“Cozy Castle Hideaway ...”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

Excellent... and why not?!? The coziest place we could have imagined 'this' side of Chittorgarh. The Maharajah and his d-in-law the Maharani are what the Dutch would call 'gezellig' -- friendly and welcoming, and somehow 'cozy', as is the whole property -- the rooms, the halls, the courtyards, the pool (although it was too cold for a dip when we were there), the gardens; but also the staff. There's room for improvement with regards to the menu; what they did serve tasted very good and the service was warm and professional. If we are ever in that area again, we will definitely book a room. Definitely.

I was travelling with my mother and we stayed on the second floor with the blue tones in the common area which overlooked the pool area. This is a place where you can enjoy doing nothing as I did, otherwise you can do horseriding, etc. The walk into town is interesting bypassing pigs and cows down the narrow lanes.. the old town isn’t where you would expect to find a castle, however it did remind me of a small Kasbah as it had a lot of areas to look around at once inside. The air conditioning was great (both fan/ac) and beds comfortable. The optional extras were a bit expensive for India standards. I did try to hire a bike but unfortunately the bikes aren't new and the seats are rusted in so they cannot be adjusted. They do charge for WiFi and computer use and the computer screen is hard to view. Stick to the beers at the restaurant because other options are too hard or you might get flat soda water. I also stayed at their luxury tented camping site about 1hrs drive from the castle which I cannot fault and is run by the same people!!

Room Tip: 2nd or 3rd floor in the main building but be aware there are stairs.

This was the nicest place we stayed during our Intrepid tour. It was our one day for true rest and relaxation. Our room was lovely as was the pool area. The massage was really nice; however I suggest sticking with a body massage as the head massage wasn't what I thought it was going to be (lot of scratching and shaking vs. massaging). The food was buffet style (tasted good); therefore it wasn't very local. The food catered to more of an international crowd, not so much for folks looking for the real thing. Either way, the fire at night and the little band was amazing. Overall, I would definitely come back here in a heartbeat. You may want to ask for a room away from the main area. We had to walk through a family’s living room to get to our rooms which was slightly awkward.

Spent 3 nights exploring the local area & loved it. You get a real feel for both the life of the Indian aristocracy & their ongoing influence as the main local employer. Rao Sahib, the maharaja is a superb host, full of stories and advice. The restaurant is reasonable and there is a nice pool.

I stayed one night at Castle Bijaipur in Bijaipur village and one night at the castle's lakeside camping ground as part of an Intrepid tour. The stay was good but not perfect. Some parts of the hotel were quite beautiful (I was delighted by the floral displays around the place), some were a little run down. Our exotic room, a large ground floor room with handsome decoration and a large, sunken bath, delighted me, even if the arthritic air cooler and a useless standard fan failed to address the heat. The buffet meals served were unadventurous but adequate, the breakfast was dreary, the coffee was always good. The Castle, with its gardens, pool, outdoor lounges and sitting areas, corridors and battlements was a great place for relaxation, even without taking advantage of the various optional tours and extras. Even more peaceful and relaxing, I thought, was the deluxe camping ground, an hour or so's ride away, which offered very pleasant facilities and a pretty setting. Service was generally quite welcoming, except for certain front desk staff at the hotel who did not even try to be pleasant. I wasn't surprised, upon check-out, to find that using the reception area's computer (which was a heritage item in itself, with part of the screen blacked out) was not free (although no prices were quoted or sign displayed) and that every last rupee (at a rate considerably higher than the going rate elsewhere) would be collected before customers left.

Room Tip: Some rooms that I saw were better than others, but none was your standard, modern hotel room.

Absolutely fabulous hotel, run by the Singh family. Great welcome and the rooms are really spectacular. A really nice place to take a break from the hustle and noise of India with its swimming pool. The staff here are hard working and keen to please. Highly recommended.

Castle Bijaipur is one of my favourite places in Rajasthan which I have often visited.  Once you step through the entrance you are greeted by the friendly staff and made to feel really welcome and it is as if you have entered another serene world.  The Castle is owned and run by a wonderful Royal Rajput family whose home it is.  The gardens are filled with flowers and you can either relax by the beautiful swimming pool, join a yoga class or just sit in peace and read a book in the courtyard.  The Castle has a stable of magnificent Marwari horses and you can go for rides in the countryside whether you are a complete beginner or an expert.  Take a bicycle so you can ride and see the surrounding area and villages.  The area has many birds and you can be escorted by Rao Sahib, the owner of the castle, for early mornings walks,  he is a very knowledgeable and keen photographer and has many beautiful bird photos on the walls of the dining room.
The emphasis here is on peace, take a massage and relax but if you feel in need of adventure you can also take a jeep safari to the villages or the lotus lake at Pangarh.  I spent 10 days here over Christmas and New Year on my first visit five years ago and keep coming back. Rooms are all different and comfortably furnished with antiques and have modern bathrooms.  I love it, hope you do too!
