Don't expect 5-star accomodation but the environment is just top-class. Astonishing nature and lots of interesting people with amazing projects going on. It is a totally off-grid community trying to establish self-sustainability. Nice bhajans on Sunday afternoon! Every room has his own little alternative energy system and kitchen, bring some basic cooking ingredients if you want to give yourself a treat but there is also a community kitchen/hangout for the lazy ones.

Room Tip: Get a hydro-powered room if you need lots of 220V power.

Pros: 1. Awesome Location. 2. Rustic hut style accomodation, with simple pretty comfy beds .3. nothing but forest/farm Trees/plants. 4. have a waterfall on premises!! .5. average food. 6. Awesome for trekkers/hikers/birdwatchers. 7. rooms/Huts/cottages between 450-1500.

cons: 1. outside loos (only for low priced rooms). 2. bad roads if getting there by own transport, four wheel drive only, till 1.5 Kms away from farm, then ur on foot .3. hippy/ agrarian 'art of living' atmosphere (subjective of course).

Room Tip: cottage called 'saraswati' was the best, with an awesome view.

way way way out in nowhere on the slopping mountain side, this little community is to find. Small eatery is there - with a veg menu of what ever they have, but besides this you will come here for peace and be alone with a book or good wander boots OR you stay for longer to be part of the residential community scattered around in small self build houses. Sunday is getting together day wit common lunch, so good time to say hello to all nationalities, kids and dogs alike. We took the 1000 rs. premium hut, which has the very great advantages of a fantastic view. Do not expect a hotel nor home stay. Basic needs are provided - food, clean water and roof over your head. Use the recommended driver to get there (do not drive your self!) - as he also functioning as the provider of basic needs whenever he has to go anyway (or you pay him off for the trip)

Room Tip: If you don't want the premium hut then ask to see a few - they are very different. The premium has a nice outdoor seating with fireplace and great view - big kitchen and indoor fire-oven as well. On top it is easy to get to the community kitchen without falling down the mountain or getting lost in the jyngle at night

This is a very special place with its own unique energy. A short jeep ride from Kodaikanal (or you could take the bus and walk the last bit), it’s gloriously quiet and the views down to the plains are stunning. The accommodation consists of cottages and houses of various standards, scattered around the hillside and connected by footpaths, with some wild forest and some cultivated areas (banana trees, coffee, etc). The house I stayed in was quite rustic, with a wood burning stove and a bathroom attached. You could have a cold shower or use the gas ring to heat water for a bucket wash. If you’re looking for air conditioning and all mod cons, this is not the place for you, but if you want to feel close to nature and slow down a bit, it’s a good choice.

There is a small kitchen where they provide nice meals on request, or you can cook for yourself in your cottage. The place is run by a very obliging guy who can provide firewood, etc. As a solo traveller I appreciated the sociable atmosphere of the place – the common area by the kitchen is a good place for hanging out. There are good opportunities for self-guided treks in the surrounding hills. I stayed for four nights but could have stayed longer.

I can for sure say that I have never spent a night at a more beautiful, serene and peacful place than Karuna Farms. Do not expect much comfort, but this is a perferct retreat if one wants to escape the concrete jungles. According to me, the fag end of the monsoons is the best time to be there when the waterfall next to the farm makes the maximum sounds.

Carry some drinking water. The farm has hired a few cooks from Himachal so meals isn't a problem. PLEASE DO rent the more expensive (approx. Rs. 1500/- per night) and bigger rooms. Such a hippie feel to it. 4 guests can comfortably stay in it. They have a balcony that opens up to the Western Ghats. My cottage was 5 steps away from the waterfall (IMAGINE THAT!!)

10 out of 5 stars based on my 1-night experience — how i wish i could spend more time there:(

Room Tip: Karuna Farms is a very simple place and is driving towards self-sufficiency. Be prepared to experience very limited electricity. Charging mobile phones might be a problem (there is no network there, and moreover, do think of throwing away your phone once you are there). Carry sports shoes or hiking boots as the trails around the farm can get a little messy during the monsoons I strongly suggest the bigger rooms which might cost you about Rs. 500 more, its wholly, completely, totally worth it
