“cold comfort”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

Visiting this hotel in January was a mistake as airy marble balconies and open staircases are attractive only in a heatwave. Superficially attractive, but low on comfort and service. The door lock had been forced at some time and was very hard to operate. Hair dryer did not function and neither did the TV. As we were bird-watching all day we were dusty and tired and in need of a good warm shower.Hot water is theoretically provided by solar panels - totally ineffective in January! We were told to run the water for 5 minutes, but never achieved a comfortable heat. Moreover, inefficient plumbing of the wash basin resulted in over-spill of water and a floor that was always wet.
We found this a very lonely hotel with no-one to discuss the day's bird-watching with as it tends to attract tour groups rather than couples. This was the only hotel in a month's travel where we were pestered - both by the hotel's shop keeper and, more persistently, by the resident puppeteer who almost put us off visiting the restaurant. Food at breakfast was excellent though, but of variable quality in the evening. We had a delicious tender lamb biriani the first night, but our second order two night's later was much less tender and less well cooked. The prices were very high with vegetable biriani costing R260 and plain rice R220!!! Finally, there was no written information in the room about meal times or services, though this is a common defect, we found.

Room Tip: Go there only in a heat-wave.

The rooms are clean but have aged. Bathroom, linen etc was clean which was a big deal for us. There was no hot water in our rooms, even though the hotel insisted without bothering to actually check. If you need any service like requesting a heater or room service, you have to really make yourself heard.

Food at the restaurant was reasonably good though service again was slow.

Had to stay here since it has been forced upon by a client whose plant we were visiting. The website looks decent And the name sounded like an Oberoi property and hence I was curiously looking forward to the stay !

Checked in around 9 PM. The property looks cool and majestic when you enter. You get pissed at the reception desk. And you realize the Gulf between Fantasy and reality is harshly wide....... or widest, to be specific upon entering the room. NOTHING is in order here. From reception desk, to house keeping, room service and so on and so forth. The room heaters must have stopped working in the 90s I guess ! They look like another ornamental piece in your room. The people manning this place don't know the meaning of Hospitality. They have a couldn't care less attitude. You have to remind them 3 times after ordering room service to get the stuff if you are enormously lucky.

The only saving grace for this property is the food which is tasty but its of no use when you get it cold on your table by people who have an appalling sense of service. I checked out the very next day thanks to the client who shifted me to their own guest house after I ranted about the apathy which reigns supreme here.

The rooms are big, spacious and that's about it They have everything but nothing ! This property is pretty with its external appearance, the rooms are spacious and it can give a run for the money to any big star hotel if managed well. Which looks pretty remote with the state of affairs which it is in right now. God save them. Amen !

Room Tip: Avoid This Property !

+ Pros
The hotel itself is nice and the suites we were in were big and spacious.
The food was good.
Overall ambience was nice

- Cons
Service was not good in almost every aspect. We wanted to see if there are any better rooms, the guy at the counter was not interested in not showing us
The kitchen was a bit slow to get your food out
The staff actually did not make an effort to help us enjoy. One night we were the only people around the bonfire. The staff objected against bringing our private drinks (fair) but then refused to move the bonfire closer to our rooms. Eventually the bonfire just burned with nobody sitting
around it
The amenities were not consistent. The television in our 'suites' were like 19 television (duh). also one of the rooms never seem to get hot water.

I think the management should improve the service quality and the hotel could be a very good place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms in the new wing at the back of the hotel. they are new, big and also have big TV...

This is the sort of place you should not make an immediate judgement on; forget the 2 minute rule. The reception was manned by a member of staff who had limited understanding of the english language and was being berrated by an Explore tour group member who was having difficulty in making himself understood. This is India where you always receive a nod to any question you ask so a little patience is required; don't forget you are on holiday!
We were given a lovely room overlooking the swimming pool with a spacious bathroom. The hotel itself is surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens and has a very relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant served some of the most delicious hotel food we had eaten on our 3 week trip and the staff could not have been more helpful or accommodating and very hard working. The hotel was a little dated but it did have a palatial feel due to the amount of space.
We enjoyed an exceptional day at the nearby bird sanctuary with our guide Mr Gupta. We were collected in a tuk-tuk from the hotel and we arrived 10 minutes later to collect our bicycles. We are used to sitting for several hours in East Yorkshire hides awaiting birds to come into view so we couldn't believe our eyes with the variety and volumes of birds to see at the santuary. We will return one day as it was one of our happiest memories of the trip. Our tuk tuk driver collected us and even gave me a driving lesson on our return to the hotel; great fun! We were relaxing on the balcony and looked across to see a stunning kingfisher perched on a pole staring back at us; nope that does not happen in Hull.

But for heavens sake do NOT call this a palace. Even the poorest king would behead the designer of this dump. No heat in the rooms. Feel free to FREEZE in bed. Room temperature is 4 degrees. TV does not work at all. Bed has hair in it- not our hair I must add. Paper thin comforter has stains and has never been washed. Hair Dryer-you guessed it-does not work. This hotel provides the worst possible soap ever manufactured- it does not lather, it is microscopic and one feels dirtier than before the shower. The only plus point here is that the water is hot in the shower, which is useful to thaw on a January morning. Felt bad for the tourists brought here in buses on the way to Agra. They must form such a bad impression of India. Bharatpur is a dump to begin with, with the badly run bird sanctuary the only saving grace. See the birds, skip the city, in any case avoid the Uday Vilas like the plague. Even the memory of my stay gives me the shivers. I beg you, please do not ever, ever, think of staying at Uday vilas. This trauma will live with us for the rest of our lives.

Room Tip: No room is a good room at this hotel. You could get bad or worse. We got the bad one. We shudder to...

we visited bharatpur in December 2012 and stayed at this hotel. our was only an overnight stay. the hotel is nice, beautiful and spacious. the rooms are big and nice. however, basic amenities like tea kit etc were not provided in the room. tea was served on order. The overall approach of hotel management towards its guests was very casual. hotel staff was not paying proper attention to its guests.
the major improvement which the hotel needs is to change its approach towards its guest.

however, infrastructure wise the hotel is beautiful and good. you can stay at this hotel if you have own mode of transport as the hotel is about 400m from bird sanctuary.

the food at the hotel was good, though slightly expensive but anyway it was good. the breakfast served was also very good.
