We had heard a lot about the Wagah border ceremony. Everybody said it was a "must visit" if you are going to Amritsar and a "different experience". But our visit was very disappointing. It's really really croweded with poor, in fact, non-existent crowd management.
We somehow managed to get in and a sea of people then sort of pushed us to the viewing area. Other families who had come with us wisely decided to go back to the bus and wait it out. Unfortunately, as we had got separated quite early, and had no means of communication (mobiles don't work in the border area), we didn't get to know this till after the event. In any case, even if we had wanted to go back, there was no space for us to either inch our way up or come down. And this when we had reached the venue one and half hours in advance!
The ceremony itself, once it started, had a very stagey appearance. For instance, we could see Indian personnel going to the other side of the gate to Pakistan side, possibly to inform them about delay in start of the ceremony as a senior Indian Army official was coming to visit that day so the event started later than usual. After this kind of coordination between the two sides, it was disappointing to see the BSF soldier who was sort of choreographing the event from our side inciting the crowd to hoot each time Pakistani songs could be heard. I sincerely feel that patriotism does not mean putting other countries down. Anyway, it was difficult to feel patriotic when you are watching the entire event standing on tiptoes and throuh the gap between shoulders and heads in front of you.

The only positive thing was that nobody groped us....that itself is surprising if you anytime have the misfortune to be stuck in a crowd in India.

That was magnificent and wonderful experience visiting Wagah Border on Sunday.
It was full of excitement when Indian Army was Marching and people were dancing on patriotic songs.
Everyone was in utter excitement, an unforgettable experience.
