We stayed at the Grand Hotel a few days ago (visiting from Delhi) on the rec of a friend. Initially I was a bit skeptical because it is literally a two minute walk from the train station and I don't usually associate "good hotel" with "near railway". Man, I was wrong.

The service was superb - everyone was prompt and very friendly. It's right on a decently busy road, but once you entered, it was if that didn't exist. The hotel is a bit old, but they've been top in the city from reading all the thank you letters. So you walk in and down the hall it opens into a cute courtyard with outdoor seating. On the other side is a proper bar.

Currently, the hotel is under renovation, so a whole wing is closed. Our room was upstairs facing the garden. It's super basic, but spotless! There's a fridge, A/C, cable TV. There were no bath amenities other towels and bar soap. Also, it comes with a geyser (on-demand water heater) so 24hr hot water.

We also took their tour that started at 4pm - border crossing, Mata temple and Golden Temple. There was no guide (I prefer that). Talk about value for money though - Rs500.

Food-wise, excellent french fries and chilli chicken. The only thing I would have liked would've been a couple Amritsar dishes on the menu. It's just general continental and North Indian. And the glasses are ice cold for beer.

We only stayed one night and the next day booked a taxi through them to McLeod Ganj. It was cheaper than expected and with a good driver.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: Stay on the first floor, facing courtyard.

This hotel is one of the oldest in Amritsar , it still carries the atmosphere and the aroma of an Old Indian hotel with a garden in the middle.
The rooms were quite nice and spacious , only that it had the humidity and an odour when we entered , but after opening the air-con , it all became okay .
The service was very good , and the staff was well- mannered and readily available
Would definitely stay there again

We have stayed 2 nights in Aug 2011 for tourism.
since this hotel is very close to the railway station it is often complete and reservation may be a good choice expecially if you travel from/to Delhi with Shatabdi Express.
Rooms are well furnished and regularly clean; we have had an A/C one and the system has worked properly.
Restaurant serves good dishes at reasonable price; if one dislikes many other restaurants can be tried in the sourroundings.
Internet connection is available and charged about 30 Rs/hour; hotel can also arrange transportation to the Wagah border for the retirement ceremony.

The Grand Hotel is an old hotel near the train station in Amritsar. It looks a bit shabby in places but the room itself was very nice and spotlessly clean. There didn't seem to be hot water in the room but you could call reception and ask for a bucket of it I believe, which is what the people in the room next to me did. All rooms are on the inside of the hotel so it is quiet and there is a garden, with lawn which is nice to sit around. I had dinner at the hotel every night and the food was good. In fact I had one of the best chicken tikka masalas that Ive ever had there. The hotel has WIFI which is a real bonus in India. It costs two hundred rupees a day but it is worth it in my opinion. My room cost twelve hundred rupees a night which included taxes. There are rickshaws outside the hotel who will take you to the sights including the golden temple for around fifty rupees each way. The hotel also organise a tour which takes in the border ceremony, the mother temple and the golden temple at night for a total of five hundred rupees. The final bonus is that this hotel has a bar! Kingfisher is available on tap for seventy rupees a glass - a schooner for you Australians reading - which was great for me as I hadn't had a beer in three weeks in India.
All of the staff I came into contact with were very professional and friendly and I would definitely stay there again if I was in Amritsar.
