Layana Resort and Spa
Ranked #1 of 84 Hotels in Ko Lanta
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 30, 2007

We have just came back from Layana. We stayed at Ocean 1 and enjoyed the stay. The hotel is small but with a very well kept territory. The weather was rainy for 5 days (no surprise given the rain season), then we had a week of sunny weather and quite sea. The hotel was making some construction works, but everything was handled very professionally (we were informed, given various frebees and discounts further to already very reasonable prices) and we did not care of some noise. The construction is going to finish some time soon in the autumn and they are going to open a renewed restaurant. The highlights:

- Food/bar -- There is a Swiss guy Daniel (ex-Blue Lagoon in Samui) in charge of the restaurant/bar service and Chef Felix in charge of the kitchen. We liked the food and service and there was not a single dish that we would not like to order for the second (or third) time.

- Accomodation -- in our opinion the best places to stay are Ocean 1 and 2 and Beach 2. Beach 1 is very close to the fence bordering the territory with some very strange locals living just accross the fence. Beach 3 and Ocean 3 are standing very close to the pool where most of the people spend their time and the privacy is hard to get. There are two floors in Ocean 1 with a nice terrace on the second floor with a good view. The suite is well kept and clean.

- Management -- the owners ara South African couple Bob and Margie and they are very pleasant and look after their guests, always available to speak if there is any need.

- SPA -- I would never thought that I will enjoy spa so much that I would actually survive through so many treatments we had at Layana (rainy season obviously helped))) The design of the spa is much simplier than in some other spas we have been to, but the specialists who work there try hard and we liked it a lot.

Things to know:

- If you come there in a low season beware of the ferries between the islands. You will have to use them twice in order to get to Koh Lanta from Krabi Airport and the service is very very very unreliable. On the way back to the airport we left the hotel 4 hours before the flight and only due to the great driver (who broke all the rules, but did it very professionally) we could make it 10 min before the departure! On a high season Layana uses the boat to get its guests to the hotel to avoid the hussle with the ferries.

- there is some litter on the beach, which comes with the rough sea, but the hotel cleans the beach in front of it. Otherwise the beach and sand are very good.

- Koh Lanta is still quiet in comparison with some other destinations in Thailand, with not a lot of things to see or do (children may be bored). If you want to enjoy your privacy this is the place to go, but do not expect a choice of entertainment/places to see as you could find on Samui, for example. And thats exactly why we liked Koh Lanta so much))

I apologise in advance for the long review but I feel I really must return Tripadvisor and it's followers (as well as the Layana) the favour of helping us to select this top notch resort.

We stayed for 5 nights in August. Low season with warm rain most days but only sporadically and certainly did not dampen our trip. Definately worth the opportunity to get low season prices and the intimate feeling of almost having the resort to ourselves.

My husband and I had not been overseas for many years due to children, work etc so were grateful for the reviews provided on TripAdvisor to select a destination. We were in desperate need of somewhere to sit and chill and we got even more than we imagined.

We booked with the hotel direct via e-mail and were pleased when the hotel was able to offer us a better rate which we had found on aisiarooms.com The booking went seamlessly and promptly.

The resort was a little out of the way for us coming from Western Australia but if you are looking for true peace and relaxation, then definately worth the travel. The resort is approx 2.5 hours drive in a luxurious minivan from Krabi airport, where we were met by a Layana rep as soon as we exited the airport doors. The drive itself is interesting for the scenery and the 2 ferry crossings.

We arrived to be greeted with warm towels and cool iced tea and were welcomed personally by the hotel owners. A golf cart took us to our room where we were briefly shown the functions of the beautifully appointed Beach Suite. Even though we had not requested it, our room was set up like a honeymoon suite with flowers on the bed and in the bath and a bottle of champagne on ice with chocolates. This was such a loevely suprise after the trip and sent us into relaxation mode straight away.

The room was huge with a lovely bathroom with both indoor and outdoor shower. The bath was only big enough for two at a squeeze, but certainly fine for one. The outdoor shower was great, and all very private.

The bed was in the middle of the room with an amazing view over the ocean. It was comfortable and there was plenty of storage (something I tend to look for). Beyond the bed was a daybed and a chaise with footstool from where you could watch TV or DVDs from the extensive hotel library. Or just look out to the ocean. Beyond the huge sliding glass doors was a porch where we spent a lot of our time on the deck chairs provided, reading and soaking up the peace and the osund of the waves craching on the shore.

We were in BS2 and found this to be the most private along with BS1 (there are only three beachsuites and BS3 is also lovely but closer to the pool).
We looked over the Ocean Deluxe Suites, but to be honest for the pice difference, we found them less private (as beach suite guests walk past your bedroom door to get to many of the hotel facilities) and are set further back from the ocean, so the best views are from upstairs. If you are looking at a garden room I would recommend the block which is closest to the pool and have pool and/or ocean views (number 37 & 38 upstairs and 35 & 36 downstairs). They seem to be angled slightly better than the others. We did not get a chance to look through tme but spoke to an English couple who were staying in one and said they were very well laid out. Main difference to the BS was obviously the view and location and slightly less space and no outdoor shower. The couple also commented that they had an orchestra of frogs some nights due to the rain.

I cannot recommend the spa and its georgeous staff enough. I spent a total of 7 hours during our stay there in the spa and enjoyed every single minute of it. They are very professional and extremely helpful when booking to ensure that you get the best treatment. Sooo relaxing!! I also found it exceptional value for money.
The library with free internet was very handy (especially with the occasional downpour).
The staff were very friendly, even providing us with some impromptu napkin folding lessons. The service was of a very high standard from housekeeping right through to spa and tour guides, with staff going out of their way to offer assistance, yet provide you with space. Some english could be improved, but certainly did not bother us.

They were actually renovating the resteraunt while we were there and they did all they could to keep interruptions to a minimum. It looks like it will be a great facilitiy when it is finished, and we did not feel disruppted at all.
The food in the resteraunt was excellent and reasonably priced. A great deal to choose from and room service was also great, although sometimes had trouble ordering on the phone in English. We ate most of our meals here or in our room as the food was so good and there really is not a lot around.
The lack of other resorts and facilities along the beach can be seen as either a positive or negative depending on what you are looking for. We took a tuk tuk into the main town for tea one evening. And also to the highly recommended Red Herring (great tapas). But as for bars/resteraunts on the same beach as Layana, there are none, well none that we could find. But this did mean I could walk on the beach sometimes without seeing a soul.

The pool was lovely, although I wonder if more pool beds were tucked away as the resort was only half full and on the days when the sun was out the pool beds were almost at their capacity. The way it has been designed with the vegetation etc, gives the pool beds a sense of privacy also.

There are a number of activities organised by the resort, but to be honest we only went on two. The Sunday markets which were interesting, and a tour around the island. Also good. But we were not really there to move too much.

The town of Saladan doesn't have a great deal to offer, so do not expect to be able to do much shopping at all here. We got next to nothing, actually purchasing some of the homewares from the resort instead (beautiful crockery).Certainly not the destination if you plan to shop till you drop but you can get the essentials.

I could go on and on, but really if you are looking for relaxation, romance, pampering, good food, and beautiful grounds then Layana is your place. Perfect for part or all of a honeymoon, or like us a second honeymoon. I just hope that we will be able to get back there one day. ENJOY!!

Four of us stayed at the Layanna for 2 weeks at the beginning of July. As it was low season there were only 20 or so guests there. It was like being in your own private villa!!
We enjoyed everything about the hotel: the service was exceptional, the food was good and the rooms were 5 star.
The presence of the owners Bob and Margie added a really nice personal touch to our stay and we would be more than happy to return in the near future.

Thank you Layana for one of the best holiday stays ever! Yes the glowing reviews are all true. The staff are fantastic! Special thanks to Daniel, Felix and all the food and beverage staff for making a birthday an extra special occassion. The food and service are spectacular throughout our 10 day stay. The resort is very laid back with most of our days spent by the pool, we were lucky with the low season weather. Bob, Margie and Michael are very personable and make sure that your every whim is catered for (even changing the satellite channels to watch the rugby). The facilities are 1st rate which included a beatuiful spa and comprehensive library. Also the little touches such as wine tastings, champagne on Sundays, daily fruit and chilled water were very much appreciated. We are looking forward to returning.

The right place to relax and doing nothing, just reading a book. I loved the space you feel on the property. All the small details which you can see on the resort. The large breakfast buffet is fabulous. The pool where you have the feeling of swimming out into the sea. Daniel and his team are doing a very good job! The sunset and the sea... Hope to come back once.
