A three hour drive from Delhi is all it takes to reach the Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary. Once you reach there you are in a truly different world. The park has been well maintained. For novices like me, it was a good course in bird watching. Not only are there hundreds of different kinds of birds, there are also many varieties. For first timers its good to hire a rickshaw as the rickshaw pullers are well trained in identifying birds and give you some useful information on them as well. For pros, a walk or a cycle ride would be good as then you can spend hours watching the birds from various places such as Siberia, China, Gujarat, Kashmir etc., etc. The best time we were told to be there is from Nov to Feb. After Feb the birds start going back to their home lands. Bharatpur is definitely a place you wouldn't want to come just once.

We had a great guide for our 2 1/2 days' visit and he really knew his stuff. Not only were there birds abounding, but also deer, nilgai, jackals and one small python. January not the best time to visit, esp. for seeing snakes. However, we were greatly saddened by the very poor condition of the white horse plying ceaselessly to and fro. We feel that a prestigious, world-renowned wildlife site should ensure that only animals that are properly cared for and have comfortable harness etc.are allowed within their precinct. The standard of rubbish removal was patchy - I saw several old plastic bottles in the lakes.

Please take a bicycle with guide if you really wants to see park, Avoid rickshaw (i say don't take), they run it in soo slow speed (simply wasting time), even the places where there are no birds.

We went on the second half of the day that is12 noon.We got our entry ticket 100 rs for 2 n Scooty entry 20rs. Scooty is allowed for about 2km from till the actually bird sanctuary entry point, from there you can walk, hire cycle or rickshaw. Bargain with rickshaw wala and check if he h as his own binocular. for an entire day tour they charge 70rs per hr,but if you take for shorter time period you will have to bargain for rates. Our guide/ rickshawala was nice he described everything in detail and with enthusiasm. His name was Pritam (i think so). He told us about Dr salim ali and about his research. he also said these birds will fly back in the end of March and they will clear the water area after that as these stagnant water can destroy pink algae and savana grass. We saw cobra. But dint see Python. It comes out around 11 am -2pm out in the sun. He made us see a small owl. I would say this place is strictly for nature lover.Don't come here for picnic, yelling , shouting, eating etc. Walking is very tiring. Rickshawpuller though they charge more but they can actually help u.(remember) choose a rickshaw puller who has his own binocular , bcoz those are awesome and you will get good clarity. Unless you have something like theirs.
