when we visited these caves we hired a sailing boat from the Royal Yacht Club and with a trained boat skipper we sailed for about an hour. With the weather being very humid this was the best way to keep cool.We also took a picnic with us on the sailing boat which passed the time until we got there.Once arrived found to be one of the best trips we have had whilst we stayed in India

The hour to hour and a half boat ride is very relaxing. The caves are well maintained and holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar beautifully carved in stone is an amazing site. Some must dos recommended: Carry a camera with a flash as lighting is very low in the cave. Do not carry food, juices etc,. visibly displayed, as you may be subject to a horde of monkey attack. On arrival in Elephanta, after getting off the boat, even if you have to wait, take the toy train. It will save you a long walk in the sun. Finally, on your return (you may have to pay a little extra), take a larger boat into Mumbai. The topmost deck during return will provide you amazing sights of the city

A half day tour to an amazing site on an island not far from Mumbai. The beauty of this half day sightseeing is the view of the Gateway of India when you leave the city and when return. In itself it is a photo opportunity that worth the trip by itself.

The Elephanta Caves has nothing remotely connected to any elephant and we did not know how the name came about. However the site has several statues of the Hindu religion. The boat ride followed by train ride and finally a climb of short flight of stairs before reaching the cave was part of the excitement. We spent over an hour to see the site with very good explanation from our local guide. Unfortunately, we saw the damages that had been done to the statues as the soldiers had used them as target practice when they were based here.

It was not right time to visit Elelphanta Caves during summer Vacation, thiese caves are 1 hour journey by boat from India Gate to Elephanta Island.

It was very humid and climbing in these summer was very tough, we all sweated like anything.

Caves are worth visiting, but your condition force you to see only first Shiva Caves only. Historically very well known place.

plan your visit during Winter only.
