After the decline of the Khmer empire of Angkor kings Ayutthaya became the capital of the empire of Siam. This lasted for more than 400 years into the 18th century before the Burmese razed the city.
The former palaces, temples and buildings can be seen all over Ayutthaya, some in a slightly restored condition, others just ruins.
World heritage site since 1991.
Take at least a day to explore!

We travelled on a day tour with BKK tours from our hotel in Bangkok. They collected us promptly in a private airconditioned mini-van, with cold water and cold towels as needed throughout the day at 8h30. An hour and a half or so drive out of Bangkok we arrived at Auytthaya and spent the day visiting a monastery on an island accessible only by cable car, different ruins or palaces or temples, and actual temples witnessing the wonderful dressing of the Buddha, walking in the steps of ancients - learning lots of history, and had a lovely traditional Thai lunch half way. Back at the hotel by 4pm for a well deserved swim!

Stunning place. More than one temple. All are gorgeous. Just look at the pictures. Drive took us 1.5 hour from Bangkok.

Place of tranquility and meditation! Although packed with people it is worth visiting, this temple. Try be there early in the morning since there is not much shade. Τoilers are also available in this ruin, make sure you have some coins with you, bcause it is not for free.

We can recommend this place to visit. Low admission and few visitors. Very nice ruins. Really better temple than similar in Bangkok.
