“Relaxing at Layana”
Reviewed December 3, 2008

This was just such an amazing place to stay. Very calm, and it only rained one or two days during our stay, and only for about 1-2 hours.

The owners are amazingly gracious and are always having wonderful events. The leisure staff, including the super fun Mr. Bee, give perfect service when on one of the trips, or just lounging by the pool.

I feel Layana was the perfect balance between having enough activities to keep my wife busy, and myself relaxed and just enjoying the sun/beach.

Also, the restaurant is really, really good. The cooking class is fun, and make sure to order the Layana special sometime.

The only downside to the place is the local town of Saladan is so-so. Most of the shops sell tourist junk and there just doesn't feel like much local culture is represented there. The Saturday Market is better.

To wrap it up, everyone was super nice, the drivers are terrifying, and the beaches/forests/nature are nirvana inducing.

  • Liked — Location, the grounds are amazing. Great Service
  • Disliked — nothing, local town is boring.

It is a nice place to stay. I found some of the reviews exaggerated. Nice rooms, good service, very friendly and helpful staff, though it is kind of uncomfortable that they are always running around to serve you. But the menu was quiet limited and it gets really boring after couple of days and the sea was not that great either. Nothing wrong with the place but I could not say it is paradise or something...And not a lot to do when it is raining...

  • Liked — Quiet and comfortable place
  • Disliked — Limited variety of food

Just wanted to add my own experience of this wonderful hotel from my stay in 2007.

Wonderful hotel site, with spacious beautiful hotel rooms. The large grounds coupled with the proportionally low number of rooms really give a feeling of peace and tranquility.

Service is excellent.

There is one pool which is a good size and is never too congested! The hotel is right on the beach which is great. Only slight minus from my point of view is that the sea is not the best in Thailand - rougher and not as crystal clear as elsewhere.

In conclusion this is great value for money and will certainly return!

  • Liked — Tranquil atmosphere, brilliant service and lovely rooms
  • Disliked — Rough sea!

My Husband and I just arrived home from our two week honeymoon in Hong Kong and Thailand. We are from NYC and we like very nice things and have stayed in some nice hotels in the past. We stayed at the Layana for 4 nights as part of our trip and it was my favorite hotel stay out of the 4 hotels we stayed in on our trip. I have to say that the JW Marriott in Phuket was my second favorite but a different kind of experience since the hotel is much bigger than the Layana. The Layana was relaxing, the food was amazing (loved the fresh fruit smoothies at the breakfast buffet each morning), the staff was friendly and attended to our every need and they took the time to get to know us over our short stay.

The resort felt like "A luxury camp for adults". We went on a wonderful snorkilng trip, a sundowner cruise, lounged by the pool and enjoyed pushing the "yellow button" on our umbrellas for service. We also rented a moped and drove around the island and into Saladan to go shopping....being on the moped and viewing the lives of the lovely thai people and their beautiful island was a highlight! I would love to go back to the Layana some day in the future for sure!

Its all been said. This is where serious resort owners and managers should come to see how it's done. Bob, Michael and the staff have nailed it here and ruined the rest. We shall have to return simply to avoid being disappointed in future.

I hope that this can stay like this as this is a beautifull unspoiled place.

My boyfriend & I spent 2 nights in Beach Suite 3 in October 2008. We found the resort through Trip Advisor and booked on the basis that is was listed at #2 World Wide for luxury.

Well, we were not dissapointed. We have travelled the world extensively and stayed in some pretty fancy hotels and resorts, but never have I stayed in a resort as perfect as this.

At check in we were chaufferred to our rooms, where fresh fruit awaited (and was replenished daily). Our room featured an enormous bed, day bed and lounge chair along with spa bath and indoor and outdoor rain shower.

We were steps (and I mean steps) from both the stunning infinity pool and the beach, and though the pool wasn't overly large it was perfect as the resort itself only has 50 rooms. We never had any trouble getting a deck chair. You only need look at one, and the pool boy with have it setup with towels and fresh drinking water.

We ate in the restaurant throughout our stay at there is little surrounding the resort, although the meals were very reasonably priced, as was the drinks. You often find resorts in this situation jack up the prices, but this was not the case here.

We even participated in a Thai Cooking class which was affordable and unforgettable.

We booked through Asia Rooms and got the suite for $258AUD per night. I know that this can double in High Season, but it is still well worth the money. Breakfast was included daily and again, was perfect and faultless. A huge selection without being mass produced, and a dedicated omlette and egg chef, as is the trend in asia.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return again and again. This is the perfect location for relaxing and escaping. I would suggest to anyone considering staying to do so, and if the Beach or Ocean Suites are a little out of your price range, definitely go for a normal room and experience this stunning resort!!

Well done Layana!
