I couldn't imagine a better trip than we had with Ayutthaya Boat and Travel Team. We went on the boat and bicycle day trip to Ayutthaya from Bangkok in March. The scenery from the boat was beautiful, the boat was surprising luxurious and our lunch was delicious with a great selection. Our guide Sarah was friendly, very informative and spoke excellent english. Ayutthaya itself is a must see and travelling by bike was a really great way to take in the sights. We had a great time with her and she even too us through a market there and bought us a traditional dessert that we shared. We would recommend Ayutthaya Boat and Travel Team to just about anyone and hope to try another one of their tours if we ever get back to Thailand.

I absolutely recommend doing the Night Bike tour with Ayutthaya Boat & Travel!! Biking makes the entire city and all its wats accessible to you. You feel more like an active participant compared to walking or tuk tuk-ing. We saw Ayutthaya by both day and night - though both are unique, the landscape is magnificent at night. The added perk is that the wats may be more enjoyable away from the midday sun.

I cannot say enough good things about Moo. She stood outside the Ayutthaya Boat & Travel Office (at a large busy intersection) and waved us down. Seeing that we were having difficulties crossing the street, she came across to get us. She is every bit the gracious, helpful and charming person everyone describes her to be. She even treated us to banana pancakes during our visit at Wat Chai Wattaranam. These are the small things that count.

The bike experience was unreal. I’ve never biked in traffic before, nonetheless on left sided lanes and busy roadways. Moo and her co-worker were consummate professionals and we always felt safe. One guided at the front, the other guided at the back. When a major turn had to be made, the 2nd guide would ride up and stand IN the intersection to wave us all through. Safety precautions such as helmets, lights, reflective vests and properly fitted bikes were all ensured before we took off. For this tour, participants should probably be comfortable with biking basics. It would be less enjoyable for someone who is wobbly on flat surfaces and unable to handle bumpy sections of the road. At each wat, Moo would give us the historic background in great (but accented) English before giving us 15-30 minutes to look around.

The 3 hour itinerary was well timed. They picked the most distinct wats for visits.
1) Wat Chedi Sri Suriyothai: Seen in the fading daylight, explored the grounds and shown a map of our destinations.
2) Wat Chai Wattaranam: Massive structure, reminiscent of Siem Riep. We strolled by the river for a full view of the structure at dusk. It was perfect for photos.
3) Wat Phra Sri Sanphet: Its famous 3 chedis are lit up against the night sky. A great photo op, but no opportunity to go into the grounds.
4) Wat Rajaburana: To our surprise, the property was not fenced off, so we (carefully) scaled the stairs and got to explore right into the heart of the central prang.
5) Wat Mahathat: This is the location for the famed Buddha in the Tree. *** This wat was skipped because the wat's lighting was affected by the flood. Nevertheless, we did make a visit in the day because Boat & Travel had advised that the Buddha would not be visible on the tour.

If you have the luxury of staying overnight, I strongly recommend night biking, a unique experience that left us with lasting impressions of Ayutthaya.

Visiting the ruins and the temples in Ayyuthaya was a great experience. We started off in the morning from our hotel to Ayyuthaya and had to finish the historic visit by late afternoon to experience the boat cruise.

The lunch cruise was really an amazing experience. We had an array of delicious thai food to sample while we cruised along the river, back to our hotel in BKK. The guided commentary was hilarious and we enjoyed the sights along the river, treating ourselves to a well deserved sumptuous lunch after the visit in Ayyuthaya.

The cruise is an amazing experience you must indulge in when you are in BKK.

We booked our trip through Viator, you can make your own way there but in the essence of time we just wanted to get there hassle free.
We got picked up by mini bus from our hotel before joing the rest of the party on a coach. Our tour guide was called "Paul" and he was brilliant and hilarious and new so much about Thailand being a native himself. We started at the summer palace which was unexpected and I hadn't come prepared and was wearing shorts so had to rent a wrap from the entrance. If you're going to see any temples, I'd suggest popping some light weight trousers or a scarf in your bag as you never know when you might need them!
We wen't on to see all the other temples and it was great but each stop was only about 45 minutes long before jumping on the coach and heading off to the next. if you want to spend a longer time there, I'd suggest staying over for 1 night and maybe renting a tuk tuk or bicycle.
We then got the boat back to Bangkok where we were served a buffet lunch and then sat on the deck for 2 hours basking in the sunshine and watching the riverbanks.
A beautiful day outside of a chaotic city!

Although Ayutthaya is outside Bangkok, I would recommend it to tourists coming to Bangkok, because it was one of two things that made our Bangkok trip memorable.

The ancient city ruins were just fantastic to see, absorb & photograph, especially the mysterious Buddha head caught in tree roots.

The bottled water & wet wipes were complimentary w/ the tour we booked with Pannee, our tour guide.

During the tour we visited the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace first, then the 3 most popular temples in Ayutthaya, including the gigantic Reclining Buddha.

At the Bang Pa-in Summer Palace, pants are required, but NOT in the stops within Ayutthaya.

Needless to say, dont forget your sunscreen, and wear comfy flat shoes.
