Owner description: A memorable moment in Ayutthaya, the former capital of Thailand. On a relaxing bike ride you will visit the main highlights and a few hidden gems of what was the most splendid city of the East. Board a gorgeous converted rice barge where you will enjoy a Thai feast and take in this incredible cruise.

Pros: Comfortable boat trip from Bangkok to Ayutthaya; food was okay on boat; small group size was very nice; bikes were in good condition; ruins were very interesting; and stopping at the information center was helpful.

Cons: Guide's limited English was difficult for us to understand and so we did not find out much about what we saw from the boat and at the historical sites. Guide was somewhat difficult to follow in the heavy road traffic on the bikes. The weather was hot, humid, sunny and therefore and biking and sightseeing was not too comfortable.

What would we do different next time: Next time we would do a tour of ruins that starts in Ayutthaya as early in the morning as possible. A sunrise tour would be ideal to avoid both heavy road traffic and the intense heat. We would seek out a knowledgable guide that we can understand well.

That was very unusual experience in Ayutthaya. Slow floating through dark sleeping ancient city was very relaxing. The small boat is quite small, so there were only three tables. I can't say food was outstanding, but all dishes were tasty. The service is good, but be warned, they have very short beverage list. A good idea is to bring some bottle which you favour to the board. And of course there in no restroom on the board. Also they offer picking up from hotel and there is no reason to refuse it

We went down to the train station and took the one hour train ride up to Ayutthaya for the family cycling and cruise that we had booked earlier. We wanted to try the train for immersion and to get more into the "country". From the Ayutthaya train station, we grabbed a tuk tuk (they're waiting at the station) and rode the 5 minute drive to Boat & Travel's building. Once there, we were greeted by friendly staff who proceeded to get to know us and to equip us with bikes. The bike tour took us through town, the local museum for a quick indoctrination, and the major ruins - quite a treat and a great way to explore! Afterwards, thinking we were done with the main activities, we were driven over to the river where we picked up a covered boat for a nice cruise around Ayutthaya. Waiting on the boat was a dining table with a multi-course hot lunch. We cruised the river and ate lunch while seeing more ruins and sites, but this time from the river! After docking, our guide walked us across to the train station and bid us goodbye and on our way back via a return train. Highly recommended.

Had a great evening with a last minute phone call booking a rice barge dinner tour. They arranged a reasonable tuk tuk who took us and dropped us off. Ms boong (ms beauty!) was attentive and easy to talk with as she served us a piping hot and delicious dinner. We learned a little more about Ayutthaya and the surrounding area.

The boat is gorgeous, and in contrast to the speaker busting gangnam style karaoke barges, played traditonal music. The captain was a steadfast, friendly man who knew his business backwards and forwards. A fairly romantic dinner!

The whole trip takes around 1.5 hours.

Critique:

- A little expensive. Including a single beer or glass of wine with dinner would pull it into line.
- 7:30 departure time isn't ideal. I think this trip would best take place during sunset/twilight. 5:30?
- Can probably skip the grape juice served with dinner.

We did the bike-only tour of Ayutthaya. Our guide, Moo Moo, is faultless. But having traveled the world, we found that the tour is extremely expensive for what we covered in two and a half hours. We could've done a similar thing for a fraction of the price - with a guidebook and a rented bike. True, we may not know the back roads as well as a local, but Ayutthaya is a small town to navigate and half the fun is getting lost! As such, I really don't get what these other reviewers are raving about.....
