence very kids friendly. There is free wifi everywhere on the resort. The reception books all kinds of tours and transfers at a decent competitive price. Lots of cheap options right outside the resort for laundary. There is a bank also at the entrance for money exchanging needs. Tuks Tuks are easily available for 40 bhats on the main road for saladan market

Things that could have been better

The breakfast buffet was limited and dint have many options
The shower and the bathroom sanitary wear need replacement
There was a power failure one night for about half hour when A/c was switched off but seems to be just a one off case
The fitness centre is on chargable basis

All in in a great place to stay for the tariff. Would highly recommend to everyone
