We landed up in Amritsar at 6 am in the peak of winter and without a hotel reservation. Queens road (which is located near all the touristy places) has several places and we just tried our luck at Namaskar, without reading any reviews before hand. They showed us two sets of rooms -- one teeny tiny, with just a bed and the bathroom and the other (slightly more expensive) with a table, chair and all that. Some of the walls had peeling paint and that was just about the only "problem" with the room.
We paid around 1900 per night (for two) and we were given very clean rooms with reasonably clean sheets and quilts. The bathrooms were also clean and had hot water through the day (solar heated). The rooms also had TVs with lots of channels (not just the usual free nonsense). The rooms are a bit draughty but they will happily provide you with extra blankets (no extra charge) and a heater (extra charge). The staff were very helpful and polite.
Overall, we had a perfectly good stay that was well worth the price.More
