Another amazing temple experience that is great for photos and just a relaxing day break from Bangkok. The city is a UNESCO world heritage site and for good reason. Bring a wide angle lens and comfy shoes.

I took the train, walked to the ferry (5 baht) then hired a bike ( 50 baht) to explore the historical city and although it was a warm day the experience of riding around these ancient and wonderful monuments was magical. The site with the Buddha in the tree is very busy but worth the wait. A 50 baht entrance fee into the Historical Park then enjoy the sights. Bring water and umbrella to shade from the heat. I had a wonderful day exploring the city and traveling by train gave me a perspective of modern Thai life.

This is the core of historic Ayutthaya. A must see. For the best experience, I suggest coming in the morning, before the heat sets in and the arrival of buses with Chinese tourists. There are lots of them.... You can walk around the ruins close to the entrance that includes Wat Mahathat with the Buddha head in the tree. The park is much larger and I wanted to walk it all, but as of april 2019 there was a lot of construction work on the grounds. Looked like they were landscaping so we left that for our next visit. You can hire a tuk tuk at the entrance to take you to see all the sights, or you can rent a bike nearby and leave it at the park entrance when you are finished. Ask in the ticket counter for directions

Ayutthaya was the second capital of Siam (Thailand). It is named after the city of Ayodhya from the Hindu Epic Ramyana (Ramakien in Thai). It is an expanse of scattered Buddhist temples, shrines and palatial ruins. Reminds on of Hampi (the capital of Vijaya nagar ) kingdom in south India. Coincidentally both are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

If you are into history and like visiting monuments, it is a one day trip from Bangkok.

Went to Ayutttaya with family on a conducted tour from our hotel in Bangkok. The ancient ruins of this historic place has been maintained very well. A bit of walking is involved to see the place properly.
