“Fantastic example of a step well”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2013

The Rani ji ki Baori is a beautifully maintained step well with a different feel to the conventional step wells that I have seen. This is a lovely cool place to visit in the middle of a hot day as one can sit and enjoy the quietness and view the statues mounted in the walls.

“even better than the palace!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 21, 2013

When in Bundi - take the time to look around for these step wells - there's a lot of them, not just those listed in guidebooks. It's worthwhile to look for the less important one's tucked away in narrow streets. Perhaps this is the best of Bundi - the very unique thing, you don't see elsewhere (unlike palaces, for example :))

“Spectacular”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2013

We went to the Raniji Ki Baori on advice of folks we met at the hotel. It is beautiful and a bit unworldly. Very easy to get to as it is only about 10 minutes walk from the fort. We were told the women not only went there to get water but to socialize. They would even wear special clothes and primp as it was "the place to be seen" in its time.

sad that the bundi people don't understand what they have like art heritage. if they don't care first nobody can do it. i was really angry during my visit in bundi... when a tourist come in bundi he is not interested in shopping but in architecture....

“Bundi stepwells architectural wonders of the world”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2013

These stepwells took us completely by surprise. I was expecting a traditional well with a few steps and carvings but these are extraordinary constructions - huge architectural wonders like something out of a Piranesi etching. We saw the two most dramatic ones with the help of excellent local guide: Banwar Singh Hada - fluent English speaker, urbane, knowledgeable and amusing. I think they'd be quite difficult to find on your own so highly recommend his services. He also got us access to locked rooms and paintings in the Garh Palace and took us out to old hunting lodges, the stepwells and cenotaphs we would never have found, all the way giving us penetrating insight into local culture and historical context (without any of the typical guide spiel). Advise booking him in advance email bhanwarsing@gmail.com (no 'h' in singh) or mobile +91 9829083479.
