This place is known mostly for the gold which the main temple is built, but when and only when one visits this place, one can experience the spirituality of The Golden Temple. Its not just about the beautiful architecture or the devotion of the worshipers but the thing that touched me mostly was the selflessness that was displayed in the kitchen that feeds thousands of people daily... that was the true wealth of the Golden Temple and I must say the group and myself would not have enjoyed the full benefit of our most informed, patient and pleasant English speaking guide Mr. Ram Sharma or "Anil". Mr Sharma thank you for adding to the success of our triip.

Recently, at the end of December 2013 I was invited to wedding in North India and one day I made a trip from Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab to Amritsar, the holy town of Sikh people.
Amritsar is like all Indian town, crowded with people and some animals, but above all very dirty place.
But, in the middle of mess there is beautiful complex of the Golden Temple.
What is Vatican for Roman Catolic that is the Golden Temple for Sikh-center of religious life.
The Temple itself is situated in the middle of artificial lake and acces to Temple is alowed only without shoes and with covered hair for men.
The whole surface of Temple is done of white marble and the central building is covered with gold which gives special effect in sunset and in sunrise.
Anyway, the Golden Temple is worth of visit even it is not very close to capital of India.

Of course , you are in Amritsar because of Golden Temple, It may a trip just to view an attraction, or a religious trip. Both ways , it's an amazing experience to be at Golden temple.

It's a beautiful complex, very huge and millions of people visit every day.

Some tips
1.Travel light as much as possible, if you are carrying some stuff, deposit just before entering the temple
2.Do visit in evening/night, it looks beautiful. You can see the entire Golden reflection in the pond
3.Do not miss , night dinner at Langar, worth an experience
4.If you have time , do some "Sewa", like pelling vegetables etc, it will give you a satisfaction beyond relaization

The great numbers of ratings on Trip Advisor, which are exceptionally positive, are deserved. The only thing we would like to add is that we went there at night for both our visits. The atmosphere of the Golden Temple in the evening light allowed us to forget about the thick, smoky haze of the city. Access was simple, once you know the path, no guide required. Simply ask a few of the shopkeepers for the direction after being dropped off. We expected huge crowds and extremely long lines, which we heard can be the case on certain special occasions. However, the number of people present seemed small, crowding was not an issue for our mid-week visits. For Westerners like us, you need to purchase, for only a few rupees, an orange scarf at one of the nearby shops if you do not already have a head covering. Leave your shoes at one of the counters designed for keeping them; they will be safe. You can take your camera and shoot freely once you are inside the main complex, but not within the Golden Temple itself, although some India nationals might. We recommend visiting close-by Jallianwala Bagh just before sundown, when the ceremony is held there, and then going onto the Golden Temple.
