“Amazing site”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

What a wonderful place. In spite the cold weather and having to remove my shoes, washing my feet in a Fountain where everyone else does, and not being allowed to wear my socks it is all worth it :) it is a place like no other. According to my travel guide the place has 750k of 24 ct gold place all over the main building.
Amritsar it is a truly chaotic city but the Olden temple is magnificent.

“Amazing Experience”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Moving through the hustle and bustle of Amritsar leading up to this holy place you really have no idea what to expect but after leaving your shoes putting a scarf on your head and washing your feet in water that makes you think twice you are rewarded with a stunningly beautiful gold temple which I was lucky enough to experience late at night and sunrise. After walking around on the marble floors and getting people pointing, staring, taking photos, and asking you to pose for them (blonde is not something seen much here as people have come to this holy place from all over india). It is an amazing experience to just sit on the edge of the water surrounding the temple and take in the beauty of the gold and marble surrounding you. Watching the religious devotion around you really gives you a new respect for the country you are in and its people. It is beautiful to be a part of something that seems bigger than yourself when you are surrounded by it! All in all an amazing experience and not to be missed!

“a national treasure-- and a must see”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Hari Mandir is a peaceful, respectful place--- so beautiful with architecture, the relaxing songs of the Sikh Holy Book, and how people act inside the temple. The beauty of the many buildings and shrines in the temple complex is stunning--- and the temple itself is the most beautiful building i've seen in India. The pietra dura marble with stone inlaly is high quality, and the sides and top of the temple are covered in gold. The inside of the temple is so ornate, and it is really moving to see the priests and faithful in such devotion. It seems a small building from the side of the tank as you walk around the complex, but upclose and climing to the very top, i realized how big it really is. The temple and entire complex are lovingly cared for by many volunteers-- men and women, and the grounds are spotlessly clean. The visit logistics are well planned, with an area for shoes (warning: socks also need to be removed-- so it was very cold walking on the marble floors in Jan! and would be boiling hot in the warm months), another area for bags, another area to wash hands, a foot bath, people posted to remind women to cover their heads, etc. The temple looks different from each angle of the complex--- and also between day and night, so definitely try to visit at least twice to see the difference. Guidebooks say the Golden Temple is now more visited than the Taj Mahal, which is famous and beautiful but not so 'alive' with faith, daily care, and people.

“Impressive beautifully”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

There are many impressive temples but this is the most lavish I have visited.
There is a special peace and decency inside the walls and you sense that all visitors regardless of religious beliefs show great reverence to the Golden Temple.
If you have forgotten your scarf do not worry there are MANY people on the road to the temple and offer the little recognizable orange scarf.
Before you go in, take your shoes off and leave them in a deposit here we didn't experienced no queue.
