Beware hotels with Heritage in their publicity! Laxmi Vilas is the older cousin to the newer Laxmi Niwas Palace and shares dining facilities and the swimming pool. Its a bit of a hike from Laxmi Vilas to the dining hall, pleasant enough on a fine warm day, but less so in the rain!

The rooms we had were on the dingy side, but were clean and everything worked. The bed had seen better days, but tired after a day walking in Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary that mattered less than it would had we stayed more than one night.

The staff in the dining room seemed bored by their work and requests for hot, fresh rotis were dealt with at snail's pace. But the bar staff in Laxmi Vilas Palace were charming and efficient: perhaps they should give the dining staff some advice on customer relations! Breakfast was a bit of a shambles, but we got what we wanted in the end! Check-out too was handled with indifference, a pity as that left an impression more negative than the overall experience.

Room Tip: Push hard and don't be afraid to inspect and reject until shown one which comes closest to meeti...

We stayed here for two nights 15th & 16th February 2013. There are now two hotels on this site. The original heritage hotel Laxmi Vilas Palace and a newer building called Laxmi Niwas Palace, both under the same ownership. We had a room in the older building up on the top floor, many flights of stairs and winding corridors. Room was large and had a dressing area and huge bathroom, all had very high ceilings , beds very comfortable but overall I would describe the room as "faded" and a little drab.
This hotel has a very pleasant bar area and open courtyard, fully licensed and drinks and wine at reasonable prices and excellent friendly bar staff.
Unfortunately since the building of the new hotel, the kitchens have been moved across to the new building and no meals are offered in the old building; you have to walk across to the dining room which is vast and seems to cater mainly for lunchtime coach parties en route to other areas, a poor choice buffet meal is the only option. In the evening, this huge area is souless with just a few evening diners. The a la carte food was ok but nothing special. Dining room staff rather offhand in contrast to the bar staff. Breakfast service was a bit chaotic on the two mornings we were there. Be aware that the newer building is quite separate from the original building and the walk over is in the open air. Torrential rain when we were there and no umberellas on offer!
There is a very nice pool area shared between the two hotels with comfortable seating.
There is also a very nice small shop with a good variety of stock at reasonable prices.
Overall, I feel with a little more effort this hotel could be so much better and certainly a mistake has been made by no longer offering dining facilities in the more friendly/intimate surroundings of the original heritage hotel.

Room Tip: There are no lifts and lots of stairs so you may wish to request rooms on lower floors

This should have been a good experience. The hotel is a lovely heritage property. Our room was clean and comfortable. But the service and attention to detail leave much to be desired. A few examples out of many: my sheets were much too small for my bed, and as a result could not be tucked in. I am a restless sleeper, and had to get up twice in the night to put my bed back together so I could sleep. Our wake up call was 15 minutes late. At breakfast , there were no more boiled eggs. My husband asked for some, and they said they would make more. Fine – except that when the eggs were ready, they gave them to other diners – as there were only 6 diners in the dining room at that point, that can’t have been an easy mistake to make!

Of course no hotel is perfect, and if there is a general atmosphere of caring about customers, it is easy to ignore mistakes. That atmosphere wasn’t present at Laxmi Vilas – indeed the clear impression was that staff thought that big and beautiful was enough. It’s not.

One final point – in the ‘welcome’ pack in the room, there was information about laundry, about massages, and a laminated sheet headed ‘rules’, which contained, among other gems, a paragraph written in legalese saying that if we didn’t pay our bills they had the right to seize our luggage. No welcome though. It seemed to sum up the atmosphere of the hotel

I chose this hotel as my base to visit Deeg, Fatehpur Sikri and Agra (Taj Mahal) as day trips. It is a restful alternative to busy Agra. I stayed 3 nights.
I had a real fight with the morning receptionist to get a good room, which I wanted as I was staying 3 nights when most guests only stay one night as a stopover to visit the bird sanctuary. There was a real contrast between the morning staff, and the evening staff who were very friendly.
In the restaurant, the selection was poor and items not available. I ordered a la carte to avoid stale buffet food, but I got cold rice and my choice of chicken was just scooped from the buffet rather than being freshly prepared. Tasteless; grub for tourists. A real let down.
This hotel must learn to differentiate between all inclusive group tours and independent travelers.
They have a fantastic setup and with a little effort and the right attitude, they could make a stay memorable.
The massage service was very good.

Our stay in this heritage palace hotel was very pleasant and enjoyable. The property is very well maintained and looks like almost new. The rooms are well appointed and it was a pleasure to sit out in the courtyard and the lawns enjoying the ambience. One big disappointment was the food, one - the hotel in being in Rajasthan, one would expect some local delicacies on the menu which were missing and the second was the quality of the food which appeared to be rather tasteless. We did not enjoy the breakfast or the dinner which was served. Other than that the sheer experience of staying in a heritage property was great..

Room Tip: The old part is the heritage property where we stayed so one should request for the old wing..

I loved staying here. Lovely property and could walk around the grounds. It is great to walk around. Ayurvedic spa is great. Breakfast was great and many Indian and continental dishes were offered. You also had chefs making omelette and dosas in the, morning.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good

Super heritage hotel. If you want a plastic, air-conditioned, sanatised business hotel, then go somewhere else. If you want to stay in a Maharajah's palace and feel like a guest, then come here. I'd come again without a second thought.
We sat in a fabulous outside patio, with the charming owner and his wife and chatted like old friends. If we 'd had a couple of more hours then I think we may have solved all the world's problems.
The dining room was so luxurious, food great and service too.
Convenient for visiting Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary in Keoladeo National Park, or Fatephur Sikri.
