I would stay here again. The location is a minute walk across the road from the railway station, highly convenient when arriving/leaving with luggage! Rickshaws into town are passing right outside the door for very cheap to the main sites.
My room was the most basic/cheapest double. It had a good tv, hot water, a good size bathroom & good size bed. Room smelt a bit musty.. The rooms don't seem to get much natural light or air circulation. The garden courtyard is lovely & the food excellent!!
Staff were always helpful and friendly.
The tour to the border crossing/mata temple/golden temple at night was a great way to see the sites comfortably for 500INR.
You can conveniently pay by cash or Visa card.
There is also free wifi for guests.
Highly recommended.

Decent and clean, with sizable pleasant courtyard (where meals can be taken) as well as enclosed restaurant (Amritsar can be chilly in the winter). All but the cheapest rooms well insulated from the street noise outside. Unfortunately, in our 2011 visit, fouled up our reservation intended to assure us a room and a hot shower when we arrived very early in the morning (but not the rest of our reservation), though we did get into rooms fairly early that day (and ultimately got hot water). In effect, we were charged for a room we didn’t get. Decided to try them again in 2012 and had no problem. Hotel clearly visible from the northeast entrance to the train station parking/staging area. Easily walkable from there, especially if you use the pedestrian overcrossing over Grand Trunk / Queens Rd. just to the south / your left as you reach the northeast station entrance.

I showed up in Amritsar at 2am off the only train from Pathankot I could find. The staff at Hotel Grand let me in even though they didn't have a room for me, and let me rest in the lobby after a long journey. The next morning they had a very clean and nice room for me, with a hot shower and plenty of space. The green courtyard in the center is a much needed oasis from the craziness that is Amritsar and the business of the wonderful Golden Temple. The food in the cafe located inside the hotel was great. The 500 IR tour of the Indo/pak border ceremony+the golden temple at night was a great deal for anyone looking do go there. Most of all, the owner Sanjay and the rest of the staff were always very friendly and helpful with anything I needed. I'm very glad I stayed here.

The Grand Hotel is sadly not so grand! It is, however, set in a great location - close to the main railway station and within easy reach of the Golden Temple.

The little garden is a welcome haven where you can enjoy your breakfast in a morning or a beer at night.

A renovation programme was under way whilst I was there so the fraying edges may soon be repaired.

The location and price make The Grand a good choice for budget conscious travellers.

This was the only place we stayed that we DIDN'T find on tripadvisor, and it's the only place we were disappointed in. Despite a top review in Rough Guide, Grand Hotel is currently under construction, which always makes even the most legit place feel dodgy, and our room was very spare (which would have been okay) and not very clean (which wasn't okay with me - questionable bed linens, dirty footprints in the bathroom). That said, the hotel offers a great package touring deal that includes the Indo-Pak border ceremony, a Hindu temple, and the Sikh Golden Temple, for 500 Rs per person - AND we loved the garden restaurant setting and thought the food was great. Final thought is that while the proximity to the train station means it's in a very busy part of the city with many people on the streets trying to get your business, the night at the hotel was quite quiet, and being able to walk to and from the train station is very convenient. Oh, and free wi-fi, which worked well in the main lobby. Oh, and plenty of hot water, which we were grateful for. I wish Grand Hotel well in the renovation process!

My husband and I stayed three nights at the Grand Hotel. Our stay was extended when we made some changes in our travel plans and couldn't get the train we needed to Haridwar. Amritsar is not welcoming with the swarms of bicycle rickshaw drivers and others continually trying to get your business. It's not a clean city, one of the most run down I've been in India, however then there's the charm of the amazing, pristine, and spiritually vibrant Golden Temple. There are a few other gems to view such as the beautiful castle-like University, interesting Hindu Temples (such as the one that is shaped like a womb and is dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva), and the almost Ballywood atmosphere of the daily India-Parkinstan border crossing celebration. And, then there's the Grand Hotel that serves Kingfisher Beer in their little garden restaurant. We stayed in one of there best rooms off the Garden. The service was highly attentive and kind. The room was clean (by Indian Standards) and the manager was professional and helpful. The location is about 2 Km from the temple but transport is no problem. The bonus is if you need to catch a train you are in walking distance so very easy. We'd definitely stay again if we return to Amritsar.

Room Tip: The garden view double room seems to be their best. We were booked for a standard but they didn'...

The location is indeed convenient for early or late trains, close to the railway station.

They place itself obviously has seen better days, not so grand anymore. Our room was very spacious, but run down. Cleanliness ok. They charged 200Rps for the wireless although it had been advertised as free on the website.

Given the relatively high price, not the best value for your money. Chose it, if you just need a place close to the railway.
