“Away from the hustle bustle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2014

After many years we went to Kodaikanal - first time for my children. We had found Cinnabar on the internet and it looked & sounded lovely - pleasant weather particularly when compared to sweltering chennai, a farm with food cooked fresh from the land, place for the kids to run & play. Our stay was everything we had hoped. Bala and Vasu, the lovely owners of Cinnabar did everything to ensure our stay was the complete break from the everyday hustle bustle of life. This property has just two bedrooms away from the main house, we had taken both bedrooms and so were the only residents - would definitely recommend to do that; a huge lawn to play on, complete with a bouncy, energetic dog and a market garden which grows an amazing range of fruits and vegetables. The kids had a great time plucking and eating plums, beans and more straight off the plant and "harvesting" the vegetables that become dinner! Food in Cinnabar is homely, delicious with the added advantage of the menu being customised to guest preferences. Very good food that almost (but not quite) did not leave enough space for Vasu's decadent deserts. The rooms are large with big windows and big beds with high wooden ceilings and floors. Very comfortable, very clean.
Our advice: Go if you want a break from the city to enjoy a more peaceful, serene time. Dont go if you want a lot of action & activity & 5 star trappings and service.
We would go back in a heartbeat and the children want to move to Kodaikanal.

Room Tip: There are only 2 rooms in this property, would recommend to go with enough people (5 - 7) to take bo...

Vasu & Bala are an fantastic couple ! Really good food, great conversation with very knowledgeable hosts and beautiful weather - perfect ingredients that made for a nice little Kodai break and holiday - away from the sweltering heat of Hyderabad.

Cinnabar B&B is nicely located on the top of a small hill, fairly close to the Kodai lake, yet far from the summer crowds. The rooms are large and nicely done up in wood which adds a rather rustic charm to the place. Squeaky clean bathrooms (always the key). The place comes with a highly affectionate puppy called Chippy (rather large for a puppy, though :)

Vasu & Bala went to great lengths to make our stay truly comfortable. Bala emailed sound advice prior to travel, and Vasu helped us plan the day trips upon arrival, offered some good tips on shopping and arranged all the logistics of transport etc. The breakfast and dinners were varied and always excellent - and the home-made breakfast granola was a real delight! They have some good live-in help , but it was interesting to see Bala and Vasu cater to the us, themselves. That way there was always a "personal touch" element to the experience.

Thank you for an very unique, first home-stay experience. Would love to visit again!

Room Tip: The room with the TV!

This was our first trip to Kodai and turned out to be one of the best holiday experience we had.
We fell in love with the place , the minute we saw it! The room had a large comfortable bed a small cozy bed very apt for our daughter , a TV/tata sky enabled. The room also displayed creative art work ,done by vasu herself .The bath room is very clean and well maintained with hot water all the 24 hrs .There is a huge lawn , where the kids can play around n a porch to enjoy ur morning sip of coffee .
The hosts Vasu and Bala were a big reason to make our stay memorable ...starting from the exceptional hospitality they extended , to the yummy , healthy home cooked food they served along with brilliant interesting conversations they keep u engaged with. They also extended help to plan the day for us , with maps, eateries which made it so much easy to go around the city. Our daughter loved their company had a wonderful time with the board games we played after dinner . The cheese cake and the pudding served for desert was just o/standing ..not to forget the super delicious pesarat and granola we had for breakfast.
Overall ...we had a truly rejuvenating holiday at cinnabar n wud definitely want to go back again
Luv U guys - Vasu n Bala !!!

Crisp mountain air scented with pine and eucalyptus and gently rolling grounds dotted with fruit trees. This is the setting for Cinnabar Farm in Kodaikanal.Where nature’s bounty is only offset by the warmth, good sense and humour of the hosts themselves – Bala and Vasu. The rooms are comfortable and stylish, the food healthy and delicious. Learn about rain harvesting, sustainable farming, cheese making and whatnot. Take a break and become blessed by spending a few days at this unique farm and home-stay. Raise the bar on your holiday experience. The proof of the pudding is in the eating – so hustle and get there fast !

We really enjoyed our stay at Cinnabar and the owners Bala and Vasu were a big part of the reason why we did. They have so much energy and warmth that it made the stay memorable. We truly enjoyed their company very much.
Their home is beautiful and located in a quiet part of Kodai. The lake is at a walkable distance and so are the eating places on PT road and around the 7 roads junction. They have two rooms in a cottage located at the back of their home and we had the larger of the two. Very beautifully done rooms, elegant and understated. Impeccably clean and well maintained. Comfortable beds, a beautiful bathroom and a small sitting area outside make it fun to be in when you are relaxing after a long day. The welcome chocolates were yum. They have a separate larger porch in the main house that you can sit in as well. The grounds are large enough for kids to run around. Which they can do along with their Chippyparai hound appropriately named Chippy.

The food is outstanding and is one of the pleasures to look forward to in the day. Since only breakfast and dinner is served, one can spend the whole day outside between them and sample various recommended eating places in town. Their homemade granola is outstanding as is the cheesecake, bread and cheese. We gorged on these all the time! We stayed five nights and one night was pizza night, super delicious and completely wiped out by us! The Burmese food one night was very yummy as well. As were the savoury muffins. I could go on and on about the food but I'll stop here.

Our daughter had a lovely time with all the fun books that Vasu so kindly lent her. And the board games after dinner were so much fun both for her and for us. She had a fun time with Chippy too. Overall we had such a great time we are sure going back again. As my wife said, it didn't feel like we were visiting Kodai; it felt more like we were visiting Vasu and Bala!

Room Tip: The larger one with the TV and the Tata Sky+ HD connection is the one we stayed in. The slightly sma...

I was a bit worried about how this home-stay experience will turn out considering my own age (79) and the fact that my wife and I have some food restrictions. The worry was needless. Our every need and concern was attended to by the Bala and Vasu, the remarkable couple who run this impeccably clean well-maintained and picturesque property at a very convenient location in Kodaikanal. In fact we were given not just ample hospitality but a virtual gourmet treatment. Add to that the pleasure of getting to know two most interesting persons with diverse interests and the effort they put into their cute farm!
We could not have asked for more!
