The Houben Hotel ( Adult Only )

Reviewed April 24, 2014

My wife and I have just spent 4 nights at The Houben following the recommendations on Tripadvisor, We were greeted out of our taxi by the reception staff and shown to our room 302 on the top 3rd floor. There is no lift in the Hotel but we didn't feel a need for it and always enjoyed taking in the surrounding views while going to our room. On entering the room we were impressed by the large size of the room and the impressive full glass front leading onto the balcony. The Houben has 15 rooms and the design is clearly to have a reduced number of rooms but of a higher standard and size than the norm for the area of the Hotel Site. All the rooms have a Sea View and the Sunset Views are outstanding. Between the Hotel and the sea is the pool area, this consists of a large pool and Spa Bath, as there are only 15 rooms we often had the Pool and Spa to ourselves. To the side of the Hotel is a wooded section and we were pleasantly surprised to see Monkeys playing in the trees. Despite the wooded area, we suffered no insect bites during our stay, despite rarely applying insect repellent and we were not aware of any other guests being bitten.
We used the Red Alert Restaurant almost entirely for all our meals during our 4 day stay, we found the food to be excellent and not overly expensive for a Hotel of this quality.
The general cleanliness of our room, the pool, restaurant and public areas was immaculate with no issues what so ever.
This is an impressively designed Hotel and only 5 years old so in excellent condition.
Because of all of the above I would have no hesitation in recommending this Hotel if fact I would certainly encourage people to stay here, however I have not yet mentioned the most impressive part of our stay and that was the staff.
Every single member of staff went out of their way to make us welcome at the Hotel, they were always courteous and smiling and genuinely appeared to be happy working at The Houben. What was particularly impressive was the young lady who appeared to manage the Hotel and staff on a day to day basis, her name is Shana and I believe she is the daughter of the Hotel owner, From day one Shana makes a point of addressing all her guests by their names, she is friendly, amusing and extremely hard working. During our stay we continually witnessed her involving herself in every aspect of the running of the Hotel, from reception, to restaurant, bar, pool duties, and even cleaning. We actually thought their must be twins as she appeared to be every where, she always concerned herself that we were enjoying every moment of our stay at The Houben, she is a credit to The Hotel and her family, a remarkable young lady.
Our only complaint that we had with this Hotel is that we only stayed there 4 nights – our loss.

We enjoyed very much during our stay in the hotel. Clean, silent and very comfortable. Very good location with an amazing view. Rich breakfast, hospitable staff and management. The beach is 10 mins walk and it is simply beautiful. The hotel offers you everything you need as a couple.

We spent 4 nights in Ko Lanta at The Houben for the final leg of our honeymoon and were very pleased with our stay there. It ended up being our favorite part of the holiday due to what the hotel and the island had to offer. Some points about The Houben: it's very clean and tidy, the rooms are well equipped and comfortable, one can rent scooters from the hotel for a decent price, the place is well suited for honeymooners, the breakfast provided is delicious and well prepared.
We drank a lot of cocktails during our stay in Thailand and I have to say the hotels' piña coladas were the best we had!:)
We spent a lot of time exploring the island and eating out cause we wanted to experience it all but the one time that we did eat at the restaurant left us very impressed with the quality, taste and price of the food!

One thing I was slightly apprehensive about when booking there was the fact that the hotel is not on the beach. It sits on a cliff overlooking the sea. But this turned out not to be an issue. There are lovely beaches only a few minutes ride/drive from the hotel and so many of them that you wouldn't want to be bound to one anyway. Nonetheless, we enjoyed a few beautiful and romantic sunsets from that cliff sipping on The Houbens delicious cocktails during their happy hour!

Shana and her team were extremely attentive of the hotel guests and we left there with a longing to stay! Will definitely go back there!

My wife and I stayed at The Houben for five nights towards the end of March but wished we had stayed longer. We absolutely loved everything about this place, its location, its architecture but especially the staff who do everything to make your stay special. The hotel is located at the northern end of Kantiang Bay which has a stunning 1km crescent shaped beach which generally has no more than a dozen or so people on it at any one time. The small cluster of restaurants is no more than a 100m from the hotel and we found all the ones we visited to be cheap and outstanding, the Tom Yum soup in Pad Thai Rock 'n Roll is worth the trip to Koh Lanta in itself! We stayed in a room on the second floor of the hotel (201) which was large, well appointed, very clean and had a view to die for. The service is especially worthy of praise, Shana and her team are extremely attentive and genuinely want to ensure that they can make your stayed as memorable as possible. Cocktails in the happy hour became a daily routine and no better way to watch the stunning sun sets you can view from the property. We did eat in the hotel restaurant and although more expensive than the nearby restaurants the quality of the food and the comfort of the surroundings are worth a bit of a splurge. I suppose the ultimately accolade is a repeat visit and in that respect we are already planning our return - I can't wait!

great time on lanta, thanks to this resort and the daytrips to the islands with andaman sky aventures !
they told us we should go for a privilege suite, and oh my that was true ! highly recommend privilege suite at the houben : you have a free-standing, private villa really, with private oceanview terrace/garden with outdoor jacuzzi ( sunset facing! ) cannot recommend it enough. also very different from the other hotels we visited : this hotel has a very special 'look', futuristic. a nice change. but it is all about that room/villa, you will love it (we did :)

We spent 7 nights in The Houben and overall, it was a great hotel. We would definitely return. Summary of the pro's and con's:

Pro's
1. Breakfast was great, even though the menu choices were the same everyday. We were happy to try different dishes everyday, with the occasional repeats of the local Thai breakfast of flat noodle soup because the broth was just amazing. Yum! Coffee was good as well and worth a mention.
2. Small hotel that is away from the crowd, which gave us the peace and quiet that we were looking for.
3. Beautiful sunset and amazing view from our room on the third floor. Note that there are no lifts, however, ground floor rooms are always an option. We strangely loved the stairs as we kept telling ourselves that they offset the overindulgence in food and drinks.
4. Loved the shower gel and lotion. They smell delicious!
5. Great service. All staff were very willing to assist and always cheerful. My partner could not ride a bicycle, so a motorcycle was not an option. They suggested renting a car and organised it for us. This allowed us to explore Koh Lanta.
6. Clean and beautiful room. Epicly massive bed that was nice to sleep in.
7. Thai dinner meals were delicious. The Massaman Curry is a must try.

Con's
1. On the first night after arrival, the Thai chef was not in and we resorted to ordering non-Thai dishes. We were hoping to have some Thai food on our first night, but had to resort to burgers. First world problems, but it was not a good start.
2. On check-out, I was not asked what currency I wanted to be charged in, consequently, I was charged in AUD, which meant that the exchange rate used was the hotel's exchange rate. I would have gotten a better rate from my bank. I was only aware of this after my credit card was charged and noted the hotel's exchange rate printed on the receipt. I was not impressed.
3. As other reviewers have mentioned, the air condition noise may be a nuisance. We were not used to the sound on the first night but eventually zoned out to the sound.
4. Dinner meals were delicious but we found it quite pricey.

My husband and I spent four nights here in January and had an amazing time. The staff was friendly and helpful, breakfast was fresh and yummy, and the pool was wonderful. The biggest pros to the hotel were:
- Very quiet (small number of rooms = less noise!)
- GORGEOUS view and sunset
- Pool is wonderful and relaxing
- VERY close to excellent restaurants in town

The cons were:
- On-site restaurant was so grossly overpriced we didn't even get cocktails except on our last night.
- It seemed you had to reserve the hotel bikes before hand - we were told there were none available, but people who checked in after us were using them so it seemed you must have reserved them before you arrived.

Overall, we had a wonderful four days relaxing by the pool and enjoying the gorgeous view.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first floor if you want pool access from your room or the right tower if you w...
