“Avoid this hotel!”
Reviewed January 24, 2011

We stayed in Lanta New Beach for just over a week. The hotel is in a good location, right on a beautiful beach. The bungalow that we had was not bad, quite spacious, although very sparsely furnished. A table or cupboard would have been helpful. There was hot water.

The hotel staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. Usually the service in Thailand is wonderful, but here the staff was sullen and unpleasant, from the receptionist, who made us feel like she was doing us a favour when we asked her for anything, to the restaurant staff, who brought us the same dish cold, twice. The sheet on the bed was very threadbare, and after a couple of nights it actually tore. We asked the staff to change it for a new one, but were ignored. The barman was the nicest of the lot.

This is a crappy hotel with a surly manager and marginal food . The bartenders were nice.

When we took the ferry from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta, we didn't have any place to stay yet, but we were hoping to stay at 'Where Else'. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to reach this place before or during our trip. They didn't respond to emails or pick up the phone. Later it seemed that they were renovating the place, so that explains it.

So without a place to stay, we took the ferry and we were approached by a few guys that were promoting resorts. One of them was the weed smoking Coco whose family owned Lanta New Beach Bungalows. They offered a great place for 400 baht a night. Seemed nice, but we wanted to keep our options open. Later on, he came to us with a discount of 100 baht per night. So we took the bait and went with him. We didn't pay yet because we wanted to see the place first. Coming there, we saw another couple coming as well. When we were shown the rooms, they got the first choice. Turns out later that that couple took the last available room during the ferry trip and we got one of the older spare rooms. That also explained the sudden 100 baht discount. The room itself was quite big, but the rooms were a bit dirty and the bathroom smelled terrible. Half of the bathroom was flooded as well. To make things worse, there was also a noise every minute or so of a pumping machine starting. This appeared to be some kind of water pump attached to our bungalow.

We were unhappy with this and told management we didn't want the room because of the smell and the noise. They then showed us another old room that was a bit better. There was no pump noise, but the bathroom still had some water on the floor and a bad smell. But we got a big room with a double and single bed, tv and airco for 300 baht per night, so we took it. We slept great there and the surrounding place were a lot more expensive, so we ended up staying the 4 nights that we were at Koh Lanta.

Positive points about this place are the good beds and the low price. They also have a nice swimming pool and cheap cocktails.
Negative points about this place are the smell in the bathroom and the not so good location. It's around 500 meter away from all the action on Klong Khong.
But the biggest negative point is the bad service and management. The boss (a rather small and young muslim lady) never made us feel welcome. She seemed to be the unhappiest person on the island. It was very hard to talk with her as she gave very little attention and short answers. When I proposed to remove the computer virusses that were on their internet computer (for free!), she shunned me. Complaints by us about the tv cable signal being interrupted were answered by a cold and short 'Tomorrow!'.

The restaurant/bar staff is friendly, but they are not good at their job. They consistently forgot (I estimate) around 25% of our orders. The food itself was good, but portions were small. Many better place in the neighbourhood! (To name one, try the Nemoland or Nimoland restaurant on the same street. Small and excellent! A hidden gem.)

All in all, I can say that Lanta New Beach Bungalows could be so much better with good management. As it is now, I wouldn't recommend it, unless you have a really tight budget and don't want to stay at a place like Where Else.

In a very quiet area, not any shops or restaurants within that close of a distance only a small supermarket and atm. I was there with my friend and we just wanted to relax for a couple of days so this place was fine.
Air conditioned rooms, fridge, television, hot shower, swimming pool, balcony on each individual bungalow. good value for money.

Not only is it truly over priced for what you get and the staff don't give a stuff about anything, especially you. So I will just list a few things to expect if you stay here..
1. LAZY Rude arrogant Staff, mobile phones and books far more important.
2. Lousy room amenities including Lousy water pressure, Little to no hot water, They ONLY service/clean rooms every 2 to 3 days as told to us when we enquired why room had not been done after day out. (And god help you when you run out of toilet paper) ((Only 1 Little roll supplied))
3. There is no safety deposit safe either in the room or at reception, but if you want to lock your valuables away, they put them in a office cupboard with a so called lock on it, My 3 yr old Grandson could break into this..
4. I have done a lot of travel and for the same money we paid here, all previous rooms supply these basic things listed, but NOT here. No bin, no complementary water, no tea/coffee, Crap pillows and SO called Doona/Blanket, only 1 power point in whole room so you cannot charge anything and watch TV or run the fridge and if that is not enough go to reception to the so called Staff and ask for a power board. @#$^% (JUST REMEMBER YOU ARE PAYING FOR THIS SERVICE)
5. Upon booking in you will be asked to PAY a 300 baht deposit on the room key, supposedly REFUNDABLE when you book out, but if you don't remember to ask for it you won't get it.
6. The swimming pool looks inviting until you get in and notice the SCUM build up around the edges which was not once cleaned off during our short stay, we only swam here once because after that swim I got a bad EAR infection and to top that off you cannot get a pool towel at ALL, you are expected to use the room towels and remember they only change them every 2 to 3 days.

We've been backpacking for a few months in SE Asia so have some idea, not impressed.
Head back into town and checkout Mermaide Boutique guesthouse, rates on their website for low season are correct, 10 times the hotel for only a little more money. Glad we moved after one night.
Made the old mistake of accepting this place after a Tout approached me on the Ferry to Ko Lanta- his friendly service is where it stopped.
I think Lazy staff have destroyed this place. There is a whole family sitting around there twiddling their thumbs, it would be worth the 600Bht per night for a bungalow if they got off their backsides to help you when you wanted to buy somthing, cleaned the rooms, fixed the broken fibro above their heads, screwed the pool light in so it wasnt dangling, made our air conditioner go below 25 deg.
There was one guy doing the gardening doing a fair job, as for the rest of them, if they fixed their service and did some work it would be worth staying here.

My boyfriend & I travelled around Thailand in july/august 08, im just getting to write reviews now. If you are going to Koh Lanta DO NOT STAY HERE! The only reason we stayed here (for 3 nights) was because we booked a package through a travel agent in Krabi and she led us to believe it was lovely (same with where she booked us into in Krabi...both awful spots...obviously she was looking after her mates sending business their way)...

Anyway the minibus driver who got us to Koh Lanta was a nutcase, its a miracle we arrived there alive at all. Once we got there I was very disappointed, the whole place is run down, shabby, and gives the impression of a family home with a few huts around it. The manager of the place was this guy who, when we arrived, kept boasting of how he owned the whole place and was the manager etc... The bungalow we stayed in was really run down, the bathroom was very very basic, a hose for a shower basically and the sink was about to fall off the wall. I wasn't happy about the bed linen and so we slept in our silk sleeping bag liners we had and used our own pillow cases. If we could've left we would have but had no way of getting back to Krabi until the minibus collected us 3 days later! Plus other accomodation is too widespread to be able to walk to it with bags etc.

The food was not great also, we only ate there once but put it this way, I don't want to think of how clean the kitchen was. All these teenage guys were hanging around the place too, like they were family memebers but didn't actually do anything. On our last night we witnessed a horrible scene, an english guy who came to stay for work went to go to his room and a cat had HAD A LITTER of kittens on his bed! Blood everywhere etc....he came and demanded to see the manager (the guy who had been boasting to us earlier) and this same guy denied he was the manager and pretended he couldnt speak english! It was horrible. All the staff ignored him until eventually one of the girls came to change the sheets or whatever...this is after one of the younger guys starting squaring up to him and almost starting a fist-fight! I couldnt get away fast enough.

The majority of staff can't speak english and the ones who do speak it selectively so don't expect much help if what you need to speak to them about is about a problem....

Worst place we stayed in thailand. Avoid at all costs.
