“a blissful pampering of the mind body and soul”
Reviewed July 26, 2009

I travelled to the holy city of amritsar for a much awaited break for the mind, body and soul.

SVAASA met with all this criterion and what's more they continually managed to delight, surprise and indulge us. SVAASA is run by Mrs. Rama Ranjit Mehra and her sons, Iqbal, Vishal and Abhimanyu Mehra. Mrs Rama Mehra is a alternative medicine practitioner and the wellness spa at the hotel is modelled on those concepts. The spa offers apart from others Ayurveda panchakarma therapies, universal wellness therapies and wellness body reading consultation.

The hotel is a boutique haveli, tucked away in the heart of amritsar, a quiet hush descends on you once inside the premises. We were to our surprise upgraded to the Presidential suite despite our booking for deluxe category rooms. Our suite "KESAR DEVI" was an experience by itself. It had cable TV , world space radio, in suite dvd player as add-ons. The F&B menu at SVAASA, though limited in offerings, outdoes the limitations as far as taste and presentation are concerned.

One can dine in the hotel at the garden restuarnant as well as the Herbs cafe lounge. Patios, terraces and courtyards dotted with rattan chairs welcome you to savour your food in silence.

The therapies at the spa outdo the regular spa haunts with their range and expertise. One must try the Patthar sek-hot stones massage, jadi buti potli massage, and avail of their meridian body scan facilities. The meridian scanning helps an individual get an idea of what changes and corrections are needed by the body in form nutritional supplements and vitamins. All nutritional supplements and recommendations are self tested by Mrs.Mehra and her family and then put for distribution.

Personalised, and warm, attention of guest needs and whims by the Mehra family makes the stay at this retreat, a home away from home, with promises to meet again in hearts as we depart from SVAASA.

A must stay when in Amritsar...... if you would like to rejuvenate your soul and if little patience is your forte!

Svaasa is a haven of calm in the middle of Amritsar. It has a very relaxed feel and the rooms are really pretty. It's good to get a massage and learn a bit about ayurveda when doing so - especially if you're travelling in the north and don't get time to visit the south of India.

We were slightly nervouse due to mixed reviews, but had a very enjoyable two nights and were very comfortable. The rooms we saw were beautifully decorated and the food was delicious. We requested the river fish which is a speciality of Amritsar and this was cooked for us on the second night. The hotel will arrange sightseeing etc. if requested and the Golden Temple was undoubtably worth the journey to see it. We arrived by the early Shatabdi train, so saw the affluent Punjab countryside ' en route' which was also worth doing.

Nothing was too much for the staff at Svaasa Spa. Initially we only planned on staying for a night - but we ended up staying for three. The two brothers who manage/ own this lovely boutique hotel really go out of their way to make you feel welcome (but most importantly; not overly smothered). The girls at the reception desk and the young lady who runs the breakfast room were extremely polite and helpful. The food was superbly balanced (and well priced) and the accommodation was excellent. My fiance and I were so impressed by Aman (the hotels local tour guide) that we decided to book her two days in a row. Aman's knowledge of Amritsar was exceptional and she knows exactly where to shop. We had bepoke suits made (both indian style and english) that were measured, made and delivered within 3hrs! - Well worth hiring her services (she's one of only 3-4 lady guides in the whole of Amritsar!). She took us behind the scenes at the Golden Temple (exploring the kitchens where they prepare 40,000 meals a day!). Amazing! - The spa treatment at the hotel was a great addition too. The Indian Head Massages are brilliant! - Mr Simon C & Ms. Tarjit P

Enjoyed the rooms and the ambience. However, the food was a bit bland, perhaps to accommodate the foreign tourists' tastes. Would definitely visit again.

We stayed at this hotel as part of a wonderful 17 day private tour organised by Mr V P Singh of the Indian based company 'Legends and Palaces '. The service, location, and accommodation were delightful but the restaurant was a disappointment with its lack of choice. That said, we have no reservations in recommending it for it had great ambience.

Allegedly not available to Indian Nationals-maybe I'm wrong ,but that's what our driver told us (and our agent had to supply details of our UK ID's before acceptance of our booking !)& in 3 days stay did not see any Indian Nationals staying there, Had I realised that such a race bar applied I would have been circumspect about going!
Despite the above we found the Hotel a charming place .One criticism was the lack of tourist information -just one small ,out of scale xeroxed sketch map. They seem to expect guests to take the Hotel tour guides & leave it to them - a draw back with that approach is that one of their guides elected not to take guests to one temple ( the Hindu "Cave" ) as she judged it as being "too dangerous"!!
Also the standard trip to the Border sundown ceremony is a 60 Km round trip -we took a Tuk Tuk but older people or anyone in hot months is advised to take an AC Taxi , I would suggest
