As you will probably have realised, the view from the roof and the location of the hotel about 20m from the walkway to the main entrance to the Golden Temple are the main reasons to stay here. Indeed, they were the main factors for me, and so I was quite willing to overlook other shortcomings. The proximity means it's no problem to drop into the temple any time you like, and I'd highly recommend going at night when it's quieter and has a special charm.
First up, I found the staff to be extremely helpful and friendly. They were more than happy to help with any requests that I had, and helped make up for some of the hotels downsides. For example, there was no towel in the room, but one was brought up speedily with a quick call; there's a spotlight that shines up onto the front of the hotel at night and illuminates the rooms, but they obliged and turned it off when I requested this on both nights I was there.
The view from the roof looks to be the best in town, and I had chaay up there first thing each morning and last thing at night. I plumped for the middle quality room, and I'm happy that I didn't really bother with the temple view rooms as I'm not going to spend much time looking at it from there when you can go to the roof and get a better view. The room itself was decent enough, not exactly in pristine condition, but it did the job and the bed was very comfortable. Bedding was nice and warm too, which is a must in mid-Winter.
Major problems for me would be - paper thin walls combined with a central air-con system which means you can hear everything in adjoining rooms (I think the latter is the major culprit), and the fact that there was no hot water on my first morning.
If you value pure comfort and luxury above the location/view factors, then you may be best off looking elsewhere. However, if proximity to the temple and good views are a big pull for you, give this place serious consideration.
