“A crime against Thailand”

We got the broiled duck with taro...it was polenta-style taro mushed with barely any duck. The mixed green salad had wilted lettuce hidden underneath with the fresh stuff on top. The deep fried bird with pepper and garlic was chopped up with bones included and was hard as wood chips. True, these are not the traditional curries and noodle dishes, but these dishes don't belong on any menu, they are just that terrible.

Save your money, go to the market or some place where you see locals eating.

“Excellent food in beautiful location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2013

This riverside restaurant close to the old centre of Ayuthaya has lovely views of the river and excellent food. They have English as well as Thai menus. A singer / guitarist plays music of the sixties (not too loudly so that you cannot comfortably talk over the music).
Staff were very busy and not all speak good English, but they were all friendly and helpful and we had such a nice meal the first night, we went back for a second meal.
Go early if you want a good table right by the river.

“You like surprises and telling interesting stories? Eat here.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 29, 2012

We arranged a meeting with a couple in this restaurant. At first it was a bit problematic to get a nice table but everything seemed really promissing. There were a lot of people, it was mentioned in the lonely planet and one of the Inn keepers recommented the restaurant. Also it seemed to have nice prices.
Some of the waitresses were dressed a bit... lets say sexy (tight short dress where you could see the shoulders) which was irritating because it made the impression of "additionally services after the meal for the right money". Ordering the beverages was no problem, the beer came without ice cubes. The problems began with the main dishes: This was our second day in thailand and seeing all these unhygienic foodstands on the street i decided to eat vegetarian. So I ordered something like "young coconut in thick gravy" and got a coconut filled with crabs and other seafood. I was really upset and tried to explain our waitress the problem but her english was not so good so we had to wait for another waitress to at least explain my problem. They took back my dish and gave me a vegetarian thai style salad which was really hot and delicious but not enough for a starving tourist ;) And it was not the only problem. My boyfriend wanted to eat ox tongue but it was out of order so he ordered grilled squid which tasted like nothing at all. Our friends had the same luck: in the entrance hall there were some tasty looking fishes and large shrimps, so he ordered shrimps and she ordered fish. Her fish took like 30 minutes which was okay because it was alive the moment she ordered. But I think she did expect something like fish filet because she was not amused when the fisch as a whole came on a fish-formed pan right on top of a small oven. Also it had a lot of garlic and i mean a lot. His luck was even worse, his shrimps were normal small shrimps and they were raw. He took the risk of a food poisening and bravely ate half of them just to find out they were super spicy (chili). Afterwards he took the waitress to the entrance shrimps and said he wanted these, cooked.
So our trip to this recommented restaurant was really an adventure. Most of the guests were thai and the staff was nice but not prepared for (newly arrived) tourists. I'm pretty sure we would not have eaten there if we new what would happen. Oh also: in the evening the karaoke boats are really annoying.

“Not as special as expected - no charme at all!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 6, 2012

Famous for the huge Bodhi Tree in the middle of the restaurant area, Sai Thong is a rather grubby and run-down place.
Their staff doesn't have any smiles at all. Apparently they think that the river view is enough of a sight.
The food is nothing outstanding.

“Unfriendly staff, disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2012

This restaurant came highly recommended by our guest house and while the view along the river for a sunset dinner was spectacular, we left annoyed with the entire experience.

We've been in Thailand for a week now and while the service in general has not always been great, this restaurant has been the worst of our experiences. The staff was less than friendly - even cold toward us when we arrived, when they took our order and when the dishes were delivered.

They did deliver a plate of toasted cashews which we assumed to be a complimentary appetizer but this proved to be a money grab as it was added to our bill. To their credit, after an unhappy discussion, they did remove it from our bill and fix another item that was billed higher than the menu price.

The food was mediocre Thai cuisine and it's only for the location that this restaurant is worth visiting.
