This is in reference to the review posted on 27th feb'10 by........which is totally unjust. From the moment this person checked in, she picked at each and everything, including our staff. Yet, we kept quiet and accommodated her every wish, as is our duty to do so. We offered to remove the" offending " rug, change clean sheets to even "more" cleaner ones, have the neat and clean washroom "scrubbed" more....and, stoically remained silent at the lack of slippers n bathrobes.......
Grand hotel, is a heritage, spacious and a quiet property, but essentially a budget hotel, clean and basic We may not have 5 star treatment, and that is why we are priced lower, yet all facilities ( fridge, geysers,wi-fi,a.c's,tv etc) are available in all rooms. We NEVER compromise on basics. We have never lied on our website, yet this person not only questioned our veracity, but passed such disparaging comments, which were personal in nature (as u can make out by what she has said about the owner "busy" travelling around ). No human-being, just for a little sum of money, in the name of hospitality industry, has to compromise on their self-respect.I was also warned that all travel advisories would hear about it. And, the picture of the staircase( note: not the room ) was when the paint-job was on, n this can be checked by anyone. We welcome complaints but not insults.

We viewed this hotel on the Internet and it looked ok, but when we arrived it wasn’t what we expected. We looked at several rooms and the lower room we were shown smelled damp and musty, we looked at the ones on the balcony and they just about looked adequate. As we had been travelling since 5.00 am we didn’t really want to start looking around so we decided to stay. We had planned for three nights and had to pay up front, a big mistake! After we moved in we started to notice how dirty the place was, the toilet was grimy, the walls and the doors hadn’t been cleaned as they had dirty finger marks all over them, the rug was disgusting, thick caked dirt on it, fluff in all the corners and the bed linen had to be changed, which they did straight away. In fact it was so dirty we just didn’t want to unpack our clothes. After a rest we went around Amritsar and viewed another four hotels and decided that we would move on the next day. The following morning we tried to check out, but on requesting our money back for the other two nights we were told that we would have to speak to the manager, as they on reception were unable to deal with this, so we asked them to contact the manager to come and speak to us. After a very long conversation on the phone between reception staff and manager they told us that the manager would come and speak to us in about half an hour, after waiting almost an hour and the manager not showing we told the reception staff that we would return later in the afternoon to speak to her. Later that day we returned, soon after the
Manager arrived, immediately we were told that it was not their policy to refund any money and what was our reason for wanting to leave, we explained that we could not stay any longer in a place that was so dirty at which they offered to clean the rooms but we felt that the years of accumulated dirt could not be cleaned in just a few hours or even days, the manager said that we must be used to five star hotels, at which we told her that wasn’t the case as we had travelled all around south east Asia paying as little as ten dollars a night for basic but clean lodgings, she then said that this was Indian standards and that’s what we should expect, we replied that the previous twelve nights, in different parts of India that we had stayed, had been very satisfactory accommodation. We obviously were not going to achieve anything by speaking further to this person, and the owner wasn’t available (we were told he was busy travelling around the world) so we wrote it down to experience and moved to a much nicer/cleaner hotel, a little more expensive but felt it was justified. We cannot comment on the food at The Grand as we didn’t eat there, (we didn’t want to risk it).

Just a stone throwaway from the famous ’’LAWRENCE ROAD’’ of Amritsar. And You can get the Transportation from here to any place of Amritsar at any time in the day as well as Night. So not to worry on the transportation part. ’’GOLDEN TEMPLE’’ is also Very closer to the Hotel. And the Rooms are well equipped with Air conditioners and bathroom have Hot Water Geysers. They have good spacious lawn for Dining out in the Open. Hotel has good Rstaurant which serves quality food.
Most of the Foreigners stay here who come to visit Amritsar.
Booking is not Mandatory but prior booking of 2 days in Advance is recommended.
Ambience is on the grading of 3*.

Grand is one of the oldest hotels in Amritsar, with its own heritage.
Every time I visit Amritsar, I still prefer to stay in this hotel for a matter of convenience, it’s very near to the railway station, offers me parking space.

Central lawn is really plus point of this hotel.

Rooms, flooring really needs renovation if really wants to catch up with time.

I found The Grand Hotel in Amritsar was to be very clean, definately value for money and a kind of an oasis in a busy town. The food was good the and staff was friendly but we only stayed the one night (in late out fairly early) so could really get a feel for the hotel. What we experienced we were happy enough with so I would recommend this hotel to others.

I am curious to see if this is still one of the Lonely Planet's 'top pick' in their newest edition of their India travel book (recently released). My impression is that perhaps at one time they were deserving of that title but now abuse it by overcharging for their rooms.

Reasons Why I Rated This Hotel Poor:

1) They Overcharge

We shared a car with a nice couple to the Wagah Border Crossing through the hotel. The couple mentioned that they only paid 800 INR a night for their room, while we were paying 1290 (for one person) and 1600 (for a two person room). They said the couples room was 'under construction' but this was not true.

2) They Make You Pay ASAP

They forced us to pay as soon as we checked in (only hotel in India that did this).

3) No Sheets

The rooms came with no sheets, we had to request that they give us some.

Overall Amritsar is pretty horrible for mid range hotels. If you are a hotel owner I suggest you open a hotel there. A friend of mine had to walk out of three hotels before he settled on the MK hotel. I asked if he came to the Grand, when he said no and the Lonely Planet suggested it I thought it would be a good fit...I was wrong.

on a 7-week trip with our 2 daughters (5-6). 2 nights : 1800rs a night, extra bed, ac room, not inclusive of breakfast. although in hot (very hot) season, no need to use the ac, which was a good job since it was very noisy. we had a room downstairs, which we much preferred to the ones upstairs since they give direct access to the lovely garden. our daughters enjoyed playing on the swings. amritsar is noisy and dirty (except for the temple of course) and it was really nice to come back to the hotel at night. hotel is walking distance from the station - 5mn away, no need to take a taxi.
you need to take a rickshaw to go to the temple - about 10-15mn away.
we really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. it looks shabby from the outside but is lovely inside. the service was good as well as the food.
