We made the mistake of arriving in Ayutthaya without a hotel reservation - don't do this! All of our three top choices were full, and subsequently we landed here at the Ayutthaya Guesthouse. Fortunately, the place was completely empty and I chose the best room in the place (downstairs room with green walls and an air conditioner).
The best way that I can describe this place is that the owner puts in the least amount of work possible to create a semi-decent place. He and one maid appear to be the only people that work there - and he is hardly ever there (meaning if you have a question or need something, you'll likely be waiting for hours...). And, when he does show up he's really not very friendly at all (except to try and sell you a tourist package). The lobby and kitchen are cluttered. Most of the rooms are actually pretty gross (peeling paint on the walls, little to no windows, etc.). As I mentioned, we scored the only decent room - it was generally clean and recently painted, but it had a bad sewer smell and only one small window that didn't let in any light. The layout of the room itself is bizarre as well, and the toilet is in the room (not in a water closet) - so, if you're rooming with someone else it can be more than a bit awkward.
The only positives...We made the mistake of arriving in Ayutthaya without a hotel reservation - don't do this! The only positives that I can give for this place is that the room was decently clean without bedbugs (though there were definitely quite a few mosquitoes lurking the room), and it was quite cheap (only USD 16 for a private room). The low price wasn't worth it to me though....More
